How to Replace Porsche Cayenne Spark Plugs

Replacing spark plugs on most cars is a fairly easy and quick job. Replacing them on a 2005 Porsche Cayenne S is a different matter. Simply getting all the spark plugs uncovered is a process that can take about an hour and it requires a couple special sockets that the average mechanic probably does not own. This is one of the main reasons Porsches are so expensive to maintain. They often require special tools and what are usually some of the easiest maintenance projects, are made far more complicated and time consuming.

The torque arm specialty bolts are called a triple square if you want that type of socket bit. Thanks for including the torque specs

On these old Porsche 955 V8's, while you are pulling the plugs, it is an extremely good idea to check for bore scoring (known issue on the 4.5 V8's) with a handheld digital endoscope. Vevor makes a very good $60 (Amazon) endoscope Model #451P, great for checking engine cylinders and has many other uses as well. Well worth the time and money.

I recently changed my valve cover gaskets. What a PITA... While I was in there, I changed the spark plugs that I installed last year. I was shocked to find two of the eight plugs were loose! This time I went back two months later and re-torqued everything including the plugs. Found that one of the plugs was about two ft lbs under-torque. Hmmm Wondering if I need a better torque wrench? Cheers!

I swear the Cayenne might the hardest car I have worked on. I have a Porsche 928 and I think the Cayenne might be worse, only because it has so much more electronics and electrical components.

Besides making the engine look pretty and make it difficult to do your own car maintenance, why does Porsche put all that plastic in the engine compartment?

That will depend on who you ask but the plastic covers do have some positive functions. Two easy examples of pros are: it helps keep the engine compartment cleaner and the plastic acts as a sound barrier so the car is a little quieter. It can also be used to help direct air flow for cooling purposes, which on sports cars, it's probably legitimate. On the other hand, plastic covers can prevent air flow and cause heat to be trapped, so it really depends on the engineering of the specific car. Some people argue the covers are there to make work on the car more difficult to dissuade DIYers, like me, from working on their own cars. Plus, since it takes time to remove the covers, it definitely adds to the bill if you take your car to a mechanics shop.

@@thediygrunt Thank you. I guess with the right tools and patience anybody can learn to do basic maintenance on their own vehicle. I miss cars that didn't have all the sensors.
