I snagged one from a 4 runner at pick n pull recently and had a feeling it would swap into my 95 Tacoma pretty easily, glad to see it goes smoothly! Thanks for the video.
I hadn't thought of doing this till I saw this video. I just found one of these in a junkyard on a '95 4Runner. but the one I found doesn't have the switch in the middle to change it to the door mode. That would be pretty cool, but I'm happy with mine. My '92 Pickup didn't even have an existing light there, just a mirror. So no existing wiring to make it easy (of course). I had to tap into the dome light wiring, and run a wire through the head lining up to the mirror, and cut holes to get the map lights in there. I also took a light and switch and wired and installed a light in my glove box so it turns off when it's closed. I took a back light for the 12V socket and a light for the ash tray (change tray) and wired them up. I did a lot more than that, and plan to do more soon. So this video spawned several retro-fitting ideas for me. They're small mods, but I love the results. Maybe I should think about making some videos. . . anyway thanks. Cheers.
Thanks for uploading this video. I have a 94 4runner one of the map lights was burnt out didn't know how to get to the bulbs. I was able to after watching this video. I replaced old bulbs with LED lights and boy in the daytime my map lights look like those tactical flashlights.😂 Thanks again for your help. 😊👍🏾
@@GarageBuiltHondas Sure is now I'm ready to change that dome light it looks off and dark. When I change that one its going to look like the sun's out in my truck in the dark. 😂😂
@@GarageBuiltHondas Excellent! Thank you. I have a '90 SR5 pickup and the lights are very dim and yellowish. Now that I know how to pop open the light without breaking it I am looking forward to replacing them with LEDs. What is the size of the festoon LEDs? Thanks.
I bought this truck for my husband and I got it for a good price but I did not think this gentleman change the hood when I finally said ask him to get the pink slip you said he did he did a transformation because you couldn't find certain parts so he made his own thank you for your help sorry for the late message
Garage Built Hondas just got that taken care of! Initially I took the screws out, and the assembly would not budge. This time I just took a flat head and pried it out a bit. Popped right out. Also thank you for letting me know how to pop off the cover for the individual front seat dome lights. Came stock in my 4Runner. Been trying to replace the bulbs with LED. Really appreciate your video and help man!
My '95 4Runner front dome light assembly doesn't have that middle switch for the "DOOR" setting, so only the back seat dome light comes on when I open a door. if I swapped to one of these, would I have this feature?
Nice, I'll check mine also! I found a v6 model at a junkyard the same day I found this light and I took the light over to check fit. The 2 outside holes were there but were not threaded lime the inner 2. I'm curious to check mine now. Thanks for the post and info!!!
+Jon Widmer the 2 remaining screws that I got from the dome light were actually sheet metal screws and not machine type screws. All 4 screws came off the 4runner
If my 1989 4x4 doesn't have a light where the mirror is would this mod still work? Just wondering if the wiring is already there or if I have to do some electrical to do this?
Hmm whose to say you can’t upgrade a map light from a more modern vehicle? I have 2003 base Tacoma. How do I know what I can upgrade to? Great video, thanks
I got a dome light off a 95 4Runner to put on my 91 pickup. But the dome light from the suv has two buttons not three. Is there any difference between yours ? My light doesn’t work when plugged in and the bulbs look fine. Also the dome light I bought only has one little metal tab in the back to connect to. Is there any reason why it doesn’t turn on ?
Awesome video! I'm pursuing a project that's a bit different than this, and it's retrofitting one of these dome lights into my 1991 Land Cruiser which has a single little map light. My question is: what did you pay for this dome light at the Pick and Pull?
Thanks, appreciate it!! I didn't, that's the best part! My dad bought in back in 1996 (it's a 1994 model) and finally gave it to me in 2014 after bugging him for about 4 years.
went to the junkyard yesterday looking for SR5 trinkets for my '94 xtra cab pickup and came across a '98 and a '00 4Runner, one of which had map lights like you installed in this video (except tan with no center rocker switch) and the other had a bigger map light assembly that has the drop down sunglasses holder (and it's grey like my interior!). hopefully i can make it work! it has a bracket that is held in with the 3 screws for the mirror baseplate thing, and it reaches backward from the mirror and the map light assembly has a single screw passing up between the lights that threads into this bracket. not sure if the rear most part of the bracket is supposed to rest on some metal roof frame piece that i don't think my pickup has (how does one remove these thin vinyl headliners our pickups have anyway? I just got my truck not a month ago ha)
I'm not sure how to remove the headliner yet, never attempted it. I'd love to see if you can get that sunglass holder unit to work. I would love to have that in my Pickup!! If you do, please make a video. I'm sure there's a way to rig something together.
I did end up getting the sunglasses holder/map light assembly installed! It wasn't too bad but it did require chopping off a big section of that metal bracket that goes behind the headliner to hold it up. I cut off the rearmost "head" of the bracket since it's shaped to meet the front edge of a sunroof assembly frame (where it would just rest on some metal, no bolting or anything), which my pickup doesn't have. Before cutting off that section, fitting the bracket up behind the headliner from the hole up near the mirror would make it get to the first of those long headliner seams that our trucks have that span the entire width of the ceiling, holding the vinyl headliner up tight. So I didn't wanna tear that and decided to cut that section of the bracket off with my dremel to minimize headliner damage, especially because google leads me to believe these headliners are a pain in the ass to reinstall since apparently it requires removing the rear window and whatnot, plus they say it never goes in looking quite right like how the Toyota factory did it. Now all that's left is to run a power wire to it for the map lights to work. I grabbed the wire off the 4runner with the plug for the map lights and cut it with several feet of wire to work with. Wondering if I should just splice it in with the nearby dome light power wire or if that would cause any issues with too much current draw if both the dome light and the map lights were on at the same time (just put in an LED dome light the other day so maybe that helps decrease the amperage demand).
jon not trying to be rude but those to screw you didnt put in there they are thread just ypu need that one sharp screw to tear through the vinyl head liner
Hey Jon, I went to install this today. I have a 92. and I got the mirror from 92 or 93 sr5 which doesn't have the middle switch. the plug on the sr5 until looks different. It doesn't have the two connectors that go into the positive and negative...its not working for me. anytips
I wasn't aware they were different. Mine was a plug and play affair, no problems at all. I haven't come across the dome light that doesn't have the center button. Maybe that's why it has a different plug.
Kamrouz Vejin hey I know this post is a few months old, but did you get yours to work? I ran into the same issue today got the same dome light as you did with only one connector and no switch in the middle I have a 94 toyota pickup base model and it wasn't working for me either I took out the connector pins and switched them around and nothing, it ended up being the fact I hadn't screwed on the dome light and the screw acts like a ground and it worked once I screwed it on in place.
It looks like it was swapped. I wasn't the one that swapped it though. It was in there when I got the truck. I did swap the stereo and the pocket didn't look Oem.
Garage Built Hondas how test it cause i put battery. Power to cables. And try turn on and nothing happen i test bulb ligths and working so what wrong?? I saw on ebay many of these just have one pin on connector rigth so how fix it
I definitely wouldn't mind power windows, mine is manual. It's not that bad since the cabin is small and I can easily reach the passenger window crank. Usually I never roll the windows down especially lately with the temperature here in Texas!!
+J Wid Films You can get kits on eBay with power locks as well for $100 or less. I put the power windows in my '98 Dakota. Think about doing it. Would love to see the results.
Hey, I tried to do this with my 4runner, but mine never came with a mirror dome light. I had to splice into the middle dome light wire. But it doesn't work, and I'm not sure what The problem is.
I'm not sure either, sorry. I sold the truck last January and only did this mod once when I did it on my truck. I don't work on these trucks regularly.
First of all, GREAT VIDS MAN, I already did the speaker boxes and the clock on the dash, saw this one but my question is my truck is a extended cab and does not have the dome light there is in the middle of the cab... you think the wiring will be there for it as well?
Thanks a lot man I appreciate it!! Good question, but my guess would be no since you have the center dome light. I'd snoop around on the Toyota minis forums and see if someone could give you a definite answer. It might be easy to just run the existing wiring from the dome light now to that spot also.
I had the same issue. I ran a coat hanger through the dome light cavity up to the mirror mount. Attached two wires to the coat hanger and pulled them back to the old dome light location. I connected the wires to the old dome light wires leaving the plastic connector in place because I wanted to keep my old dome light as well as having this up grade. Now I have all the light I could ever want.
bro could you help me to confirm the signals from dome connector ? i am pretty sure they should be 12v and courtesy signal, and i have 200mv (almost ground) and courtesy signal. it would help me to fix it. thanks in advance.
I'm from Sri Lanka. I'm definiteley looking for this kind of a reading light for long time for my toyota hilux. Could you please send me a one. I'll pay you😐😐😐 please help me😐😐
