How To Replace Turn Signal Wiper Stalk & Cruise Switch GM Car & Truck 1989 K5 Chevy Blazer

It is a little tricky, but not impossible with a little finesse and patience snaking the wire down the column. How to repair, install, fix, change or replace a broken, damaged, faded, worn or faulty turn signal stalk, high beam and wiper switch. Covers most GM cars and trucks or similar 1983-1991..

Here it is 2020 I had that new stalk in the trunk of my 89’ caprice discouraged because I couldn’t find the connection under the dash. WELL yesterday I decided to tug on the wire till I found it. New stalk is installed , old stalk is in a garbage truck or dump & wipers are working great I followed you wiper motor video and it lead me to your stalk video . And you saved me time grief & most of all $$$$

I was feeling all of the frustration right there with you. I have to do this same job on my 94 Olds Ciera. I will use mechanics wire when I do it. Many thanks for sharing your experience and frustration that it's never as easy as it looks, and expressing it is something we're all gonna do. I just spent the last 10 months troubleshooting an engine that was perfectly ok, it was a low output fuel pump that was the culprit all along.

Thanks for the tip. I just replaced the stalk on my 89 Astrovan. I could not for the life of me get that wire through. The old one was cut and everything seemed to work other then the wipers would activate randomly or when I used the turn signals. So I cut the wire off the new stalk and everything works perfect including intermittent and the wipers no longer randomly come on. The old stalk was cracked pretty badly so I figured that was the issue. So all that said, I believe that stupid wire is actually for cruise control which never worked and I never wanted to use anyhow so it saved me a headache for sure. If not for trying to get the wire through this is a 2 minute job. Pull old one off, push new one on. Done. I destroyed the new wire trying to get it through using the old wire as a snake since it was cut anyhow from the last owner. Then the connector broke off inside and prevented right turn signal from working because it was blocking the movement so I had to dig it out with a pick tool. What a PITA! If I had known before hand that was a cruise control wire I would have cut it from the get go, ripped the old original cut one out, and been done in minutes. To note I did at first try all your suggestions. I removed the plastic guide, tried different tilt positions and turn signal positions but there was no way on gods green earth that wire was getting through. I guess the Astro is a different beast from a K5. I should mention although the Astro is no where as cool as a K5 I do have this van lifted with really killer off road rims and oversize tires. Painted it all white with flat black trim. I get more stares and compliments then a Lambo and everyone asks if I am selling it. Hell no. That ones a keeper. But as with all older GM's.. it is needing constant every little thing repaired. But the expensive stuff like the engine and tranny.. bulletproof.

Are you sure? That appears to be the only electronic connection. How would the wipers get user input?
@tyler2610
@tyler2610 6 лет назад
He's right. I replaced my stalk as well and the wipers and turn signals work without connecting the wire. The wire is only for the cruise module. The wipers are controlled by the switch in the column by rotating it. I am currently going to have to replace my stalk again and possibly the switch as well. I was attempting to make a tighter connection between the chrome end piece and the stalk becasue they kept separating, creating a small space between the two. Everything worked perfectly I just wanted it to fit flush like it is supposed to. Well after making a washer out of tin foil and fitting it on the end of the chrome piece, it fit tightly but when I rotated the stalk to change the wiper speed it didn't work very smoothly and then when I rotated it back it just spun loosely and won't shut the wipers off. Apparently there is a small groove in the switch that a raised area of the stalk fits into that makes it rotate. I am hoping I can get the switch to rotate back to the off position and work again (hopefully I didn't break the groove out). My stalk will still fit into the switch at the correct orientation and engage the washer fluid when I move it up, but when I rotate it down it doesn't change the speed of the wipers ad won't shut them off. It is nice though to see a video that goes the way things always go for me. I watch these videos and everything seems to go perfect and done in 20 mins and I think I can do that. And then life happens!
@josephpuchel6497
@josephpuchel6497 6 лет назад
Wiper Switch yes the two wires coming out of multi function lever are only for cruise. I have the wipers intermittently coming on without touching or switching the lever. The wiper switch is the round plastic piece which controls turn signals ? I changed out the control module and the didn’t work. I’m thinking something grounding out on switch.

So for my 1993 Yukon switch that was ripped off at the switch, prior to me buying it. . Here is the way i have soldered it back on luckily the blue and red were still showin slightly on the soldered pins which color was which. So with the electrical switch, the broken soldered wires being up and the 4 terminals facing right here is the sequence. : Blue - top Red Green Yellow- bottom I soldered wire stubs on the pins - go with 4-5 “ of wire. Then i soldered the wires to the wires sticking out the steering column. Hope this helps someone else as time goes on.
