This is a basic video guide showing how to remove a motor and fit a new one into a DC04 Vacuum Cleaner.This video was originally split into 2 but since we can upload longer videos now I have joined them again to show a complete repair start to finish. This repair should only be done by suitable skilled or qualified persons. The motor used in this video is part number MO44
www.vacuumspot....
We do also have the cheaper Chinese made motors part number MO49 but where ever possible I would rather install the better quality motor.

Thank you. Couldn't have fitted a new motor to our old dc04 without this video.

Thank you Alec - this video is still providing help some 12 years later. My motor didn't have the rubber locator, instead it had a metal 3 legged cap which was a bit of a challenge to put back with the motor. 👍

This is a really exceptionally good how-to video! Very well presented, and good visibility of what you're doing. I checked other videos before replacing my burnt out motor, but this is the one I finally used to help me strip and rebuild it, and now I have a working DC04 again. Superb! 😀 I should mention that I had to keep coming back to this video several times because there are so many tricky bits to get just right. So good to see in the video when it goes wrong too because putting the top front shell back on went wrong for me too and I had to come back and have another look and then have another go. Having these videos available is such a fantastic resource for home DIYers, far better than just an exploded diagram which doesn't actually show you how to put it together or take it apart.

Alec - just wanted to say thank you very much for virtually holding my hand doing this job, I could never have done it without you! One thing I would say for anyone else taking this task on, is that it goes back together a lot easier than it comes apart!

Hahahahaha! Yes, Dysons I think were only ever meant to be put together. Taking them apart is a significant skill (if you want to avoid smashing up bits of plastic, especially when they get old and brittle!). I got hold of a cheap donor DC04 to refurbish mine, and when I went to remove things like the clips that hold the dust bucket onto the cyclone section, the donor cyclone pip that holds the clip on just shattered - I got a good clip and it clicked onto my machine very easily, it's the removal that gives you a dodgy heartbeat if you're trying to save both parts you're trying to separate. Fortunately I didn't care that I was trashing the donor cyclone, it's possible I'd have been more careful if it had been important, but it took me by surprise how easily it completely destroyed itself :o)

A DC04 taken to technician found "burnt motor" given to me for "second opinion" found Thermal fuse burnt. With this marvelous help I found my way for getting over the repair hazard. Many thanks, David

Thank you so much Alec. This video was amazing and you were fantastic with your instructions. I've never changed a motor before and was nearly about to pay £70 to do so but this video was right on the money. Excellent, thank you.

Goodonya Alec, thanks for the video. I had already bought a new motor, but was struggling getting the vac back together. When I found your clear, step-by-step instructions, I finished the job in 20 mins. Next time I need spares I will be in touch.

Do you know, every time I reassemble my Dyson I end up doing it in the wrong order and having to take bits apart again. What a marvellous video! I will certainly be watching this when I fit the 'new' motor I've ordered on ebay. I will be using my fingers, but it must be handy to have a belt lifter.
@GigglingGobby

If you replace the clutch belts, which is a cheap job but very fiddly, get ready for some serious muscleage putting it back together, HAHAHAHA my old belts were TWICE the size of the new ones due to stretching - at one stage I thought I'd been sent the wrong belts, but then they'd been in use for goodness knows how many years, probably since the early days of the DC04 because we bought ours not long after they were launched and I haven't done the belts until now 2023 :o)

Recently our motor seems to scream more like a jet engine. Is this signifying the end is near?

Great video - quick question though: At 09:20 the motor you removed had its wires connected incorrectly (red to blue and blue to red)? Any reason for that... When you replaced the new motor you correctly placed the wires blue to blue, red to red.

Hi There, yes that tool is worth it in the amount of money you will save in band aids and lost skin.

Honestly it shouldn't matter too much as long as you mean in the body. If you use some kind of bonding agent to stop it getting worse you should be fine. If you mean there is somehow a crack in the motor or the motor supports then no I wouldn't use it until you replace the component that is cracked.
