Thank you for doing these videos. I am a single 54 year old women who is on a fixed income. Because I raised 3 kids by myself I've had to learn to do most everything in my house, welding, plumbing, carpentry etc and thanks to YT and people like you who post how tos I can do it safely. My 40 year old furnace finally gave up so here I am!

40 years of DIY, and the random amount of useful stuff you just spit out actually taught me quite a few new tricks. Kudos man, you know what you're doing.

I installed a Goodman 5 ton split system 18 years ago and its still working great. I ran the line set, built the plenum... installed all new duct work. The only thing I did not do was braze the line set and charge they system. *** NOTE *** It took several phone calls before some one would come and braze line and charge system because I installed the system myself. The business that did come out made it clear that if the system did not work it would be time and materials to fix. The service guy charged the system, looked around, asked a few questions and said I did a very good job and that he would hire me if I was looking for work.

Great video! Completed our DIY furnace replacement last night. This video gave me the confidence to tackle the job. 25 year old Carrier to new Goodman. I had replaced lots of components over the years on the Carrier. Thanks for sharing valuable content.

I'm definitely gonna tackle my own project in updating my furnace ( I was told by professional Hvac services) supposedly it's over sized in my home & my home ( 1950's ) still have the under sized air ducts & a system that's to large .. which case in ohio my home was definitely freezing ( quick heat up by furnace & then a lengthy cool down ) definitely a large number of electric heaters plugged in to survive 12 degree weather ( trying to be proactive before winter ) I have a toddler In the home ( 😅 first winter in my home )

At the same time, I’m so fed up with these repair guys I won’t even let them come to the house. Had an A/C issue with one and they ended up by two new ones after they “Looked at em”. I’ve heard nothing but good with the Goodman brand. Truly appreciate these videos!!!

Where I live, there is a local company that will let you order equipment online and pickup locally. I do have the EPA certification to buy and handle refrigerant. I saved about $4500 installing my own furnace, coil, plenum, and condenser.

thank you I am in the process of a furnace replacement myself I allready replaced the rented water heater for a used one I bought ( works perfect ) now Im looking at the 50 yr old furnace to replace just not sure what size as theres no labels or any info anywhere on the unit I think it must have come out of the ark, but I have pretty good problem saving skills and engineering and tool experience , actually the gas thing was easy with the water heater , I had to extend a pipe but with help from home depo guys guiding me on the right sealant for the threads and fittings it was a breeze , what I have to find out is what btus I need for the sq footage of the home for the right size furnace Im 75 yrs old but the mind is still in working order, thanks again

Thank you, your videos helped me a lot. I put in a new Goodman furnace this year before the cold hit. On another topic: REPAIRS::I did find out that should there be a problem where I need to call a technician, it costs $145 for them to just show up which could rack ups hefty bill. And some people can’t afford the repair side either. I think it would be wise to design a system where you have 2 identical furnaces hooked up and ready to go in case #1 furnace has issues, you could turn off power to #1 and turn power on to #2,, then go back to bed, knowing your family is safe and warm. You can then fix #1 later and not have to pay ridiculous $145 labor rates.

I did a Goodman 100 Mbuh, two stage, 80% for $2050.- That includes the $100.- 24 ga riser and a 36” break; sheet metal, black pipe and valve. I am going to do another at my daughter’s. I reused the thermostat. I am really happy with HVAC Direct.

Should I install a new heat pump to replace the old gas furnace and central air? Advantages and disadvantages ,please advise. Thank you.

I bought a house furnace was gone.forced hot air,gas..I bought a goodman 100,000 btu single stage.went off the gas line that was already installed.lp..my one question is does the manifold and or line pressure need to be checked with a manometer before i fire it up? Its a goodman m9s80 with lp conversion 07. Also there was a 16x20 filter with a return duct hanging.was curious if this should be a larger return?.Thanks!..great video!

Hey Dave just want to say thank you for all the great information you provided. I do notice that you do check air flow, gas pressure. Is this not required? I purchased goodman furnace and ac combo down flow and ac is an addition, didn't have it before. Just concerned with adjusting pressure or flow, do these units come preset or do they need to be adjusted? Gces800603an, gsx130241

You can totally install yourself. But I advise people to really make sure that they know what they're doing before they start it. I am just learning this under a plumbing, Heat, AC, gas, company rightnow. I was working with a gas fitter today. I installed a Carrier furnace. He had me doing the gas connections fittings and he would check on me. And I was extremely nervous. I was double checking and triple checking my connections. Testing for leaks. But I guess he said I did a really good job, because all of the gas lines were run perfectly he said. The job entailed that I had to remove the hot water tank in order to even get the furnace out because space was so tight.But I did a lot of it by myself for the first time. He was obviously monitoring, as it's the law in Canada, and I can't be working on gas lines without a red seal gas fitter with me, But I pretty much did it on my own and that was the goal today. I feel good. He was mostly doing the cutting of the sheet metal for the vents, and electrical today and not me, because he said that part had to be perfect. I'm learning a lot. And it feels good.

I didn’t know that about Goodman that is good to know. I replaced my system this summer, I used Frigidaire equipment that I had to purchase through a friend who is a licensed hvac contractor. My home didn’t have any ductwork so I had to install all of my supply duct through my attic and make a return. All in all it took me about 80 hours.

Great video series! Do you have any recommendations on Goodman vs AirQuest (from hvac direct)? I'm primarily looking for ease of installation, quality, and replacement part availability/cost. (The AirQuest install guide seemed much more involved.) Also, is there a video on the list of things that need to be tuned, if any (eg valve flow rate, blower speed, etc). I might have missed it in this video, or are they generally good to go (factory pre-set) right out of the box?

I have nordyne system from 2002. I just replaced the inducer motor but am looking to replace the whole system next year. Is the install process for a 1 stage vs 2 stage furnace any different ? Thanks for the video !!!

Yeah it's easy enough, I always do my own work on everything, I replaced my 35 year old Lenox G11-e that I installed myself 18 years ago in my house that never had central heat or ducts, this time around I decided on a Goodman 80,000 BTU furnace, it was $1600, delivered fast, and I decided to put it in a more central location and run all new ducts- getting rid of the old 6" round stuff. My mistake on the Lenox was I figured two 6" round ducts were enough for the cold air return, while it worked fine trouble free for 18 years I decided to go considerably larger this time with two 8x16 returns to oppside ends of the house using the cavity a couple of former doorways that were moved provided in the walls to use. I also added an outside air electric damper to bring in fresh outside air, and unlike the Lenox the Goodman takes its combustion air from outside, so that meant running a couple of 2" PVC pipes. The biggest problem was the 8x16 and other sized ducts, Menards had SOME, HD had SOME, what I needed for some vertical elbows to go around a support, the plenum and return air box, and some other pieces were all special order with 2-3 week wait. I needed to make a small change and yep, the duct take offs and whatnot were special order, 2-3 weeks more wait time... I located a GOOD, well made filter rack on another site- Chad Vincent, BLG2-1625-3 Furnace Filter Rack 16x25 $85.99 it arrived in good shape, nice thick metal, with a spring loaded gasketed door on the side edge to access the filters. I was able to fit two 1" filters in it, a merv 11 filter and a cheaper one in front of it. I had to extend my basement gas line- removing the "leg" that went to the Lenox, adding a valve and flexible connector with the new safety cut-off in it, run a new electric line, and did both myself. Happy so far! One other issue I ran into, the drain Goodman has is a rubber hose you connect to a black pastic fitting that has a 45 degree angle barb and a straight round outlet, the maual etc didn't say a word about what fitting to use to exit that black barb connector that comes thru the cabinet, I even took it to the hardware store and we couldnt find anything that either inserted in or over the end of it, I couldnt even find photos showing what is used because those i found either had a connection for a pump which I didnt need, or the furnace wasnt connected in the photo, I knew i needed an open Tee and a barb to a hose but, eventually I found out that black fitting takes 1/2" PVC pipe glued into it, geez! could have had that in the install manual... so I glued in a short stub and a Tee, a barb and ran clear 5/8" hose to the floor drain. I do prefer to raise the furnace up off the floor, I did with 4 concrete blocks, never know if water might come in, and you dont want the furnace sitting in a few inches of water! Thankfully I don't have a stupid air conditioner coil to contend with and complicate things with freon lines, condensors and all that rubber, so it was just a straight furnace replacement, for air conditioning I'm considering a couple of mini splits to put in next spring.

Question. What to do if the replacement furnace dimensions are not quite the same. For example, replacing a type C 21 inch wide furnace with another type C that is shorter by about 7 inches. Is it OK to put blocks underneath the furnace to increase the height?

How big is the main supply line coming straight out of the furnace 12" ?

Your customer got the Goodman GM9s801005cn 100,000 BTU, 80% furnace, I bought the 80,000 BTU 96% to replace the 35 year old Lenox 100,000 BTU G11-e which was 80% and also took it's combustion air from the room which was a pain, the old flue used to sometimes push cold air down depending on wind, so I think what I have now is so much better- taking it's air from outside, and 16% more efficient. My NW Iowa house is about 1,100 sq ft but I have R100 in the attic, all double glas windows, and the walls are at least R21 as I added 2" of celotex on the inside over the old plaster and lath exterior walls, and sheeted with 1/2" CDX topped with 1/2" sheetrock. It was down in the teens recently and the Goodman is working fine, it doesn't seem to need to come on a lot or frequently to hold the temperature right on 73 degrees

Furnace from 1993 is going to give out soon so debating on installing it myself. I have all the proper tools just not sure if i should pull the trigger myself

Thanks for the great video. I’m gettin. Ready to tackle this and am a pretty competent DIYer. Could you answer a question: Mechanically, the process looks straight forward. I’m wondering about sizing my furnace. My current furnace was undersized when I bought the house. It’s 45k BTU, the house is about 1500 sq ft, poorly insulated, has old windows and I live in the north. The house was a duplex when I bought it and I converted it back to a single family. Now this furnace can’t keep the 1st floor above 50 degrees in the winter running constantly and set to max. My question is- I found an 80k that will fit in the space and attach to the plenum very easily. How much do I have to think about gas supply. I’m only supply this, a 40 gallon water heater, and a gas stove. Should I be ok? Also- the manual has a start-up procedure that references measuring the pressure and adjusting the valve. This seems technical. I’m wondering if that’s a fine tuning adjustment and if I’m likely fine with factory settings. Long comment. Thanks for the feedback and great videos!

At 5:30, hardware stores carry a pack of wrenches that allow super easy installation and removal of box nuts like this for very cheap. If you have to do more than a couple of these, they pay for themselves. If this is the only project you’re doing that requires this then don’t waste the money and use the tip in the video

I installed my own furnace 35 years ago, looking to replace it. But the warranty on Goodman says it will not cover unless installed by a licensed contractor. How do you get around that?

Q: Looking for new & simple direct vent (no chimney) gas BOILER (80% efficiency is fine) (not a furnace) that has best shot to last 20 to 25 years and is low maintenance - zero bells and whistles. My focus is not efficiency. Priority = low maintenance and longevity. Currently running 1991 Slant Fin V90 - 80% Direct Vent - baseboard forced hot water - has been excellent, but time to change out. Thoughts, guys/gals? TY!

Also how about a how to on installing an a/c system? Condenser, line set and A coil. I would like to install the a/c in the future.

if you want to replace your own hvac units, go with goodman cause thats the only brand that you can buy without being a contractor lol.

This is not a diss, just a question since I’m not as familiar with furnaces. With that being said, I’m fairly knowledgeable within these types of machines since I’m a steam/hydronic boiler contractor in CA. Anyways my question is, do you not have tune air and gas pressures to achieve a satisfactory emissions? Or even to check that the pressures are setting are correct? This could have been done off camera I suppose. However, I didn’t see you fiddle with the gas valve at all. My main concern is telling weekend warriors that changing out a furnace is as easy as 1, 2, 3, and then having them flood their house with carbon monoxide because they actually have no idea what they’re doing.

Last year I had my 80% gas furnace replaced for $3200. I thought about installing it myself. The factory wanted $2500 for one. It took 5-person crew 8 hours to remove and haul away the old one and install the new one with a new plenum and chimney liner. It would have taken me a week to do it. I figure it was $700 well spent.

I was thinking along the line of perhaps buying my own Goodman furnace, then hiring someone to help install it. I live just a few miles from a Goodman factory outlet. But when I went there and inquired about seeing what models they had available, they said they only deal with dealers.
