Hi Hilton, thanks to you a month ago I finally bought an XF '10 and loving it :) A question re the video above - did you finally manage to fix the boot opening? I'm having the same issue in my car and wondering if rather than replacing springs I should go straight for the gas struts. Cheers!
MrCombic Congrats on your purchase. I'm not surprised you're loving it. I gave up on the trunk auto open because fitting a spoiler has made it impossible. But you are onto the right track, my hunch is worn struts cause it not to open fully. After checking the old springs, there was nothing wrong with them, so they weren't at fault. Happy motoring!
Hi Hilton. Finally the struts arrived this morning and after 5 minutes of easy installation all has been replaced and now the boot is working as desired. I think that the struts have so much power now that they could easily lift your carbon fiber spoiler. The replacement cost is around £20 so may be wort to try it.
MrCombic Hey that's excellent news. Now I must just get new ones too and hopefully mine will work with the spoiler because its fairly light being carbon fiber ;-)
I heard some people from forums that all they did is put some oil or lubrication to the gas struts and it will open the boot fully when unlocked. There's also a video about it here in RU-vid
My 12 XF pops the trunk unlocked but does not open the trunk automatically. Thought this was normal though. It is suppose to open the trunk completly open when pushing the trunk botton?
Howard Hughes the 2nd They are supposed to pop the lid open, hence the little springs, but worn struts can also cause it. After fitting the spoiler, I gave up LoL
jrw1825 I ordered them from the dealer for about 10 pounds. My cars issue is actually worn gas struts so I will be doing a video in the near future on how to replace em.
Hey Joe - after doing some more research, it seems some of the comments below are correct. It's not the springs at fault, its the struts. The factory struts have 375nm of ejection force and the forums spoke of a company in the UK that makes these exact struts with an ejection force of 425nm - but after trawling the web, I haven't been able to find them or anyone on the net who can make them at 425nm. Thing is, any stronger and they could damage the hinges on the trunk.
Hi Hilton, I ended up replacing the struts and adding those spacers per that thread. Both things together solved the problem, now it works perfectly. One or the other on their own did not work. I got the replacement struts from Rock Auto.
Thanks so much Joe, I'm going to give this a go and see if I can get mine to work properly. I've saved the thread you linked here to favorites so that I can reference it again. Thanks again ;-)
