A snapped chain shouldn't mean the end of your ride. This video has three ways to fix your chain and get back on the trails.
Click here to subscribe to GMBN: gmbn.eu/Subscribe
It's good to be prepared. Make sure that you can fix your chain on a ride by taking a multitool with a chain tool and either a powerlink or a Shimano chain joining pin with you on every ride. There is another way to hack your chain and get home, but the first two methods are far easier.
What maintenance tips would you like to see next on GMBN? Comment below and let us know!

always bring a extra couple of links with you, in your saddle bag or tape it to your seat post then you can have use of all your gears if your chain goes

I always have two KMC quick link on me they saved me (and my riding buddies) couple of times. Of course I learned it on the hard way when I had to walk back home with a broken chain... Just a reminder if you need to shorten your chain with FS bikes you will have even less usable gears because of the chain growth when the rear compresses.

this happened to me just now on the way home thankfully amongst the tools i pack in every ride are a spare pair of power links so no issues there whew!

I bring a little bit of wire (coat hanger) to keep the chain together while putting it back together. Super annoying when it keeps popping
@massspike
@massspike 9 лет назад
Robbie Keane I was wondering how Si was going to deal with this but I think he was using his knee to push in the RD (and create slack). If he wasn't, it is a good trick and how did he do it?
@IbaLabs
@IbaLabs 9 лет назад
Mike Williams you can pop the chain off on the front chainrings and let it rest around the BB. That creates enough slack to easily reconnect the chain.
@massspike
@massspike 9 лет назад
Calvin Iba That works on my road bike and older MTB's but as I found out this winter it didn't work on my fatbike (with a new SRAM X5 RD). There was still too much tension and at -20C I didn't have a lot of time to mess around (so I now carry a bent length of old spoke). Given the small big ring and the move to stronger springs to keep the chain on there isn't a lot of extra chain left. I assumed a clutch type RD would be even worse.
@IbaLabs
@IbaLabs 9 лет назад
Some sram derailleurs have a cage lock that allows you to lock the cage in a position that slackens the chain.

Hey GMBN, I own a Cannondale lefty carbon rush. I have one problem with my bike's chain. It keeps snapping every time I make a hop or down multiple stairs! I am fed up with buying new chains and I need an explanation of what causes my chain to snap every time! I am looking forward to your reply. Thanks team!

Nice guide. The chain is threaded wrong on the rear derailleur. It should go behind the notch.

Si you forgot to point out a very common mistake. When threading the chain through the rear mech. Make sure that the chain is threaded through the the jockey wheels correctly and not touching the piece of metal that joins the cage plate together. It saves time to check twice and relink the chain once, rather then having to break the chain again because you made a mistake.

Most definetly, or your mates may call you an "Absolute Knob" .....take it from me, one simple, easy to make mistake can haunt you for ....ohhhh, nearly 20 years.... still that's all part of riding, mates taking the pee out of each other and laughing on the stacks ....that's what makes it such fun!! To be fair, never made the same mistake twice!!

I know you guys are mainly focussing on riding skills and maintanance in your how to 's. But did you ever consider doing some on trail buildin?. Now it's nice and good if you have a trail to ride on but it's also very important to build them in the first place. So i'd appreciate if you guys maby consider giving us a little bit of content on this issue as well.

Question: 1. When rejoining chain (standard chain link) is it safe? because is the most common option I know and you just can't buy Shimano PINS easily especially in my area. 2. Can you install two or more POWER LINK (Missing Link)? BTW very practical tips simply the best especially on actual situations.
@gmbn
@gmbn 8 лет назад
+Aanonymous88 You can put more than one power link in. If you've snapped it I would recommend replacing the chain but as a short term solution extra pins or quick links can be a solution.

Global Mountain Bike Network I dunno how it is for other company's but for Shimano newer XT and XTR stuff you really need to check the rotation direction. Sure it will do the job if you get it wrong on the bike but not so good (gears can jump and make a lot of noise) and even if you chain is full functional it can damage all your chain rings.

Random question: is that an 11 or 10 speed chain you are fixing? Reason for asking is that I bought one of those multi-tools recently, but didn't realise it is only compatible with 8/9/10 speed chains while I run an 11 speed chain - wondering if it will still work?

Did you ever find out if the multitool worked with 11-speed? Wondering about buying the Crankbrothers m17 or m19 myself.

Remember that some chains have specific orientation requirements, e.g. Shimano chains must be mounted with groupset description / logo facing away from the bike!
@massspike
@massspike 9 лет назад
RCalundann SRAM Quicklocks (for 10 and 11 speed chains) also are uni-directional -- they have a small arrow on them indicating the orientation. (Not sure about Quicklinks)

If you just put back that pin, will it be strong enough, or you should buy a new chain as soon as it is convenient? I have to make some similar repair on my chain. Only difference that I have some spare links I can put in place of the damaged one.
@gmbn
@gmbn 8 лет назад
+RelakSHUN It depends how old the chain is and how well you repair it. Personally if the chain is a bit old and it breaks I will just replace it because I dont trust it. If it is quite new I will carefully repair it. Neil
@RelakS__

Thank you. The problem was actually that the chain were caught by the front cogs and bent, so I expect after replacing the wrong links it could serve for a couple of hundreds kilometres.

@IbaLabs

Mike Williams use the end of the chain tool where the pin pops out when you're pushing it out. stick the centering pin in there and break it off.

(my life must suck)

You forgot how to solve a stiff link, simply hold the links either side of the stiff one with your hand and wiggle them back and forth inward and outward in different directions until it moves freely :)

@danfuerthgillis4483

That is a complete lie about the pin not able to be put back. All you need is a Small thin head Plier that can lock on the back ( dentists, orthodontics ) and hold the pin on one edge so that one long edge is seen. Bend the chain link before joining them so it holds tight on the chain split tool now hold the pin inside the inner part of the chain split tool and start moving the tool till the head meets the pin, slowly push it in until you feel pressure then stop immediately. Now unlock the plier slowly and slowly push the pin in with the tool. It could take a few tries to line up the pin properly but it works great. 5 MINUTES tops !!! . Basically you are holding the long side of the pin up to the hole untill there's enough force from the chain split tool head to hold it straight .

Need more than a chain tool i am afraid . I just spent 2 hours trying to get the pin into the hole in link .Of course here he has a special Shimano pin .Pity he did not mention this at the beginning .. He just shoved it in .Took me 2 hours to do this . This is the MOST DIFFICULT part of the process and it is GLOSSED over Here .How about showing us how to fit the pin WITHOUT the Shimano pin . Not STRAIGHT FORWARD I am Afraid . All weel and good if you have idealised tools . What if you dont't?
