Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva helps diagnose a problem with composite decking coming loose.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse
Tom explains to Kevin the proper size screw to use when installing composite decking.
Time: 2 hours
Cost: $20
Skill Level: Beginner
Shopping List:
Long composite deck screws
Steps:
1. When fastening deck boards to structure, remember that the structure will dry out and shrink in time. Because of this, Tom recommends using screws that are 2.5x longer than the material being fastened.
2. If deck boards are popping for this reason, replacing shorter screws with longer screws should solve the problem.
Resources:
Various size deck screws can be found at the local home center or local lumberyard.

Tommy tip: Two and a half times the thickness of the material that you're going to fasten should be your screw length

Yeah there is, it was made up by the producer of This Old House when it first started with Bob Vila, way back when, and This Old House uses it exclusively.

In Germany there is a master carpenter but it requires 6 years of education. Three to become a carpenter and three more to become a master. But before you can become a master you have to work between one and five years as a carpenter.

I think Tommy and Norm would qualify right away. Both have been to Germany and worked with Master Carpenters over there.

I don't want to dispute that but in germany you leran a lot more than just the craft like economic, business management, basics of education, health and safety and more.

The screw also could be lifting because the boards underneath the deck are rotting

I'm a contractor and I have had problems like this due to contracting and expanding of composite decking. It's shearing off the screws.

When do you use nails over screws?

Use longer, dual thread pitch screws. The dual thread pitch pulls the board down at a faster rate than it screws into the joist below. These are also used for squeaking floor boards in the house.
@alchemista2
@alchemista2 2 года назад
I noticed those dual thread pitch screws end up leaving a smooth hole when replacing them. When I removed my decking screws and refastened, there isn't as much or enough "grip" on the composite material for the board. A hard tug will let the board slide up the screw if that makes sense? So when putting in new screws back through the boards, is there some way to fill in material beforehand that would restore the thread grip for the new screw?

macc boogie take a big wood bolt and a matching socket that fits into a drill, aim it and your heart (look up location on Google images), just don’t think and punch it right in there while holding in the button of the drill. This should work.

Would this method work for boards that’s been lifted for years? Also, are there certain weather conditions better for installing those new screws?

The problem I have is ice getting under the board, expanding and then ripping off the screw head.

You used 3.5 in fine thread screws. Never used fine thread for wood.

@loveislife77 4 года назад
@@desarioe I mention this because I had a guy put in some boards that later squeaked and thinking on it afterwards I remembered him asking me to get some 3.5in fine thread screws. I didn't think much of until later on when the boards started to squeak wondering what could have gone wrong and also learning that fine thread screws are used generally for metal. I don't know... maybe I'm wrong, if you get a good explanation from a carpenter please let me know. Hope you find a solution soon

Screw length 2.5x thickness of the decking material? So...for 2x6 cedar we should be using screw 3-3/4” long? Seams excessive. Maybe he’s only talking about composites?

Too long a screw has similar problems when the wood shrinks. Difference is loose boards.
@mr.pleaseparty7780
@mr.pleaseparty7780 6 лет назад
"What is the correct length?" That is the question
@gmrrnracr
@gmrrnracr 6 лет назад
lemmy smash He already said it! 2.5 x thickness of the material to be fastened. So assuming that board was a 2x4 that would be a 4 inch screw. The thickness of a 2x4 is NOT actually 2 inches, its 1 and 3/4. So 1 and 3/4 multiplied by 2.5= 4.375! So a 4 inch or 4.5 inch screw would be called for IN THIS SCENARIO!
