In this video, I show how to remove the welch plug that is sometimes located right above the fuel screw on some street motorcycles. You need to remove these when cleaning carbs.

A piece of mechanics wire works great for fishing out the spring, washer and o ring also. I just did this on my V65 Sabre after drilling the plugs out. All my screws were about 2.75 out and 3.25 fattened it up a smidge and made the idle better.

I do V4 Keihin carbs all the time. I use a deck screw to fish out those parts. Screw it in by hand til you feel it bite and pull it out. fwiw, those are EPA caps/plugs. They were installed by the factory to comply with USA EPA rules but they also keep moisture out and a brass mixture screw in a zinc carb body will corrode together if you do not recap the bodies. Welch plugs are a flat washer minus the hole and are shaped like a contact lens. They are placed in machining holes and tapped in with a hammer/punch which expands them and seals off that hole. Machining hole was made at the factory for access to a machine tool to drill a passage that can not be simply cast in during manufacture. All carbs have them and the Honda V4 has at least 3 Welch plugs per body and a couple other machining holes that are capped off with a small ball bearing and the metal swaged over to seal the bearing in place.

I need some expert advice from someone with actual experience with Kawasaki carbs from a ZG1200 Voyager Xll. Mine is a 1993. Back a few years when my fuel pump went out and needed R&R, I took the opportunity to remove my carbs also because my bike would only run with my choke half on. Everyone told me it was due to my "pilot" jets being clogged. Well, I disassembled my carbs to dunk them in carb cleaner. All clean, but I was told my carbs had more than just my two visible jets, the pilot jet being hidden and needs drilling out to get to it. I've been afraid to drill any holes in my expensive carbs. Are my pilot jets behind these welch plugs too? Please call me if you have knowledge of this. 9/16/2019. Seven oh one 746 five six 50 North Dakota. Michael.

Pilot jets are removed with a screwdriver after the float bowl is removed.

+Alex Ramos Alex, I'm not too familiar with the EFI models. If you get a hold of the service manual, it should want you through any repairs you may need, as well as the special tools? Check out tradebit for cheap manuals.

They're to stop the brass pilot screw from seizing up.
@HTMR
@HTMR 8 лет назад
+Luke J Maybe, I think it's a way to prevent people messing with EPA/emmisions "settings". I find all kinds of tamper proof things on mixtures screws and typically remove them. I have never seen a seized fuel screw.

+MatthewMCRepair You are correct. They are anti-tamper plugs. Nothing else. Another anti-tamper method is "winged" adjustment screws with limited adjustment. Sidecutters remove the wings nicely.
@HTMR
@HTMR 8 лет назад
+Ob Fuscated Yes, on those winged versions, I apply some heat and pull them off. Or sand them down. I'll try some sidecutters next time.
