Mechanics-eye view of 5SFE Head Gasket replacement on a 1997-2001 Camry 4 cylinder.
This car had a blown head gasket that introduced exhaust gas into the cooling system and crankcase.
I show you how to replace the gasket in your own garage, including how to replace valve stem seals. Enjoy!

This video is so good that when I removed a nut or bolt, I put it on a piece of paper, circled it, and labeled it with the timing from the video. That way I had a reference point for context. There's enough little parts that I couldn't possibly have kept them straight. I'm really glad I used that trick so I thought I'd pass it on.

I just wanted to say thank you for making these 2 videos on the head gasket change for a Toyota Camry. I used your videos to successfully change the head gasket on my 1992 Camry (has the same 5S-FE motor). Most I had done in the past was an oil change or two. This made the head gasket job easy! Thanks again! You saved me a couple thousand dollars!

Super professional videos. Very impressive, Sir. Everything is explained step by step and the video quality is top notch. Am grateful for your efforts in producing this two part series, especially considering it's tough to find decent You Tube content related to exhaust manifold gasket and valve seal replacement for the 5sfe Toyota Camry. Am currently working on my late 90's model due to codes P1130 + P0171 and your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for taking the time to document your work in detail! A few really important things to know that he doesn't cover too well or at all in these videos: 1. Removing the camshaft in the right way - remove the cam bearings IN PASSES, not unlike how you'd take off the head bolts. Don't just take one bearing off all the way. That may bend you camshaft. 2. Remove your head bolts and re-apply them IN THE RIGHT ORDER or you will warp your head, forcing you to redo this entire job. Also remember to use new head bolts 3. Good sealing techniques - if you don't apply your seals the right way, that includes cam seals, valve stem seals, etc they will leak and you might as well not have done it at all. Look up how to do them correctly 4. Speaking of valve stem seals, you don't need a special tool for the valve keepers. Just a deep socket, vice grip pliers, and an extended magnet tool for removal, plus a piece of cardboard + vice grips + socket for installation 5. You might as well do your timing belt/water pump/crank seal at the same time, since they're right there. 6. Be sure to clean properly your mating surfaces between the head and block, and make sure they are smooth & TOTALLY FLAT down to 2/1000ths of an inch, minimum. Otherwise your head gasket will fail.

@ModMINI
@ModMINI 9 лет назад
MrZerocool5000 Read this: www.gobluedevil.com/blog/causes-blown-head-gasket/ Usually a blown head gasket is what causes a blown head gasket. (Failure of the gasket due to no other reason) Head gaskets also fail over time due to conditions within the engine, differential expansion of different alloys, corrosion, etc. Other causes are head warpage overheating / loss of coolant, or overboost situation that exceeds gasket limitations.

Excellent vid, thanks. I have a question: I have a '98 Camry that striped the timing belt. After striping, the motor turned over on the starter just fine. Toyota mechanics tell me that this is a clearance motor. However, now the motor locks solid when No. 1 & 4 pistons near TDC, and when pistons 2 & 3 near TDC. With the exhaust manifold off it appears that the exhaust valves are ok. Any suggestions? I don't want to pull the head off unnecisarily but it seems the only option as I'm miffed to what the problem might be??
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 9 лет назад
wetalegs Have you removed the timing cover and looked for anything stuck there? A stuck motor can be a major issue. If there is nothing stoping the motor from turning in the timing cover area, I'd definitely remove the head and look for anything unusual.

When you rotated the engine to get the bearing cap mark to align with the pulley. Do remember what degree it showed on the crank pulley. Because im showing right at the 15 degree mark. Or does that matter? I figured when the marks line up it would be at zero.

I came across this as I'm contemplating replacing the head on my 99 camry with a burned valve. The EGR system stuck open and fouled the valves after awhile. Of course the exhaust is usually the first one to go. It has 365k so I can't complain. However, it has a new sticker, and the body should be good until the sticker runs out. I hate to junk it when the rest of the car is perfectly serviceable.

Might just replace the entire engine. I suspect a higher mileage is pretty affordable and you'll get years more life out of the car.

Great video really helped me out with my 94. I do have a question, on the 94 2.2l the distributor is hooked up to the head. Do you have a step by step approach or a link that would recommend on how to remove (do I need to mark anything for timing, etc.)
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 9 лет назад
Brett Miller Make an alignment mark before removing, something that won't go away if you get solvent/cleaner on it. Maybe a pick to scratch a line in the aluminum across both the head and distributor. If the distributor is connected to a worm gear and starts to turn as you remove it, make a note of how much it turns; when you reinstall, start from that position. That should be it.

I don't see any rubber near where I am removing wires? Do you mean the crankcase breather hose (above the wires)? If so, check that it is leaking from there and if so, replace the hose.

good job, question. i have changed timing belt and after couple weeks my car start losing the cooling liquid, but there are no leaking. is that might be the head gasket need to be changed? thank u
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 7 лет назад
If it's not reaching the ground it is either evaporating off the side of the block, going out the tailpipe, or going into the crankcase. Inspect closely for signs of dried antifreeze. Absent that, you have a head gasket problem or cracked/warped head. If going out the tailpipe, it may but not always show white smoke, especially when cold. With engine not running, put 15PSI of pressure on the radiator cap with engine not running and look for seepage/drips. leave it like that with engine not running for a while, then start the engine; if it is leaking into combustion chamber you should get a pretty nice white plume of smoke on startup. Also check your engine oil of course. If it's leaking into crankcase you'll have a brown milkshake oil/coolant emulsion.

@ModMINI

+mkrp4 I guess I don't have that problem. In 15 years of wrenching, only 1-2 times have I forgotten a bolt or tool, both of those over 10 years ago. Must be a junior mechanic problem.

Hi, mini mod, I forgot to install the head bolt washers. Would I have to remove the head bolts again or is it okay as it is
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 8 лет назад
+Sky Blue I am not a mechanical engineer so I can't say for sure, but they are there for a reason, probably best to install them. A washer can be used to distribute force over a larger surface area or to reduce friction/binding/galling when tightening. If the size of the washer is almost the same size as the bolt head, probably OK as it would be more designed to ensure smooth slippage of bolt head against the aluminum, which tends to grab, but if the washer is more than a little bit bigger than the bolt head, you may be putting too much stress on too small a surface area.

I have a question, when you were turning the crank shaft for TDC does it matter if it’s on the exhaust or compression stroke ? Can I just set all the marks? Guy who made this video or anyone can answer thank u
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 5 лет назад
Exhaust or compression stroke of which piston. Don't bother answering that because it doesn't matter. The engine doesn't know what stroke it is on. That's decided by the ECU. Cam makes two revolutions for every crank revolution. So it doesn't matter as long as all the marks line up and crank is at the correct location.

@ModMINI
@ModMINI 7 лет назад
A few strategies. 1. Put bolts with the part they fasten. 2. Group bolts according to functional area 3. Brute force memory of remembering which bolt goes where, usually not that hard by knowing bolt length, material, head size or dirt pattern 4. Pictures 5. Cardboard cutouts I usually use 1, 2 and 3 and occasionally use 4 or 5 for really unfamiliar jobs such as transmission valve body.

so is blue devil a good product to use for a temporary fix? and how long does it usually last
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 8 лет назад
+Patrina Merola I tried this once recently on a supercharged car and failed. It actually stopped the leak when car was idling but would open up each time the car was driven. Each case will be different. For smaller leaks where water is leaking into oil or combustion chamber, there is a good chance it will work. It will not fix oil going into the water. It's worth a try - repair could last years depending on underlying damage.

Ive heard and seen some real horror stories about it clogging up everything so im a little apprehensive
@ModMINI

+Patrina Merola Blue Devil is a lot better than those metal based products. As long as your radiator and heater core are in good condition, (= you actually changed the coolant a couple times in the car's life) you'll be fine. If not, probably a good idea to stay away.

A lot of commenters say this video makes the hd gasket change easy, and I guess it does if you don't mind going deep into a tough DIY job. But there's soooo much shit that has to be removed on all 4 sides and the top of this engine just to get to the head, wouldn't it make more sense to pull the engine and take care of several other things too, like timing belt stuff and valve job, r&r the head, new gas filter, clean the injectors, etc. ya know? I can't see doing all this work in the video only to find out cyl 4 has low compression or the gas filter is clogged, or the timing belt needs change in 6 mos, or whatever. I do get that sometimes there's a money or time issue, but if not, why not go full tilt on this bad boy?

I admire the dedication. Definitely more work to remove entire engine. To do a full overhaul like that on a 20 year old Camry, in most cases you are better off replacing the entire car.

how many total hours did it take to remove the head ??? and did you just replace the head gasket ???
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 3 года назад
Takes a few hours to remove head. In this case it was just a blown gasket.

My car is trowing white smoked when I turn it on when it's cold only but when it get hot it doesn't throw no more smoked what could it be is it the head gasket?
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 5 лет назад
That's possible. Sometimes leaks go away when metal expands. It will get worse eventually.

You should have removed the valve cover earlier. It would have made removing some of the stuff behind the engine easier.

What caused the gasket to leak is it common on these engines??
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 3 года назад
Not sure if common on this engine, but typical causes for any engine are someone allowed engine to overheat (coolant loss), many hot/cold cycles, or design shortcomings.

Wow that isn't "Easy".. My valve cover gasket was replaced last year. I just replaced my thermostat and gauge .. My mechanic did. I have been having white smoke coming out of the tail pipe. One person said it could be my valves and pistons. I have had to ad more oil as well. I will have to find mechanics to help fix this as well..

Yes they are non interference. I've had two timing belts break in the 14 years of ownership and just slap a new belt on and keep going.

+Paul Howard Not lately... Either I have done the job a bunch of times or take notes/photos/place things in the order they are removed/look at how wires/tubes lay naturally/look at dirt patterns.
