Thanks Brian... My brakes were seized and I used this method. FYI. The pins are aluminum on mine, so I just worked a chisel under the head and two taps with a hammer latter the head popped off.

I just removed both my rear brake drums for the first time ever! My secret. I used my $200 rubber sledge hammer from "Mac's Hardware." It is a 12 lb. Deadblow hammer that is 36" long. The drum had rust welded itself to the shaft that centers your wheel on the hub. 5 good whacks all over and it came right off!

You can try and pry them off with a screwdriver. But if it does not work then this will definitely get them off . This is a last ditch effort.

Then on putting everything back either the lip needs to be ground off or a new drum put on.

Yep, no other method than retracting the pads would work if they're stuck behind a lip. Probably a good 90 degree nail puller would do the job. Is there a way to get an angled tool behind the back plate to pull the pads down without pulling the pins?
