It's a tight fit, but I made it work! Here's how to replace your thermostat on a MK4 Volkswagen. The Golf and Jetta will be much easier!
PLEASE NOTE. If you look carefully in the video...at 2:22 I put the new thermostat in BACKWARDS... and that's probably why the o-ring didn't sit properly... Whoops!!!

Just came from watching a video where a guy was replacing the thermostat on an '08. He did it the "easy" way and didn't remove the entire front clip, headlights and fenders. Just the intake manifold, half dozen hoses, connectors, etc. Still, a LOT more work than this. Glad I have a 2015 with this engine. Great video. Thanks!

Just got my first Xterra! I hope to one day make it like yours! I just ordered a roof rack, leveling kit, 20 inch light bar for my bumper, a wiring harness for the light bar, and rear taillight guards! And I ordered the same Window deflector things that you put on in one of your videos!

I just replaced mine. The easiest way, believe it or not, is to remove the whole front assmbly to get to those two screws. the radiators and the front assembly are only linked by 2 or 3 hoses and a few connectors. You have to remove the bumper cover and the assembly comes out with five 13mm screws. Replacing the thermostat is 10 minutes after that. Way easier than trying to fish those screws.

Be careful with the AC hoses, though. I held the front assembly in place with a couple tie wraps.

You put the new thermostat in backwards. I'm guessing you fixed that the second time around? That's probably why the o-ring didn't fit properly and got cut.

Racking my brain on this... if you look closely at the thermostat, it's taller on the spring side. so that's probably why the thing was leaking so bad. The thermostat housing wasn't able to seat fully on the engine because there's not enough clearance for the spring side of the thermostat. Whoops. O-ring might have been okay after all.. except it might have been pinched a little from the housing being on at a weird angle. Thanks again for pointing that out. Learning.

That's probably what caused it. Although I think the spring would have compressed in the housing and stuck open. Hopefully the thermostat isn't bent up.

@@EthanCommins888 If it's stuck open, the car would never hit operating temperature, right? It heats up fine. It peaks at 209 and then the secondary fans kick in and then it goes back down to 202. It operates happily in between those ranges.

I’m not a mechanic. I imagine a shop would charge you at least an hour of labor plus parts.

Haha I did. That’s why it leaked the first time. I flipped it over and then it was good.

You installed the thermostat backwards. Unless you corrected that it's probably going to have overheating issues.

Yup! That's actually the real reason why the car leaked all over the place when I started it up the first time. It wasn't the o-ring's fault. The new thermostat housing didn't seat all the way with the thermostat in backwards. Haha.

Haha. Ya. I actually didn't catch that I put it in backwards until after I had already edited and posted the video, but it made sense after the fact. I remembered having a hard time getting the housing to sit flush the first time around. I had hoped that it would seal when I torqued it down, but no dice. And then someone else mentioned it so I double checked the video and noticed that it went in the first time backwards. Car runs good now and the T-stat opens when it's supposed to, so I'm assuming I put it in the right way the second time around. lol.

Yes. I know. That's why the housing didn't seal properly and everything spewed out. I get lazy and sometimes don't finish editing these videos until a year after shooting the video.. and by the time I do the voiceover, I forget things. haha. But it's fun seeing who else notices and mentions it in the comments.
