As long as it's your mixer you can bash it as it will leave tell takes marks, another one is to start a mini wood fire in it and the metal expands and the mortar doesn't so it loosens it (as long as it's not a two part drum with a gasket seal), but as stated above its best to clean it, less bovver!?!

In my younger days I worked in concrete testing laboratories. You’re bang on with pre-wetting bricks to allow proper curing of the cement mix. It’s actually a chemical reaction and omits a bit heat during the bonding process. To dry out too quickly this effects the chemical reaction thus you would end up with a more weaker and crumbly bond… You’re doing good… I’m amazed at the challenge you taken on… inspirational to us all.

@thomasherrin6798
@thomasherrin6798 Год назад
Ladders is O.K. for access, and he has a hoist for lifting, that's how a lot of building sites start off, a temporary stairs would most probably have to be from scaffold and that may cost a pretty penny and only suitable for that area for now, until a more substantial part of the first floor is built up its of little use!?!
@Tea-nOpals

@richkilmer7616

When adding the lime beneath the bricks vorm a peek in the middle to minimize squeeze out and add lime/mortar to the side that is goin next to a previously laid brick (also with a peak in the middle ) this will safe you alot of time in the long run Edit: it will also reduce the time you have to spend cleaning mortar from the bricks and create a stronger bind with less air bubbles

I lived in a far-away-land for many years. Each weekend (Friday) labourers would descend on nearby plots, work like crazy from dawn to dusk, and last thing would run their mixer for half an hour just turning old blocks, stones, and water. It ended up cleaner than it was when it arrived. Then it went off back to where we assumed it had come from. Cleaning up is always the worse part of any job. Many people do not know that 'drying out' is not how lime mortar or concrete sets, it is a chemical process that only happens quite slowly within a damp mix, drying kills the process and produces a weak, useless bond.

Thanks for the explanation of why you weren’t buttering the bricks. I was wondering. … When you were hammering those boards between two old bricks walls, I was fearing the worst. ... And yes, a helmet (and gloves).

A little hint from a pro-bricklayer, give the mixture more time to react, so mix it a little longer. You will see, that it will be more liquid. Another tip is put a little lime into the mixture so it will be more supple and the adhesiveness is better but take care of the water. If you took the lime into the mixture. I hope i could help you.

You need water on site. Maybe consider one of those big white tanks in a metal frame, a long garden hose and a pump. Then you can take better care of your tools and spray your walls a bit as you go... surely they have water delivery tankers in France to refill for you? Save you a ton of time and work not having to haul those big bottles of water up and down the ladders.

Dan, I have to say this, tip your mix into a wheelbarrow and wheel into the chateau then transfer to the bucket. Put water in the mixer and clean ready for the next mix. You make it look so damn hard mate.

It's nice that Calvin is coming to help once again so I'd say, "Yeah don't kill him". 🤣 Everything is looking good so far. Oh and 3 cheers for thinking health and safety! He does that. I've watched him do it on other sections, and he even talked about it in one video. It think we haven't seen it here since it's only the first two layers of this section, and he's focused on getting them level and straight.

He doesn't listen. He is absolute advice resistant. He clearly has no idea what an english bond is and he even said he has seen how the original wall was build with headers and binders but he just ignores it because he thinks he knows better. He clearly doesn't and he is building absolute bullshit and it's a shame he is doing such a botched job to this historic building.

I’m in africa - and sand can sometimes be coarser (as not every builders yard keeps the fine plaster sand or finer sifted river sand). I’ve added a splash of bonding/key latex liquid - and it definitely makes it a bit smoother buttery mix.
