How To Remove Intake Carbon Build Up Using Fuel Injector Cleaner

After doing some research on the subject, I found that active ingredients in pretty much any Fuel Injector Cleaner Additive will remove intake valve carbon deposits in direct injection engines. I used to use CRC Intake Valve Cleaner for decarbonizing carbon decarbon decarbonizing decarbonization.
These detergents are called PolyEtherAmines or PEA and are found in concentrations of up to 50% in several commercial grade fuel injector cleaner additives
This is the exact same method people use when using seafoam.
You just have to pour it directly into the intake of the engine for it to go directly to the carbon in the intake runners and valves and react to it.

Getting prepared to tackle this job, but have another question. When you pour/spray a cleaner into the throttle body do you let it run at the 2000 RPM for any length of time before cutting it off or just cut it off after finishing pouring in the cleaner?
@BadAssEngineering
@BadAssEngineering 4 года назад
Stan, I cut it off immediately after finishing pouring a bottle

One more question for you since you were so kind to answer my 1st question. So, I take the intake off to expose the throttle bottle and follow your instructions, but after the bottles of Techron and after the car has sat for 1 hr , I will need to bring the car to operating temp b4 I adding the Polaris, so will I need to reinstall the intake to warm the car back up or can I do it with the throttle body exposed? I ask becuz I have a Genesis G80 and the intake is quite involved and a real pain to get off and on.
@BadAssEngineering
@BadAssEngineering 4 года назад
Stan You can do it with any cleaner in any order, I just did it for showing purposes. Just leave the engine rest 1 hour between bottles. You can leave everything exposed, just beware of from rain/dust

@@BadAssEngineering Thanks for your replies, I really appreciate it and your videos. You are different from any other video I have watched as they all pour the stuff in the gas tank like the directions say, but you think outside the box and put it where it needs to go. You da man!

What's the 2nd product you're using to pour in? Or can you just keep using CRC? Planning on doing a carbon cleanup this week while replacing my intake manifold mk6 gti
@BadAssEngineering
@BadAssEngineering 4 года назад
khiev I stopped using CRC because it contains diesel and makes the engine knock. Just use Techron or any other injector cleaner

CRC valve cleaner is still available at Amazon
@BadAssEngineering
@BadAssEngineering 4 года назад
Onbok Yi thanks for the heads up but I live in Mexico. Also, CRC IVC contains diésel in the mix and makes the engine knock a lot. I prefer to use Techron since it has a more concentrated PEA content
@RSO1225
@RSO1225 4 года назад
so this is a dumb question I am sure, but her it goes anyway. U have used the Polaris cleaner for a year and all seems good, but I can't find any info that says it is okay to use on passenger cars and trucks as it seems to only be recommended for recreational sports vehicles. Did you find any documentation or call Polaris to verify it was okay for passenger vehicles?
@BadAssEngineering
@BadAssEngineering 4 года назад
Stan There are not dumb questions, dumb is not to ask. All gasoline engines are exactly the same. Polaris ProStar engines don't use different materials or anything, they even use the same Bosch computers, injectors and Throttle bodies used in cars. Any good Gasoline additive will work on any gasoline engine!

@RSO1225

As usual for me, I get the hard stuff and the easy stuff kicks my ass! So, I get off the intake to expose the throttle body which was not that easy, then I go to pour the Techron like you did and what a mess! The throttle body seemed to be tilted down just a hair and the butterfly valve was closed. I had a helluva time trying to pour in the stuff! It ran out the throttle body and it ran down the bottle and all over the engine, smoking like crazy! It went everywhere except in the throttle body I think. I tried a funnel but that did not work either. I stopped at one bottle and did not use the Polaris, I had had enough! Why does something so simple have to be so damn difficult.

You can also try to do this via a vacuum line going into the intake, the cleaner wont spread as evenly in the manifold, but it would be better than nothing

You could put the front end up on ramps and let most of the air out of the back tires.

How do you know its working? Chrisfix put a before and after shots to check for the state of the carbon buildup on the combustion chamber and actually none was very effective. As for what you said, My car is 9 years old and still gives same MPG, so Im not sure they work at all, after seeing Chrisfix's videos
@BadAssEngineering

Depends if your vehicle is direct or port injected, what im going for is the carbon building in the intake ports and valves, not so much for the chamber or piston. GDI engines have problems with carbon in the intake.

U use a fuel addictive to clean up carbon build up, where does it go burns thru exhaust, oil pan?
@BadAssEngineering
@BadAssEngineering 5 лет назад
jay it dissolves the carbon, burns in the combustion chamber and goes out the exhaust

why not through the gas tank?
@BadAssEngineering

Because its direct injection and the fuel never goes through where the build up is. thats the whole point, putting cleaner where it otherwise cant reach

Very, my truck is 3 years old and still gives the same MPGs as it was when new. If you want better results, find Techron Marine, it has more percentage of PEAs. I will be removing my manifold in a couple of months to see how my intake runners and valves are.

Absolutely DO NOT use CRC intake valve cleaner on any GDI vehicle. Especially on Ford EcoBoost or VW GDI engines. Ford actually has posted a bulletin against chemical valve cleaning. Manual cleaning is the only way to go. CRC has had several cases of having to much carbon break off and causing valve and piston damage. And they dont take responsibility for their defective products. I may include that I'm a 20 year certified tech as well. I stay clear of CRC.
