Hmmm... firstly; I love Daru :). Secondly; I have installed quite a few retro fit windows, but this was a great video, I knew nothing about that liquid flashing. Thirdly; I love Daru. Always fun to watch, informative, smart and beautiful. Be safe.

How do you deal with the moulding / gap between the brick and window frame when retrofitting a houle that was originally finished with brick on the outside?
@DaruDhillon
@DaruDhillon 4 месяца назад
If it’s not too big I would use a foam backer rod and caulk.

Love that you bring to attention the use of liquid flashing for the simple reason of replacing a window, some of the old framing resist taping and it pops off. Great video. That’s a big ass window for you to muscle around alone, but you managed . See you on the next.

Love your tips. I think I used that same blue caulking. Any ideas for how to unscrew the band from the sausage gun if someone accidentally let that stuff set up in its threads?
@MoonbeamAcres

Would a can opener work perhaps? Maybe a hand cranked one?
@DaruDhillon
@DaruDhillon 4 месяца назад
This brand is comes in a casing like a sausage. So you can easily cut the end off with a utility knife.
@ChristopherCurtis
@ChristopherCurtis 4 месяца назад
@@DaruDhillon Thanks, sorry if I wasn't clear. I cut the sausage roll, but instead of just flowing out of the cut nozzle end, some of the caulk flowed into the threads. Now I can't unscrew the end. I've picked out what I can see but haven't had any luck using a vice grip and clamps. Open to other ideas... ;-)

Great job!!! I plan to build a garageominium and adding a window facing east over my kitchen sink area. I understand that I must measure and build a frame for it with headers etc. but cutting into the exterior metal wall has me a little apprehensive. How would you start that project if it were yours? And what tools would be needed? I always enjoy your videos and feel like I'm one of your cheerleaders out here cheering you on with pride in my heart watching you do what you do. You give me inspiration that I can also do it, maybe not as fast or with the confidence that you have, and most certainly won't look as good doing it (because I'm probably close to twice your age) but by God, if those little whippersnappers that are building houses on so many other channels can do it, then this ole broad can! LOL

Wow a garageominium what a great project! Hats off for taking on projects like that. As we get older its good to have patience and take the time you need to do the work. For the metal cutting I would use a grinder with a metal cutting blade. Mark it out from the outside and wear glasses. Love the idea of adding a window over your kitchen sink. I'm a big fan of natural light! Good to hear from you and thanks for the kind thoughts!

oh and receded led lights. was wondering and had to search. i guess you just pull them down and hope for the best?
@DaruDhillon
@DaruDhillon 4 месяца назад
For recessed lights you can pull them down and investigate. They make really nice thin ones, wafer lights. They are affordable and easy to install. I have a video in my lighting playlist if you’d like help with the installation.

never in a million years did i think... but you do give great tips and must leave everyone in wonder. just moved to a new place and need blinds/curtains - whatever is out there. i can't decide. i'd rather not put in too many holes or anything really. not asking you this because you are female. i do need help with what's easy and what's out there these days. you're probably not looking for too easy but.. i dunno? do you know of any temporary things that won't do damage?
@DaruDhillon

Best advice for curtains is to try and find a stud to mount your brackets or hardware. I like snap toggles if you need an anchor. Good luck!

I'll keep my original 1939 wood windows, thanks. They'll last another 100 years, unlike that vinyl garbage that is designed to fail in 20 years. And with storm windows installed, I get 95% insulation efficiency. Not to mention that they look a million times better.

If you’re happy with your windows that’s awesome! Not everything needs replacing. There is also a charm and nostalgia with original windows.

@@DaruDhillon Thank you, Daru. I'm so stressed over so many historic windows going in the landfill because people are ignorant and have been taken in by the vinyl window industry. (Mine still have their wavy glass.)

Hits every pitfall of this type of video: Rushes through the steps, makes it sound like it's the easiest thing in the world, never addresses what to do when -- not if -- things don't go as planned.

Didn't your Momma teach you any better? If you can't say something nice, just don't say anything at all. It must make you feel good to bully a Woman. Well let me tell ya something Wingnut, she is our leader and there's legends of us out here backing her so take your insults and keep on walking! I've never ever liked a bully...

Whether you can or can't you are right. When a problem comes up, they often do when renovating, I think of those moments as an opportunities to learn. One of the titles in this video is called "Change of Plans" It details a problem and outlines a solution. When things don't go as planned it can lead to greater learning and growth. When you believe in yourself anything is possible.
