Are all plugs like that compatible with all power cords? I have an electrolux vac and the info tag has worn off. I don't know the voltage. If I want to buy one like you have, what do you call it? I'll be getting it on Amazon. Thanks. UPDATE: I just found them on Amazon, looks like 15 amp will do the trick.

DO NOT BUY A THREE PRONG IF REPLACING A 2 PRONG. IT IS NOT NEEDED! Only difference between a 2 & 3 prong is the 3 prong has a ground. 2 for 2 and 3 for 3.
@discusobscurum2194

It seems he may not have had a choice - point being that the 2 prong polarized replacement plugs are too small to handle that gauge of wire. Unless he were to strip off a lot of that insulation so they would fit, but that would create a new problem. Another option would be a nonpolarized heavy duty plug, which would handle the gauge, but be totally inappropriate, as it the vaccuum needs to be polarized. The 3 prongs available at hardware stores have larger exit points for the bigger gauge. And the prongs are both the same size! But you can't incorrectly plug them in with a ground prong present! While it is implied with the plug he installed that it is grounded, the appliance could simply be labled as not grounded.

While I can easily find some heavy-duty polarized, ungrounded replacement plugs at my local Ace, they're not available everywhere (for some reason)

Labor will always be what gets you every single time so it's always been wiser to do it yourself when you can. My younger brother took his car to the dealership to have his battery replaced once. Once. He was young, he never made that mistake again. I don't remember the exact numbers as it was in the 90's, but the labor was 2.5x the cost of the battery (dealership prices, mind you, which are always higher but still..). For this repair, either DIY or buy a new one; the repair would probably cost nearly as much as a new appliance

A have a case with a dehumidifier, I have to replace the plug end every three or four months because it gets burned after a hot spot is produced in one of the prongs. In using a plug similar to the one you use NEMA5-15P . Seems to be that after a while one of the screw contact forms a hot spot and overheat the blade. I'm thinking todo a try with another type plug end which terminal is a compressed hole

I don’t think glue would work. That prong received a lot of leverage when removed. It also needs to carry electrical continuity. Maybe some sort of weld like solder would work, but even then that’s a pretty small work area.

Shouldn't you replace with a 2-prong plug?
@ThriftyGarage
@ThriftyGarage 7 месяцев назад
It doesn't negatively affect anything to have the extra prong. The 3rd prong is a ground. So it literally connects the plug to the earth. Obviously it serves no function in this application because it is not actually grounding the wire it is connected to. But in this situation it provides a little more support when plugged into the wall. Hopefully preventing it from getting yanked out and breaking off another prong.

Polarized simply means that there is only one way to plug into the wall. Old outlets were only two prong, and not polarized. You could flip over the plug and still plug it in. The newer plugs and sockets are polarized if they have one large spade and one small spade. Check out my Christmas light install video for a closer look.
