What stitch length and setting on machine? What thread for hand stitching? I’ve sewn for 50 years, yet need to watch others to mend granddaughters jeans, in a popular look.

I'm having the same trouble. I'm hoping turning them inside out? Maybe using iron on interfacing in a picture frame shape, and then hand sewing would be necessary around the very edges of the denim fray if you didn't want your string to get longer. I've watched a few others, maybe stretch material would be good if you have elastic in your jeans? I'm trying to figure this out too so none of this might even work, I just thought I'd throw out a few ideas.

Use hot glue gun instead. Once done iron it and glue will spread more evenly and stuck for a longer period.

ROTHSSHVILI swear does it work well even if u put it in the washer?

I suppose the guys in the sawing store would prefer iron on patches due to the frequency of saws cutting into their garments. Now the folks in the sewing store may prefer sewn on patches!

Will the patch stay on if you dry them

I have wasted money on those iron-on patches. First, they are stiff and not very flexible. Second, they are tough but the jeans wind up ripping again at the edge of the patch. I would over-lap a new patch and it would eventually rip at the edge of that patch. I had one pair of jeans that I had more money into patching than the jeans were worth.

MicrowaveWalrus the thread (not string) she removed is called a basting stitch. It’s basically done to hold the material in place, it’s not permanent stitching. A basting stitch is often used in an instance where pins may not be possible/practical or with material that’s slippery and could move when sewing on a machine.

That's because she didn't explain WTF she just did in FF motion. That sucked as far as tutorials go.

Jeff S I guess it’s a good thing there are countless tutorials on how to patch a hold in your jeans. Not every tutorial is appropriate for every skill level. If you’re struggling either ask questions or look for a different video more suited to your level. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Go to fabric store and get scrap clith. Or my favorite is to go to a used clothing store and buy a cheap shirt and cut a piece of cloth from it.

Honestly, it's not as tough as it looks. I've only been sewing for the last month or two, and I've been having fun hand repairing my jeans. I don't even have a sewing machine; I just looked for tutorials here on youtube, learned a few stitches, and I patch my jeans just like this. Learn a little embroidery, and you can even add cool details and designs to your stuff, if you're into that. Example: I'm about to add some moons and plants to a pair of pants I've fixed exactly like this, but with fabric that has moons and stars and planets on it. You stop being so worried once you think, "Hm. This pair of jeans won't last forever. They already need repaired. At best, my repair may buy me some time, but these jeans will still eventually wear out beyond what I can fix. If I mess something up, I can take out my stitches, or I can give up and be done with these jeans." With something like this, you're really not going to ruin your stuff, because the stitches you put down can always be torn out. Scissors work if you don't have a seam ripper. It's also a very handy life skill to have. If you master this, you can extend the life of your stuff, and it's just super useful for anyone to know how to do. You can apply it to other stuff if it pops up, like a tear in curtains or even furniture. I swear, learning how to reattach a popped button makes you feel like you have a superpower, because our society these days encourages you to buy cheaply made stuff made to fall apart so you buy more. Repairing stuff is going against that idea, and it's a good thing.
