In this video tutorial, I replace the front coilover Rancho shocks on my 2014 GMC Sierra with a set of Bilstein 5100 series coilover shock absorbers. The process covered in this video will be the same on Chevy Silverados, Tahoe, Suburban, and many other vehicles. This video covers how to remove the existing front coil over shocks on a GMC Sierra. This video walks through the process of using a coil spring compressors to compress the heavy-duty coil springs. This video tutorial covers the process of removing the coil spring and all mounting hardware and installing it on the new Bilstein 5100 series replacement coil over shock absorber. Finally, this video covers how to install the newly assembled coilover shock on the front end of a 2014 GMC Sierra or 2014 Chevy Silverado. In this video, I demonstrate how to replace the front coil-over shocks, that some people refer to as struts, on a 2014 GMC Sierra. the process outlined in this video will be the same or similar on many other cars and trucks including Ford F150, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Pathfinder. and more.
The process covered in this video repair tutorial will be the same or similar on most vehicles including U.S. and Canadian models of:
2014 - 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
2014 - 2016 GMC Sierra 1500
2015 - 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500\3500

Thanks for such a great video, I just did this conversion on my 2016 Silverado 1500, I didn’t realize what you were talking about when you mentioned the orientation until I went to reinstall them and not only once but twice had the bottom mounting plate on the strut turned the wrong way. What you did in 12:25 minutes took me 5 hours, man, I’m a really poor mechanic lol

I've been through this process with a lesser than loaner Mcpherson strut compressor and ended up having to borrow a wall mounted one from a friends shop. Now I need to do the other side and he's out for a week. Do you know if this Shankly spring compressor will be strong enough to compress a rancho 4" lifted 2012 GMC sierra?
@06m50blue
@06m50blue 3 года назад
@@terryfenner8978 I think it would work just fine. I actually just got around to installing those leveling struts last week. It worked great. I greased the threaded rod before I started and it never ever seemed hard to turn at all. I read where some folks will also rent the cheap ones to have on there at the same time. But I felt pretty comfortable just using the Shankly tool.

I replaced my 2016 GMC 1500 all terrain front and rear schools with Bilsteins 4600. I didn’t have to release the sway bar link, just release and remove through the top. Then Bilsteins come with smaller replacement bolts for the front, they are smaller 15mm. They would not torque to 37lbs. I cleaned, wiped down, blew out and replaced my GMC originals (19mm). They worked great and torqued easily. FYI

Great video 👍👍 those spring compressor groove coil ring grabbers look a little weak in the video like they may break under tension. Are they stronger than they look in the video? I would really like a Wall Mounted strut compressor but those things are $700 for a quality one, cheaper versions on Amazon have broke ( coil grabbers ) under tension.

I've got a 2012 GMC sierra Z71 4X4 with a 4" rancho lift on it. I replaced a busted top mount on the drivers side last weekend and got myself into a pickle with the loaner McPherson strut compressor available at Oriely's. I basically got it apart and couldn't get it back together again with the tool available to me. I had a buddy let me use the wall mounted one at the shop he works at. I need to do the other side now (just discovered it failing last night) and my buddy is off this week so I don't have access to the spring compressor there. I saw your Shankly Spring Compressor Tool review on Amazon and thusly checked out your video here. How confident are you that the Shankly spring compressor will be able to compress the heavier sprung longer coils on my 4" lift? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The top cap of the upper mount on the strut (above the rubber grommet) sticks out pretty high above the upper mount plate on the vehicle when installed. Is this normal? Mark Jenkins What pads did you go with? OEM Also are these rotors Slotted & Drilled or just drilled or just slotted? Slots suck, they will eat/scrape pads up. Drilled hole are ok, IF they are surfaced beveled and the location of the holes not too close together, as being too close together will essentially act like a dotted line and crack from one hole to the next nearest hole.
@grantman64
@grantman64 2 года назад
I put Powerstop rotors/pads on my GMC truck several years ago. They were good, though I found the tabs on the pads needed some filing to fit in the calipers properly. I recently replaced the Powerstops with AC Delco Professional/GOLD series hardware and am VERY happy with them! No hitches during installation, either. BTW, instead of holes or slots, the AC Delco rotors have squiggly lines in the rotor surface. Braking is strong and smooth!

undo your upper ball joint and loosen your sway bar link and wont have an issue. make sure you use a lock nut on the top of the shaft. i installed these last year and just yesterday i had the center shaft on both go loose and the passenger side snapped. this is a common issue with these struts and provided hardware that the shaft nut likes to go loose.
