How to Replace Porsche Brake Pads (Cayman, Boxster, 997 Carrera) - Basic Maintenance DIY

In this Basic Maintenance video, we'll go over replacing your Porsche brake pads. You should inspect your brake pads about every 10,000 miles, and replace them if the material lining of the pad is worn down enough to trigger the pad replacement sensor. Follow this guide so that you’ll have the confidence to do it yourself. This particular video can be used for 2006-2012 Porsche Caymans, 2005-2012 Boxsters and 2005-2012 997 Carreras.

A very helpful video with one important omission. The sensor wire for the left side caliper is shorter than the wire for the right side caliper. The part numbers differ by one digit, but there is no indication that this means they are for different sides. The sensor with the shorter wire goes on the caliper on the American driver's side. There's a 50/50 chance you did it right without realizing there is a difference. I had bad luck, so I learned something. You got to be philosophical about this. On second thought, designing it that way was f*#+ing stupid. And it costs more to stock two different parts when one would be enough.

Very good instruction. Some say the rotors should routinely be replaced with pads. How do most feel about that? Is it really necessary?

If the rotors are not vibrating and measure within spec, you can reuse them.

Yeah, but what about the rear brake pad dampers? Those are much different, from what I've read. How do you line those up?

The rear dampers press into the piston, they are much easier to work with.

This is only the front brakes right? You don't need the vibration dampers for the rear? Also, can the brake pad sensors be reused?

Front and rear are similar, you can use this for both.

so with aftermarket pads have a shim attached to them. I use that in junction with the oem pad dampers?

Check with the pad manufacturer. Most times, you want to use a pad similar to the OE.

What about turning the rotors for a nice smooth surface?

Most rotors today are soft and wear along with the pads. So if they are smooth and no vibrations, you can reuse. If they require machining, it is best to replace.

No, 991 models use a single pin to retain the parts.

All you need for Porsche brake pads are a flathead screwdriver a 13mm socket or wrench or pliers for the cutter pin or the 13 mm screw push back pistons pull pads drop in new ones replace sensors and presto

I've never tried on a Porsche but on my BMWs I spliced the sensor wires together and tricked the sensor. I switch pads well before their expiration just to control brake dust, not because I have to be reminded that the metal grinding sound is my brakes going out.

I would never take my car to a Porsche dealer to do pads , just buy all the quality parts and do your self it really is easy , and once you have done it once it gets easier, all the brembo systems are similar on Porsches, sometimes the retaining pin can be hard to get out but it will come , helps to sand it up before putting back in with a little bit of copper grease, you alway have the satisfaction of doing it yourself and you can examine other bushes when wheels are off ...
