How to replace the motor in a Dyson DC40! 

Thank you so much. When I wasn't laughing I was able to follow this video and utilise the motor from a previous scrap dyson with no brush role power. Dog is so pleased not to have to exit to the garden everytime we clean.

Many thanks for making this video. I spent £100 on a new Vax because my 9 year old DC40 sounded like a banshee when it was turned off spooling down and I figured it best to replace it. From new the Vax was a poor replacement and after 4 months (hadn't taken the DC40 to the tip yet) really fed up with the Vax. Immediately after using the Vax I ran the DC40 over exactly the same 3 carpets and it extracted 1/3 of the container that the Vax left behind! Took the Vax back to Lidl (thanks Lidl for the full refund) and, thanks to your great and humorous video, had the confidence (shaky at times) to remove the old motor. My new one, an identical new OEM, arrives tomorrow with filters and another broken part and my reassembly is expected to be triumphant, given the myriad of dismantling photos & videos I took for reference. All for less than my refund. Thanks a million.

I can see why many DC40's end up in landfill, as repairing one looks so complex. Well done for successfully changing out the Motor on this very complex vacuum 🤜🤛😁

Bought a DC40 down the local dump shop. £15. Actually , a dyson rep said, DC40s are more powerful than the newer Dysons because they were not under the recent power regulations of the EU. DC40s still are worth their money even for second hand, though finding one for £15 working will be a hard thing to do. Yesterday the DC40 stopped working. Thought it was the motor, and it was. Thank you to this video as I haddn't gone as far as the motor. Well, no new motor needed. We had just moved into a house and had a total rewire, this means plaster dust, well you guessed it, the motor was covered in this dust on the inside. No contact being made where needed I guess, managed to get the dust away from the copper coil, now it works again. As mentoined. DC40s have more power than the newer models and are worth having. They are still worth about £200 tbh. Even the dyson rep said it was better than the newer ones.

In regards to the white hub, if you dont put the side with the clamp on first, and put the screws i. The hub first, it really helps line it up first time, the the screw that holds the gears in, if you loosen that , it gives more play to mesh the gears

Thanks so much for this video. This was my first appliance home repair, and it would have been impossible without your help. It feels a little looser but it works! Also, the motor I got off eBay had no loom, instead it had two points and a blue box in the side. I had to (guess) what attached and how, knowing very little about wiring and electronics. But it works and has saved us a fortune for now!

Hey! Thank you so much for making this video. This helped me teardown a UP24(UK Ball Animal 2) which has a ball design almost identical to the DC40. This helped me convert my imported UP24 to 120V so it can be used here in the US. I was also able to install a 120V version of the motor you used, so it should have better suction than it did stock

Refurbished my up32 today, The motor in that is smaller so you do not need to remove a carbon brush. it is the same as that bar a few differences. like the brush roll connector. an easy way to assemble the release mechanism is by slightly unscrewing the clear cog, fully reclining the machine (with the screws out from the white half moon) line up the cog with the cog so the bottom of the clear cog corresponds with the other main cog, once it does snap the duct for the brush roll back on, see if it rotates if it does tighten the cog screw.

Wow that takes a lot of work to replace it hope my sisters motor doesn’t go bad because I won’t look forward to trying to replace it

Great stuff - my motor had just stopped working and followed your video to dismantle it. New motor for 16 quid and all back together again after a very frustrating reassembly lol. 4 screws left over for some reason 3 silver and one black..(!) no idea what I missed.. (edit: Maybe 14:40 or 17:20; that's the problem with getting frustrated with it and doing bits over the course of a few days). Anyway all working again. Getting those white & black wires in for the brush motor was a nightmare though - kept them in place with some insulation tape whilst trying to keep the grey cover over the black guide.. One thing I did notice is that once it was in bits, I could have fixed the motor.. Where the brush was/had been removed, the 90 degree (power) tag had snapped off - it was a refurb from dyson so suspect they broke it during refurb and it was just touching. Anyway a bit of soldering would fix it.. worth checking before buying a replacement.

Really helpful and enjoyable video, thank you for posting. When you say in the comments that this process works for the ERP model, how much difference is there please? I've got a few that require motors, and a fairly large amount of spare motors to use. The only thing I found slightly confusing is that you did not completely remove the lower internal hose, because unlike the 41, the 40s simply unclips. Once again, thank you for the video, I am glad someone had the patience to work out the ins and outs of changing the motor in one of these. Regards Bill

wonderful video… my machine is indeed working a little better now.. i went a bit too far, and tried to disassemble the little plastic doubleclip that helps route and protect the wires out to the floor sweeper assembly motor. The two halves of the doubleclip are (were) held together by a little plastic pin that is (was) about a half millimeter in diameter. It broke off during reassembly. I found that I could repair the plastic clip (repair the broken plastic pin) by torching a sewing pin red hot, inserting it in the plastic where the old pin was, and nipping it to length.

Glad to see you got the thing back together, just a little surprised you didn’t bother to clean the internal hose since they crack quickly when dirty like that. I cringe at tossing all those screws in and cross threading them.

Spot on video, knowing which screws and tabs to remove and in which order made the job much easier, still rather fiddly though. Maybe Dysons are put together by people with very small hands :-) 16 quid for a motor from Ebay and jobs a gooden. My vacuum no longer sounds like a chainsaw. Can someone help me with replacing the white clip at 14:28. I accidentally unscrewed the wrong screw then this bloody bit fell off ant don’t know how to reposition it there is also a small spring.

Hi, good video, there's a bodge if the woooooooo sound bothers you.... remove the post motor filter and cut off the rubber seal on the mount.

Where do you buy filters?

Excellent video, BUT, please go a bit slower, you have done it many times, this was my first time and I had to keep rewinding to catch up with you. However, all was well in the end, despite refitting the wheel assy the wrong way round first time, and wondering why the next piece would not fit. Well done!!
