PARTS LIST + TOOLS LIST + PRO TIPS + SKIP-AHEAD LINKS BELOW:
This is how to replace the waterpump on a 2019 Chevy Suburban LT 1500 5.3L L83 engine. This water pump has 120,000 miles and was making a lot of rotational noise and beginning to weep antifreeze (dexcool) out of the front of the water pump housing. Upon inspection, the water pump pulley was also very loose, which meant the front waterpump bearing was the cause of the rotational noise that I was hearing. In this new LS style engine waterpump design, GM makes it VERY EASY to replace the waterpump with basic hand tools.
TOOLS:
You do not need a puller to remove the pulley, just a 10mm socket, 3/8 ratchet, a screwdriver, and a 1/2 inch ratchet for the belt tensioner. In the grand scheme of auto repair, this is a pretty easy repair to do.

Thank you for this video. I did this tonight to my suburban and it took me about an hour from start to finish. I even cleaned the throttle valve flap and MAF.....I appreciate you. I filled about 2 gallons back in and squeezed the hoses for a while to get any air out. Drove it for a while and it did not overheat.

2020 Tahoe 5.3L 42,000 miles and the water pump died. It is interesting to see how, over time, things are reengineered for simple replacement due to the unreliable parts we have to work with. 😅😅😁😁

@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue Год назад
Sorry for the delayed response. I sometimes use a little RTV to hold gaskets in place if they are wiggly. Or if the surface is not perfect, I will add a super thin layer. It is not necessary though, as you can see the factory did not do it.

Couple of questions, I have a 20’ Yukon Denali 6.2L. I assume it’s probably the same setup and repair steps correct? Also, do you have to bleed air out of the system after the install or just top off the coolant and good to go?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 8 месяцев назад
It should be the same process, and I didn’t bleed anything, I just topped it off and it was good to go.
@donaldwalker2671
@donaldwalker2671 7 месяцев назад
Just curious what induces air into the system? Is it because you opened it up?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 7 месяцев назад
@@donaldwalker2671 - yes, the coolant level is way down because most of it came out. Then when you refill it, the air often gets trapped in the little nooks and crannies inside the engine. So it often needs to “burp” itself to be adequately filled and working properly again.

What kind of noise was it making? I have a 2019 suburban with 48k an noticed the engine coolant is 2 inches below the cold line with a cold engine. I have a slight whine when I start the car not sure what it is similar to a power steering whine.
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 3 года назад
It had a bit of a rotational noise, somewhat similar to a power steering pump I suppose. If you pop your hood with your engine off, and try to wiggle the water pump pulley, you may find some play in it if it has gone bad. You can also look underneath the water pump to see if there is antifreeze coming out. With that being said, the serpentine belt tensioners on these engines fail often and make all kinds of noise. So I would check that out first.
