Wonderful video, exactly what I needed! Folks, if you ever have trouble threading the end of a synthetic pull rope, you can also do something like this before trying to thread: Unbend a metal paper paper clip (or scrap of small solid bare wire about that size), heat up well one end with a flame (holding with pliers is a good idea), then jam the heated end straight (i.e. parallel to the cord) into the center of the end of the pullcord, a half inch deep or so. Once cool, the paperclip wire "leader" should be melted to the cord and can be routed as needed into the pulley, grabbed with pliers, etc. Once the pullcord is in the desired position, just clip off enough of the cord to discard the paperclip wire, then proceed with tying the knot, etc.

I was able to feed my rope through without drilling a hole and guiding it through with a slim tool...so I guess I did a combination of 1 and 2. I was almost ready to buy a part for $30 and wait 2 weeks. Feels much better to fix something that buy something new...and yes my engine started. Couldn't have done this without you. Thanks again.

Thanks for the video. I feel for those who do not have the mechanical ability to do repair like this. We should have "the right to repair" on everything. I just had to trash a Homelite chainsaw because a plastic gear was no longer available. Tecumseh on the other hand wants you to buy a new recoil assembly instead of just a cord.

I have the same snowblower, and a downloaded engine manual. It didn't explain all the notches, and how many turns to wind it, so your video was a good help. The hole in my pulley has a nice boss on the inside where a screw goes through the rope to help secure it. I wondered if it weakens the rope, but I just replaced mine after 40 (?) years so maybe it isn't so bad. That was a ten minute job, but it took an hour and a half. The rope I got was super strong (kevlar?), couldn't cut it with dikes and had to use a brand new razor blade. Then it fuzzed up on the end and no way was it going in that hole. I drilled a hole in the outside steel housing in line with the hole so I could get a jeweler screwdriver in there to push it in. Also had to cut the outside sheath and hot glue the strands of the inner rope so it would stay together as I fished it into the hole. Hour and a half. The other notch still mystifies me. It's too small for #5 rope. I spent the evening surfing through real estate in South Carolina.

Thank you for stopping by. I am glad this video was of help. Starter pull cords are typically made of nylon fiber which you can burn & carefully press the ends to a tip so you can thread through a hole. Years back my plan was to head to SC but situation changed. So still scraping ice of my windshield and oh yes still pushing that snow blower LOL Stay well, Joe Z

@@JOEZEP54 Thanks for the reply and tip. The 3 feet was more than enough to get it to start. I ended up doing it easier way (at least for me) than making a hole and trying to wind the string up manually. I turned the spring 3 or 4 rotations then put a screw driver in it so it wouldnt move. (I imagine a 5 foot string would take 5ish turns) I strung the string through the holes, put the handle on, took the screw driver out and it wound itself up perfectly to the handle. Replaced the oil, and greesed up some other rusty squeeky parts now this thing runs like a champ. GL out there!

If you are headed to a parts counter to purchase pullcord, just take some of the old with you. To measure in a pinch, if you have enough old cord, loop it or lay it on a flat surface side-by-side, to make five layers wide. Have someone hold it bunched tight while you measure across the 5 strands. Now, divide your measurement by 5 and you have the approximate cord diameter.
