Hey Dustin, I'm in "quarantine" with my two kiddos. Single mom. Problem with our toilet. Replaced both the fill valve and the flush valve!!! (Very nervous about doing it- especially about pulling the tank, but what's a girl to do?) Your teaching is so clear and detailed- a necessity for the most inexperienced, like me! Happy to say, our toilet is working like a dream now and I did not have to compromise our isolation. (My son is severely disabled and medically fragile, especially respiratory baseline.) I'm so glad you were there to help virtually! Thank you MUCH!!

Thanks for the step by step instructions, BTW I got the 64 year old beat. Ha.

Just watched your video today and I really liked the fact that you weren't using the typical Kohler triangle seal unit for the 3 bolts especially. Several months ago I had a bolt leak on one of our 3 Kohler toilets and was deternined not to use Kohler's triangle seal unit. Instead I had done exactly what you showed in this video with the 3 bolts, rubber washers and metal washers. I think that is a much better way to seal the holes and get a good mount to the base. Thanks again.

@@homemend Hey Dusty, is it possible to over tighten the bolts connecting the tank back to the base of the toilet? I keep have a small drip from and I've been continuing to tighten the bolts but that seems to be making it worse. Also, my toilet has three bolts instead of two, one on each side and one in the back. I followed the directions about leaning on one side and then the other and I thought I had it on well but there continues to be a slow leak from between the tank and the base of the toilet. Should I empty out the tank remove it and try putting it on again or is it possible I may have a faulty gasket? Sorry for all the questions.
@homemend
@homemend 4 года назад
totally cool man...sorry to say but yes it will be trial and error...the only problem i see in over-tightening is not causing leaks but snapping the porcelain. faulty gasket is possible...if you're sure its a particular bolt...just replace the one..and see if it buttons it up....

This video helped TREMENDOUSLY! Problem is, I now need to redo everything because when I was putting on the new bolts, I wasn’t aware I needed to tighten the bolts to the tank first (I would have known all of this had I gotten to 4:25 and paid attention). It’s all good, just a small leak but I’ll fix it this weekend. Along with replacing 4 ceiling tiles in the kitchen that are drenched and sagging. I was figuring the supply line and knob would be the hardest part. I was wrong. I did need to readjust the fill valve because it was covering the hole/bolt thingie in the back that I need to now fix. Thanks for your knowledge. It is greatly appreciated! 👊🏼😷

Thanks Dustin! Just a comment about the metal washer inside the tank. Eventually it will rust, get the tank dirty and finally make the bolt leak again. You can only use the rubber washer inside. The rest is a great idea, though. Also, you can put another rubber washer to protect the bowl if you want. I recently used: bolt, rubber, tank, rubber, metal, nut, bowl, rubber, metal and nut. I bought the 3 bolts kit to get extra parts because my toilet needs only 2. Good job man!

That was genius and EXACTLY what I needed. Worked like a charm. One issue I'm finding is that now the tank doesn't fill up fast. Seems like it has bubbles/air coming from the other piece that's in the toilet bowl. Any thoughts on how to fix that? It takes about 6 minutes to fill up. Before it took about 1.

Thanks for your video. The procedure was well explained. The only problems that I ran into was that my toilet had a gasket that connected all three tank bolts and the kit I bought only provided two bolts and only enough metal washers and nuts for two bolts. It did provide the rubber washers for three bolts. So, I used one of the old bolts and two of the old nuts. I had to purchase the metal washers. Everything worked well and I had no leaks. Thanks Home Mender!

Now, the next thing I need to figure out on my toilet is why it flushes twice. The flapper doesn't come down fast enough to stop the second flush (which I been told is a surge flush).
@homemend
@homemend 5 лет назад
hey kevin...sounds to me like its one of two things. the flapper is too lightweight for the flush valve. (If you bought them in a kit then this probably isn't it) The second is you have too much water in the tank. You might try to adjust the water level. If you have a fluid master it has a sweet adjustment screw on it. If that doesn't do it you can lower the water level even more but you have to drain the tank and remove the fill valve to do this one..i hope this helps!
@kevinsnowden8430

Good vid. Only things I do other than what you did. I put rubber washer only under brass screw head, and only tighten with the nut / metal washer / rubber washer on bottom. Otherwise the brass screw head only seals against the metal washer. Admitedly this is all a very low pressure water container. After the job, I put a fresh kleenex flat on floor under any places water may leak. Shut off, filler base, etc. After a day, any drips will wrinkle the tissue. A pinch of talcum power sprinkled on floor also works.

hey shane!..there may be a few different ones but it should not wobbler after snug it down, slight play but no wobble.. replacing your flush valve ensures you have one that fits. i hope this helps!

hy iniobong.....sawzall with stubby blade? or possible side cutters on the nut or bolt to break it off?...these can be a bear..

Great video! I was wondering if you had any tips for my problem. I have a 3 bolt tank, and a 2 bolt bowl. I lined the screws/washers/nuts up the way you did in this video, and everything seemed to be good, until I had to line the tank up onto the 3 bolt metal bracket that goes between the tank/bowl. Then everything kept being wobbly, no matter how much I tightened the nuts, and the tank started leaking... even with the double rubber/metal washers tightened in. I'm just wondering if the 3 bolt tank/2 bolt combo was common for older toilets (because it is an older toilet), or if some previous owner Frankenstein'd a toilet, and I should save myself more stress and just buy a new toilet. Thanks!

hey tommy! man i was thinking the frankenstein'd and then you mentioned it....seems like someone may have installed an "extra "tank on your bowl....the all in one box toilet kits at the depot are usually under 100 bucks and hassle free.. i hope this helps! thanks so much for commenting!

Great video! Now I just need to figure out why the tank is still loosing water. The tank goes completely dry so I know it's not the flapper. All parts are new in the tank. It's cranked down pretty well.
@homemend
@homemend 5 лет назад
hey john! hmmm if the tank goes completely dry, it should be leaking somewhere..tank to bolt gasket, tank bolt seals, fill valve hole? certainly odd. ive crossed mystery toilets before, after fighting with them a while, i would just change them out.. would love to know how it comes out...thanks for commenting!

went totally dry again. That's it. Calling my plumber guy to see what the deal is. Thinking I'll just leave everything apart and let him put it all back together. That should save me time with him having to tear it down.

Thanks for the video, it helped a lot. I changed from a float ball system to a flapper valve. The water wont stop running unless I push the button that the ball rod would normally turn off. Any ideas?

@homemend

hey miles...if the valve isnt cutting off because the float, you can bend that metal arm holding the float which causes it to shut off a little sooner...if its just not turning off, the fill valve is your problem..i hope this helps!

hey makeveli! there are a couple sizes available but the one in this video is the most common...depending on the toilet, you may want to go to a plumbing store specifically...i hope this helps!

hi david, you may not be getting enough force behind the water to keep the flapper up long enough for the water to get out of the tank.. you might try incresing the water level in the tank. i hope this helps

gotcha..you would need to remove the bolts holding them together, usually 2 or 3 ...loosen with a screw driver and wrench, or if they were seized up, you may need to cut them....
