I swapped a MK4 Volkswagen water pump with zero experience and DIDN'T blow up my car!
DISCLAIMER! I have NO IDEA what I'm doing. Do your own waterpump and timing belt at your own risk. I will not be responsible if you blow up your engine. I might have just gotten lucky. 😂
Watch and Read to Prep for this project

Pretty good video and he pretty much covered what i did when i replaced my timing belt water pump kit several times already. here are a few tips he didn't cover; remove the fuel pump fuse, open gas tank cap, remove the transmission peep hole, crank the motor over a few times to release pressure off the fuel lines. Then you can turn the crank slowly manually until you see the timing marks on the transmission fly wheel through the peep hole. Marking the belt like he did was perfect and you won't blow up the engine if you put the same marks on the new belt including the arrow on top. Tip; hold the new belt to the cam sprocket at the top with a pair of vice grips using tape on the vice grips so you don't damage the belt and makes it easy to install at the bottom. IMO; you don't have to replace the motor mount bolts you can use the same ones if you know how to torque them, In other words don't stretch the same bolt again a 2nd time just torque it to specs using blue loc-tite and leave alone. In other words ( if the instructions say to torque a bolt to 30 ftbs and then an extra 90 degrees well that's when you stretch it and that's okay if it's a brand new bolt but that same bolt can be used again just don't stretch it again, just torque it to 30ftbs with blue loc-tite and leave alone.) hope this helps folks.

Thanks for the additional insight! This was my first time trying this on ANY car and I was stressed out the entire week. I took my time. Just glad I didn't blow anything up!

You can relieve a lot of stress by turning the engine over a couple of times by hand checking that the cam timing marks line up every time you turn the crank through two revolutions. As a seasoned mechanic, I find it difficult to believe that you're an amateur. Great job!

I have the same car with the same problem, watched many of the videos posted, yours is by far the most informative! Thanks for posting. I think now I will have enough knowledge to tackle the job. Really did enjoy your outlook on tackling the job, you really did sell yourself short, you are a great mechanic, keep up the good attitude! May God bless you and your family!

Good job, you did a thorough enough video that should help anyone through the tough spots. Finding that broken pump impeller answered your overheating questions! I'm an experienced mechanic but not a VW guy and I have the same car you have in red and need to do the same chore. Glad to let you show us those swear zones without skipping through so we know what to watch out for. Thanks!

Omg this is so thorough! I love it! Instant sub my dude. I've got a 1.8T Beetle myself that had some tuning done by the previous owner (who is incidentally also the car-dealer), so it goes pretty good already, and is well taken care of, but still, I'd love to know all the small details about my little dub. This channel really scratches that itch.
@rayregnogarage
@rayregnogarage 3 года назад
Oh man. I sure hope not. Haha. It pretty much only goes on one way. Some pullies are flat and the flat side of the belt travels on them and other pullies have grooves and the grooved side of the belt travels on them.

@@rayregnogarage Aaah you were so fast with reacting man, nice :) Already edited my original comment.. Yeah I went back and checked what the belt looked like when you pulled it off, and it looks like it's grooved on the in- and outside.. My bad..

Tip to not have fuel spray open the gas tank and take out fuel pump fuse and start the car let it idle until it dies it releases all the pressure out of the lines ONLY for gas engines

Nice work. I just had a shop do my timing belt kit a few weeks ago while getting other repairs done. It's probably the 4th time I've had it done on my 1.8t 20v Jetta that now has 211K miles. It's a fun car but it's really breaking my bank having to pay for all this labor and repairs.

How much did they charge you for timing belt and pump?
@BOOSTEDDUDE
@BOOSTEDDUDE 4 месяца назад
They had my engine out of the car doing the head so not sure how much the timing belt kit and pump party & labor were. But a timing belt kit and water pump install on a 1.8t is probably about 1K. I would have to check some older records to see what I paid in t the past. @@mcUSA94

Thank you so much for your wisdom on these cars. Luckily I bought mine after it had its timing belt change done, don't know if the water pump is plastic though so its a bit scary. Also, keep an eye out for those coolant flanges since they are plastic. I was looking if the aftermarket had some metal ones and they do exist but not for the New Beetle. Looking forward to changing them soon. If you ever find some metal ones for the Beetle please let us know, I would be running out to get them no matter the price. Again, thank you so much for the content!
