HOW TO REMOVE PAINT RASH FROM MODEL CARS 

I'm a collector and we did an extensive study on this as little to no real data is available on this matter. For the study we used a lot of models of various makers and this is our final findings. Paint rash/micro bubling is the effect of paint oxcidation and the main reasons are: oxygen, UV light and heat. These three factors combined with time is the result. Worth noting that various paints of different makers react differently and even the colour play part. Red, black(dark colours) and even white rash more easily. Silver tend to be very resistant. Kyosho and Hotwheels & Elite models biggest culprits and resin models don't show rash. Cheaper models like Maisto and Bburago less likely to rash. AutoArt the least likely metal body models to show rash.

Great tutorial mate. I've been collecting die cast models since more than twenty years and I've seen many ways of how paint rash invades models and I have to say that sometimes paint rash is a matter of paint but some other times is a matter of metal and it's impossible to get rid of that defect because that rash is not from the paint it comes from metal and if you try to fix it with sand paper and polish compounds metal will come up and the only way to fix it is to strip paint and repaint the part. That's what happened in this case with those white silver dots that have came up after sanding.

I was evaluating with a friend that every brand has a type painting on its own. pay attention when you happen to perform this intervention on the ferrari kyosho models, as the paint has a much finer thickness than the hot wheels and you would immediately get to the bottom, which will have to be repainted. This may be a major problem for those haven’t experience in disassembly and painting

I have used wet 2000 grit then machine polished with Sonax Cutmax (cutting pad) and Sonax Perfect finish (finish pad) and looks brand new, no sign of paint rash or no scratches. Looks awesome

I have read that the old budget models from Burago are cheap toys and can't compete with the higher end models made by companies such as Kyosho or Hot Wheels yet the Ferrari F40 models and Porsche 911 models i own by the original Burago don't suffer from paint rash or diecast corrosion and those original F40 models are close to being 30yrs old, when compared to Kyosho, almost every F40 model has paint rash, seems to me that the Italian made Burago's are of higher quality diecast metal and better made.

My model cars are displayed inside airtight cabinets and even so, some experience this cancer and some do not (I have Maistos perfect and a Kyosho 250GTO with this problem) Thx for the video!

Great job thanks. But i tried this on the front hood of my car. Used it for the half of it but when i finished it. I still see all the scratches because of the sanding and also didnt get that old shiny gloss look. Where i did it wrong?

Just got a 1979 black Trans Am still new in the box after 20 years and has some paint rash but can mainly just notice it in bright light. i was wondering if it will get worse quickly or stay the same for a long period of time.

Thanks Rob your technique really helped me alot! May i ask you how to remove little scratches or swirl on the surface?? Could i use meguiars or turtlewax?

But since it comes from UNDER the paint, I think that it would eventually come back again with time, cuz the source is not gone. I think that the only real way of getting rid of it is removing the original paint completely until you see the bare metal, then prime it and paint it with an airbrush after you've mixed your color to perfection. After that you must add a nice coat of clearcoat and voilà!

Hi Rob, my model, a Ford Mustang Super Stallion, has paint cracks in the white part on the right front fender, this can be solved by sanding with wet sandpaper (3000) and polishing afterwards.

Rob Love your videos!! Will you ever be customizing your Top Speed Pagani Zonda? I am interested in getting one and removing the wheels to try and paint them a more correct color. Just curious how difficult it would be to remove the wheels.

Another great video, Rob. One thing I don’t quite get is when you sand the panel, why does the clear not need to be reapplied? How do you go straight to polishing the body unless there is still clear, but for Hot Wheels especially, I know they don’t use much clear from the factory in the way you use 3-4 coats for your own custom models. So, wouldn’t the clear have been sanded right through, or was there some left? Also, you mentioned you’re not being thorough for sake of keeping the video brief, yet still the finish came out like new. Had you been more thorough and spent additional time, could you have yielded a better result with more shine and depth, or is the shine capped after certain amount of polishing? Could you also achieve more luster by lightly using a Dremel with buffing wheel?

Rob, have you tried using micro-mesh cloths to remove paint rash? It is less extreme that actual sanding paper.

My model has the same rashes but would this method work on a metallic silver color? Thanks!

I’m gonna try this out on my models but I’m afraid it might take the paint off. Assuming that the same model faces bubbling again, will the paint eventually come off after repeated sanding?

But how to deal with paint scratches in models? I have few ones with minor but noticeable scratches on the body paint and I would like to remove them. My models are mixture of composites, diecast, and resin. PS: Very useful tutorial! I'm going to try this on my F430.

How to avoid paint rash? Keep your models in dry and warm room, without exposure of sunlight! Big No-No is very humid and cold rooms!

Hello. But why rash appears?

It would be better if you use, 2000 grits, 3000 grits, and 6000 grits to sand the paint rash, otherwise it will easily left scratches easily.

Hotwheels: 1/64 scale paint finish lasts 30 years without a scratch.....1/18 scale paint finish, you'll be lucky to get 5 years!

Diecast is far more better to look at, to have, to buy, to keep, to display, to everything than plastic model kit!

I quit buying Tamiya's plastic model kit once I realize Diecast is far more better!
