This video will discuss how to diagnose and replace a GE Refrigerator water filter housing part number: wr17x20862. Be sure to turn off water and unplug refrigerator before performing this repair. Further videos will discuss more details for more in depth diagnosis of a failed filter housing.
One quick tip is this, if you suspect a failed filter housing - With the water turned off, remove the hose leading to the top of the blue water inlet valve at the back left of your refrigerator. With the hose now in a bucket to catch the water, turn the water supply back on. This indicates a clogged filter or failed filter housing.
You need to determine if it is the filter housing or a clogged filter. This is most easily done by replacing the filter with a bypass filter (WR02X11705) which came with your refrigerator and repeat the step above. If the water starts flowing in to your bucket, it is not likely a filter housing issue but rather a clogged filter.
If the problem still persists with the bypass inserted, you can then assume a failed filter housing.

Easy to follow step-by-step clear instructions and video was greatly appreciated. Replaced with ease. One tweak might be to take off the water filter before disconnecting the waterlines so the water line doesn’t drain onto the floor, otherwise 10/10!

I needed to replace my filter housing and watched this video to see how to do it. The video is excellent and helped my finish the job in less than a half hour. The only problem I had was getting a good angle on the nut driver to loosen the screws at the top of the housing.

Our GE side by side refrigerator problem is: I think our little black button is stuck inward in that housing, because its continuously releasing water from the center of the housing when you remove the old filter. Thank you for the helpful video, now I know what to buy and how to swap it out.

Purchased ONE aftermarket filter and destroyed my Frigidaire water filter housing. Now I've learned that the housing part is no longer available so I've purchased the bypass part

Appreciate the detailed video, do you think using a non GE filter would cause the filter housing to fail? I use Waterdrop filters that fit my fridge yet the repairman said I have to use GE brand.
@GraceAppliance
@GraceAppliance Год назад
From my experience, yes. That's the case. The ramp on the aftermarket filters are slightly different than the OEM and it damages the housings, Unfortunately.

I replaced the water filter housing following your instructions, but there is no water coming from the dispenser. What do I do now?

Hi Steve, Sorry to hear about the issues. If your water from your door doesn't work, but your icemaker still does it is most likely due to a frozen water line inside your freezer door. You can confirm this by attempting to insert a 8 to 12 inch zip tie up inside the spout where the water enters your glass. If it will not fully insert, you have a frozen water line. I make a tool designed to thaw this quickly vs having to thaw with a hair dryer. If that's your issue check it out here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DJFFT62/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B01DJFFT62&linkCode=as2&tag=graceapplianc-20&linkId=2f06491399cb975ee13d7010cb760aad Let me know if you have any questions. Andy, it’s me again. Last time you helped me with the control board problem and today I need your help with my water dispenser. Today I found out that my fridge is not dispensing water though my ice maker is making ice. I took off the filter and pressed the dispenser. Nothing is coming out under the housing. I proceeded to put the filter back and heard rumbling. I was alarmed and took it out again to inspect, but was not able to smoothly install the filter afterwards. Water had ceased coming out of the dispenser prior to me removing the filter. Should I suspect a water housing problem or filter problem? I initially thought about a frozen line but the ice maker is making ice. What are your thoughts?

Hi Anthony, sorry to hear about the issues with the dispenser. So, frozen lines inside the door are quite common. The quickest way to test to see if this is your issue is to try to insert a zip tie in to the dispenser water line. If it inserts fully, it's likely not frozen, but it you can only insert a few inches in to the line, it is frozen. Alternatively, there is a blue water line fitting near the freezer door hinge which you can disconnect by depressing the collar on it as you're gently pulling the water line apart. Then, try the water again. If the water flows now, this would mean it's frozen in the door. The icemaker will still work if the line is frozen. So, I'd try this first. Let me know what you find out.

When I fit the filter in, water shoots out the back where the hose lines go in. Ive changed filters and it still does it. Does this mean I need to replace the housing?
@GraceAppliance

Hey, you likely have a cracked housing or hose that connects to the housing. If you uninstall the bolts from the housing to drop it down slightly. You should be able to visually see where it's cracked at.

My water lines plug into a blue cylinder and don't have a bolt. I can't figure out how to unplug them.
@GraceAppliance
@GraceAppliance 5 лет назад
You may be talking about what's called a John guest fitting. This has a small collar around the base of the line. You need to depress the collar as you gently pull out on the water line and it will slide out. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks

@@GraceAppliance ... Hello Sweetheart... Mine is the same as Sarah's, I believe... It's a 13 yr. old GE Profile Side by Side Model # PSC23MGTD-cc... I know about how to depress and remove the tubing etc... My problem is that there's a U shaped tubing in the same bottom left corner of the back... That has become brittle over the past 13 yrs. and broke right at the bottom of the U... Where the pressure from the bend and heat generated in that area has caused it to become hard and brittle!!... So, My question is... Is it even possible to replace that entire old tubing... Or should I just try and cut off the old brittle part of the U shaped tubing (where it bends) and use a coupling to add some new tubing to that area!!??... And also is their a particular type of insulation that would be best to protect it from the heat and drying out so fast again!!??... I would Greatly Appreciate Any and All advice you can give me on this matter!!... Thank You Sooo Much for the video... You are Excellent at thoroughly explaining things and make it Alot easier to understand... Unlike some others on here!!😒🙄🤗... Hope to hear from you soon... Thanks Again!!😊

Mary Durham hi Mary, thanks for the kind words and you’re most welcome. Now, as you mentioned, the lines do get brittle due to age and heat off of the compressor. Like you said, you can simply take a longer length of new tubing (1/4” outside diameter) and patch in a new piece using a John guest fittings. It will work, and would probably be fine so long as the line is in good shape further away from the compressor. But, this is the only option outside of replacing the water filter housing as shown in this video because the lines are attached to the part itself and non removable. Also, one other issue with doing it this way is you’ve got to deal with a way to connect it back up to the water valve because they are threaded back on with a flared plastic piece at the end. Not impossible, just a hassle to know which parts to use. The best recommendation and safest route for you is to replace the water filter housing as shown in this video. Check out the description for links to the product which helps the channel greatly. Please let me know if you have any questions! Thanks, Andy

@@GraceAppliance ... Hi Andy... Thanks Sooo Much for your response... I'm just a little confused about.. Why your tubing comes straight down from behind the lil' metal bracket leading to the Filter... And the one ours has... the U shaped 5/ 16" tubing inside the back of the fridge that leads to the Water dispenser only!!??... In otherwords, our Ice maker works fine and is also hooked up to the Filter... And the only problem was the Filtered Water was not getting to the dispenser, because of the broken U shaped tubing... Which kinda makes me wonder how it was getting to the ice maker!!??🤔... Sorry, I guess what I'm asking... Does any of this make a difference... As I forgot to mention that the Ice maker has always worked fine, (except of course for the actual Dispenser is obviously defective, As we've bought and replaced the entire assembly twice and the Metal prong that turns it has broken off the piece of plastic on the back of it within a week or 2 both times!!!😠)... but that's a whole nother Headache, Sorry.... But if you can explain the prior question... Why that is!!??... And if it makes a difference in your analysis??.. Sorry, to be a bother... If your busy there's no rush, Just when you can find the time would be much Appreciated!!💖... Thanks again Andy!!😊

Mary Durham Ok, so without seeing it in person it’s a little tough to understand exactly which tube is cracked, but yes I believe the cracked tube is the tube that feeds the dispenser only. The path of the water is as follows: a water supply line that comes from the wall. It hooks up to one tube on the water filter housing. The water travels through the water filter then back the the water valve inlet. So, filtered water passes through the water valve then branches out to either the icemaker or the dispenser. These are two separate valves so they can fail independently as yours have. You’ve got a line they runs from the valve to the icemaker. Then, You’ve got a line for the dispenser which then runs through the interior of the fridge via a reservoir to pre chill the water before it gets to your glass, then through a line at the freezer door hinge (John guest fitting) and through the freezer door to your dispenser. (Both of these lines enter and exit from a small hole behind the fridge directly under the fridge section) So, I think the cracked one in your case is the line that runs to the reservoir from the valve. Does that make sense?
