Nice Video explaining the steps of replacing the Filter Head that apparently has been designed to Fail after the Warranty has lapsed? I'm a Retired Professional Wrench, I used a translucent green plastic party cup 🥤 to make a "Shim' from. I cut out the outer diameter free hand with a pair of Scissors ✂ and cut the inner diameter free hand as well with a "Box Knife" on a "Kitchen Cutting Board". The home made Shim has a slight interference fit over the center Tube (with O-Ring Seals) and will stay in place nicely. Anyone other than myself changing out a Filter in Future History will unlikely know that the Shim is even there? Works like a Champ ☺ Randy AKA randog311

Perfect video. The filter was making a grinding noise when I tried to replace it and searching the GE sight revealed it was most likely the water filter head. Bought the part, followed the video, and done in 20 minutes. Water dispenses much faster as well. Thanks for posting this!

Great job on the video, John! It simplified the job wonderfully. Much better than the AppliancePartsPros instructions. As an added bonus, I got to listen to the cool song in my head while replacing the assembly and hose. Love the vintage-style graphics too. Cheers.

I recommend detaching (with water turned off) the water supply line at the upper rear of the refrigerator where it attaches to the head assembly, then slowly engage the water supply to determine if water will flow without obstruction. If it flows without a problem, the issue to likely the head assembly. Best of luck.

I am glad it helped. This will be a recurring problem, so be prepared to place it again. I just replaced my unit again last weekend.

Am going to try replacing mine, although a little different. The SONG was GREAT!! Need to tell people to turn off water source.... LOL

If you have changed the filter and are not able to dispense water, you likely need this head assembly part. When I replaced my head assembly, only very little water would dispense. The supply line apparently becomes clogged over time. Since replacing my head assembly, the water dispensed without a problem.

I recommend using only genuine GE parts for system components. If it were shelving or some other unimportant part, I would trust parts from a third party supplier.

Thank you very much... Might be worth replacing. Should I order new head from GE? Reside near Hamilton, ON. Thx.

Very helpful video - just one question - do I need to turn off all the water in my house before disconnecting the hoses?
@DIYFixer331
@DIYFixer331 10 лет назад
Yes, the water must be turned off to complete the replacement. Generally, a shut off valve is located on the line where the hose connects to the water supply. This must be completed BEFORE attempting to disconnect the hose. Just remember to turn the water back on once the replacement part installation is complete and sliding the unit in place.

John Glover Ok, that makes sense. I've never looked behind my fridge, so I didn't realize there was a valve back there too. One more question, but this is more curiosity than fix-related - if my filter head is clogged, and all water goes through that, any idea why my ice maker isn't impacted? I fill my water bottle twice a day with ice, so I go through a lot of ice, and it's never run out.
@DIYFixer331
@DIYFixer331 10 лет назад
Manu Bumb If the smallest amount of water is able to make its way through the head assembly, it will go to the ice maker. Once the line becomes completely clogged, water will not reach the dispenser nor the ice maker. The ice maker will continue to produce ice until the head assembly is 100% clogged.

Your video was very helpful. Is there any way to just change the tubing that connects the filter head to the bottom of the fridge? My water dispenser tube is punctured and leaks water. My main issue is disconnecting the tubing from the water filter head. Any help would be great!
@DIYFixer331

theshreddar21, if I were you, I would purchase a hard plastic, grooved coupling from a local hardware store, cut the line at the puncture, insert the coupling and secure it with metal pipe clamps. The plastic couplings are readily available at Homedepo and Lowe's.

John great video. Mine quit dispensing also after changing filter . I took a rubber washer from a hose and put on top of the filter screwed it in and it worked till this time .Do you think I also should replace the top assembly? Thanks

Yes, based on your description of the problem I think it is the filter head assembly. I have experienced the problem twice and installing a new head assembly resolved the issue both times.

Hi DIY Fixer, thanks for that musical! My GE fridge has all of a sudden started creating a hammering noise + slow flow when I press the dispenser valve. This persists even with the filter bypass plug. Does that mean it is the filter head that needs to be replaced or is it the inlet valve? It seems that the noise emanates from the filter housing, because I see that the main water supply line hose starts vibrating when I depress the dispenser lever and the noise does seem to emanate from the top. But I am not certain. Any advise on identifying the culprit? Thank you for your assistance.

My water dispenser works on my GE profile but the icemaker isn't getting any water. I replaced the water valves but still doesn't work. If I pour water manually into the ice maker it makes ice so somehow it's not getting water. Any ideas out there on what the problem could be?

John, I replaced the GE SmartWater MSWF water filter in my GE profile refrigerator today. When I removed the old filter, water continued to spew out. Thank goodness I put a thick towel over the top shelf before I started. The refrigerator was installed in 2008 and this has happened to me before. Sometimes it will leak when I change the filter and the next time it won't. Do you think the assembly has gone bad and needs to be replaced? Thanks for the great video.

Yes, if I were you I would replace the head assembly. The filter head should not leak when the filter is removed. Replacing the head assembly will solve your problem. Good luck

I would encourage you to search eBay for the replacement part. In my most recent purchase, I bought the head assembly from an eBayer seller by name of PartsShippedQuick. The part was new and came in GE packaging. Just did a quick search and saw the part is $50, which includes shipping. You should compare the price with GE, but I think GE charges more for the exact same part.

Hi! I've attempted replacement of my GE SMART FILTER, in my Profile-2007- 2x recently, but could not get normal or any flow thru my freezer door dispenser (nor ice). It was unable to install a new one until I removed the cover & could see better. Did I put too much pressure on the head? Break it? The "dirty filter" worked just fine & I did fill the new filters first, but, a weak stream would abruptly stop! DO U THINK I NEED THIS PART? Thx- L.D. (H.D. est. repair @$140. incl. fee of $90.)

Terriffic video. My water stopped despensing after the filter was changed. Could this be the head or line. I just don't get water stop flowing just because the filter was changed.

If water does not dispense when using a new filter or the plastic filter bypass, there is a high likelihood that your water filter head assembly needs replacing. I replaced my head assembly for the second time since owning our Profile approximately a month ago. I am not sure what causes the head assembly to become clogged but it is probably lime deposit. I actually dissected my most recent head assembly in an effort to determine what was clogging it and where, but I was not able to detect any clogged areas. I have a video of the dissection that I can post if you are interested. Once the new head assembly was replaced, the water dispensed immediately on both occasion. The problem is obviously caused by poor head assembly design.

John the new filter head did the trick. The video made it an easy exchange I guess the biggest thing was seeing that it was easy enough tackle myself. Save me a lot of money for a tech to come out burning time TROUBLESHOOTING. Yeah right. Thanks again.

great vid. thanks. though i was hoping youtube could tell me how to move the fridge away from the wall while it's still full of the 7000lbs of shit my wife has crammed in it. but i know i'm speaking to fellow husbands, so it's obvious how naive i'm trying to be to the inevitable... wish me luck.
