Thanks for posting this, A1. I recently replaced the drivers' side regulator on my '04 Marauder, and this video was extremely helpful. Since the specific sizes weren't mentioned, I used 1/4-20 x 3/4 inch stainless screws for the door related parts, and 1/4-20 x 1 inch for the window. I also used a piece of 5/4" deck board cut to 17" in length to position under the window when the old regulator was in place, which helped make it easier to hold in place while knocking out the rivets.
Replaced the drivers side window regulator on my 98 Ford Crown Victoria in 1.5 hours with these easy to follow instructions! Used (2) 1/4'' - 20 x 1'' round head combo machine screws for the window and 1/4'' - 20 x 5/8'' round head combo machine screws for the rest. 1/4'' - 20 Nylon Lock Nuts and 1/4'' x 1 1/4'' Fender Washers secured everything. Lubed up the channels with spray silicone and lubed up the regulator with white lithium grease. Thank you 1AAuto for your help!
Great instructive video. I had to get my “08” Grand Marquis back from my Caregiver. Sadly, I’ve got to do allot of repairs to make that car Nice again! And the L.F. Regulator is now bad. I’ve done these over the years. But, I have a brain injury that’s progressing. And you’d be surprised the SIMPLE things that just aren’t there anymore… So, Thank you for the refresher:-)
I loved this video. I had to change mine out in a Mercury and this video was what I needed. Really not that hard( with a little patience). I also bought the part from these people and the price was good and it shipped fast..Will do business with them again.
Non handyman here, but thanks to your instructions I was able to get inside and at least "work" the window all the way up (and at this point I'll leave it that way). Thanks for posting this video.
I'm 21, and while my dads a mechanic, I have absolutely no mechanical knowledge beyond tinkering with my guitar. This video was super helpful as a dude with no mechanical knowledge! Thank you!
This thing fought me tooth and nail from start to finish, but I finally got the old one out and the new one in. I feel like wearing the old regulator around my neck like a trophy of my slain enemy, a worthy foe. Also a short poem to the Ford Motor company...ahem: Roses are red. Violets are blue. Ford why the hell do you put rivets in your damn window regulators. 🤬
Bought my Regulator from 1AAuto due to this video. Thank you!! Only main issues I had was getting window back in the track. Mostly hand position and movement. and then It wasn't smooth. Loosened bottom bolts, loosened 11mm nuts, loosened window. Ran it up and down a few times. and then re-tightened in reverse order and everything is awesome. Minus me scratching my tint. whoops. While I had my door apart, I fixed the power door lock, the mount rivet broke long ago. It was tricky to get the nut on the inside and Philips head on the outside.. but I managed... LOL Thanks again!!!
Hey, if at least one thing doesn't go wrong you start to wonder if you're even doing it right. Glad it all worked out for you in the end. Thanks for watching! 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
Outstanding video -- exactly what I needed to see. ... This gives me a whole new respect for the techs/mechanics who do this for a living. It also makes me feel better (a little, anyway) about the cost of having repairs done at the local service shop or dealer. ... My 2003 Marquis (in my family since it was new on the showroom floor) needs this particular window repair done -- for the third time in 12-plus years and 109,000 miles of good service. ... Must be a basic design flaw with this car/model. ... Thanks for posting this video, which is the best how-to video I've seen. (May 13, 2015)
Great video, very informative. Procedure is a LITTLE bit different on my 2006 Grand Marquis but the basics are the same. Was worried a bit about striking out the two rivet pins that hold the window glass but everything went smoothly. Just be sure the punch is lined up to drive straight in and through, if you angle the punch sideways at all you're wasting your striking energy. Check after every hit to make sure you're still centered. Most of the rivets spun while drilling them out, I used pliers on the backside rivet strands to keep it still, or drilled until it spun and then hit the top of them with a chisel, they popped right out. Was able to re-use my original motor, as it was just the wire that jumped track on its spindle and got messed up. On my 06 the glass MUST come out in order to pull back the top of the regulator and clear the two threaded posts away from the door. When removing the glass, push the front end down first, then angle it to come out the INSIDE of the window frame, not the outside. When replacing the glass, I draped a microfiber cloth over the door and down over the top of the regulator, so I wouldn't scratch the tinted glass during replacement. Also had to remove the three rivets on the door handle plate (the door rod connects to it) so I could get to the rivet holding the glass, closest to the front of the car. Used half-inch long bolts for everything but the glass, that took 1" long bolts, nylock nuts on all of them. Hope that all made sense. Not too terribly difficult to complete, but I hope I don't need to do it again anytime soon. Thanks for the video, it really did help by giving me an idea of exactly whats inside there.
This video is excellent. Just replaced a regulator in a '97 Crown Vic in no time at all because there was no guesswork. Just like having a mechanical mentor! Top notch job my sincere thanks to the folks a 1AAuto!
Thanks for the great video!!! My radio was stolen, broken glass, and you showed how to replace the window so clearly, thanks so much! Would've been stumped with the rivets without your tip on drilling them out. Thanks!!!!
Ok I got my power window regulator for the front pass and drivers windows from 1A Auto. Followed the video. I was dreading the job but everything went great. The video was very helpful. The whole thing took about 3 hrs for both windows. I am very happy and saved over $600 by doing it myself. Thanks 1A Auto

Thank you again, I since finish the job, no sooner got it fix's, when the back one went out. I was able to put what I learned from your video, to do the back window. This week, I had to do a 77 camaro driver side door for my girlfriend. It was easy...Thank you again. Bobby
Normally replacing the entire window regulator would be the way to go. Attempting to just replace the cables can become increasingly time consuming if you have not done them before as well as sourcing new parts can be difficult.
This video was awesome!!! The only issue I had was how tight the window was going back in until it got into the tracks. It seemed 'stuck'. Otherwise I couldn't imagine better instructions, and the job was done in 90 minutes. Thanks again for a great video!!!
I love your video here, I watched it over and over for new ideas, insights & inspiration. I know I could not have changed out the regulator without it. I got an aftermarket replacement regulator and had to partly bend it to fit right. That was after the first regulator failed right after installing. 2 comments. Personally, I'd recommend that all the fasteners be installed a tad bit loosely and before snugging them up, do a quick test of the windows up/down operation to see if any binds or such are there. Then, tighten up all the nuts/bolts. comment 2, the introduction is so exceedingly loud compared to the rest of the video. Is there some way to set the volume to the same level throughout. But truely, overall, a really fantastic video! Thank you for doing it, an the others too . DL
Extremely helpful video! The steel cable in my window regulator broke in half. This video allowed me to put the window up manually and leave it in place with pvc piping. Thanks!

Just fixed my window. Thanks so much for the video. I just ordered the power door lock actuator from you for my next project...for which you have already kindly posted a video
I have to put on of these in the passenger side door of my Mercury grand marquis, this was very helpful, wish me luck, I'm going to use pop rivets instead of bolts
Great video details step by step!! however I also have an issues with Grand Marquis 2001 with my voltage battery gauge reading very low but alternator was fine and working and tested. battery is fully charged also.. what could that be may I ask?
It could be. You may want to take the door panel off and inspect the window regulator to see if it's working properly. Also take a look at the window motor.
Great !!!!...Cold here in Kent Ohio. I have to do some work on my 96 Crown Vic. I am sure glad I saw you first..Thank you !.......................Bobby
thanks for the video. Could I swap harnesses say front to rear , if its a switch issue, and be able to use the front again?. I relealize the rear will now not work but I need the front more. Temporary solution?
Wow. Thanks for the video. Thanks for great prices on parts. Stuff like this is great for when you have to work on a Ford.....built Ford tough to work on. Geez. Rivets? Fire the bean counters!
This is a question for the guy who changed the regulator. I have a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis LS that my Dad left to me in his will. The driver side window quit working. Do you think that this video will be a sufficient for changing the regulator in a 2004?

I just did this today. Use 1/4 inch fasteners. I used 2 1/4 inch rivets for the bottom 2 holes on the regulator, and 2 1/4 inch x 1 inch fasteners with lock nuts on the window, as my rivets were too short. Hope this helps!
I have begun to replace the window regulator and when I drilled one of the rivets out of the window the white round plastic piece where the rivet was located broke. The window is not damaged...I was wondering what that piece is called and if you carry that part?
We currently do not have an auto repair video that shows this particular repair on a 1991 Crown Vic. We'll keep this request in mind during any repairs that we may make in the future to this vehicle.
Great Video, 1A.......took me 6 hours to pull assembly out, taped up the 'UP' wire near motor......also, a 'BIG thanks to the mechanic who repaired the door due to an accident 8 months ago........tip: use electrical tape around the motor then lay cable & tape over that..........the mechanic did not do that............Jimmy
+Jimmy Kuros That's a good tip. Thanks for posting it. And thanks for checking out our videos! If any of our viewers need to make this repair, we carry the part shown in this video on our website. This video gives me the impression that mercurys were built a little better than crown Vics…. Can any marquis owners concur? Maybe I’ll pay the extra for one…
My window was stuck in the down position. It wouldn't budge so I couldn't get to the two rivets holding the window to the lower end of the carriage. I ended up removing the two 11mm nuts on the bolts at the top of the carriage. I could push it in far enough to get a hacksaw blade in to cut the bolts off. With the inside window trim removed there was room to lift the window and carriage up so I could get to the lower rivets.
Well, I have watched this video a few times and stopped and rewound to go over certain areas. I have been out to my car, and with pin punch and hammer in hand I have punched the pin out of the rivets at the base of the regulator, but the force it took to do this does make me question driving those pins out of the window anchor points. As I watch you do this, it doesn't seem that you are using the force that I need to get these pins to move. Could you elaborate on this a little and explain the force needed to drive those pins back? Thanks. Great site and good info. Bill
My window tilts forward when coming upwards, so when it gets close to the top I must stop, tilt the window back, then roll it up the last 1"-2". Is this a regulator issue or a different part? I will gladly buy whatever is needed from you guys after seeing your great video. I was dreading it but not after seeing how easy it will be, especially after seeing the comments of how non mechanics were finding it fairly easy to accomplish. Thanks for your time.
+Nerv Mrc You may want to check where the window attatches to the window regulator to see if it has become loose, which may be causing this issue. 1aauto.com
I will check that out and hopefully that is the problem. If not, it is nice to know you guys are there to send me a new window regulator!!! I really like the quality of your video's by the way.
Great video very informing, I have a question, I ordered a new window for the drivers side front, the old piece doesn't have any holes, but the new piece is longer and has holes at the bottom, is there a kit or something for these holes to fit on to the regulator?
Thank you for watching! They should be a plug and play deal. You might want to contact the company you got the glass from to double check and make sure you received the correct one. 888-844-3393
I had a new motor and regulator installed on the front passenger side of my 2005 Grand Marquis, the window will go down, but not up..... Replaced the master switch and the window is still stuck in the down position. all other windows work except the front passenger. I have no idea what to do. Is it possible that the wires are bad? Please advise
You may want to test the power going to the window regulator motor when the switch is pressed in both the up and down positions. If there's power to the motor when the switch is pressed in both directions, it may be an issue with the window motor. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
In the video you stated that your window could still be powered down, but if not just manually roll it down, but how do you do that when it is fully closed? Thanks
Maybe too late. I used 1/4-20 course thread with nylon locking nuts. 1/2" on every thing and 3/4" on the Window itself. while I was in there, I added 1/2" bolt nylon nut to my power door lock. That was a bit nuts to get the nut In right spot. so yay window works and power lock works again.
I'm sure badge57 has his done, but for anybody else facing this - it depends on the size drill you use to remove the rivets. I used a 1/4" bit. It fit perfectly, and didn't open the existing holes. So I would have been able to go back in with 1/4-20 nuts and bolts. But the AC Delco regulator motor assembly that I purchased came with hardware -- 6mm, to be exact.
For anyone else that ask this, I used 1/4" x 1/2" bolts for everything that bolts to the door and 1/4 x 1" for the glass. Use nylock nuts and skip the lock washers.
It's not that hard of a job to do yourself if you follow our video. We carry new window regulators on our website with free shipping. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
You may want to remove the door panel and check the window regulator to see if one of the cables is broke or if the gear on the motor has stripped. We carry new window regulators on our website with free shipping if you need a new one. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Right now I Just Want To Get My window up but I Tried To Pull It Up With My Hands but the window Hard To Move How Do I Get The Window to move help.... I Have A 2006 grand marquis Ls
Going to give everyone a good tip. When installing the glass back in place use philips head screws on the glass when tightening do not go crazy and do not use hex head bolts with a ratchet. The glass will shatter. Trust me I know from experience.
You can buy it in a spray can at your local auto parts store. If the weatherstrip is dry it will help your window to glide a lot easier and faster. Hope this helps you out 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
are the same "tools needed" for the 94 crown vic? i am only going to replace the motor, and what brand motor do you recommend? i dont wanna have to do this any time soon although all 3 window motors are out! only the passenger side works
My mom has a 94 grand Marquis, replaced the switches and when you hit the up/down there is a laboring sound. Window doesn't move at all. The same goes for passenger side.could it be A) bad motor B) bad regulator C) bad motor and regulator
All of the components are okay except the cables, Can you replace the cables alone or is it just easier and more cost effective to replace the whole regulator?
Hello. so about a week ago some people smashed the windows on my 1989 ford crown Victoria. they completely smashed the front, rear, front right window, and the back right windows. I'm just wondering approximately how much would each cost? (not including taking it into a body shop)
To save some hassle do not remove the door handle. The hole that the wire for the motor goes through lines up with the inside rivet on the window. The door latch rod may be a bit annoying to work around but it is less annoying than removing and replacing the rivets of the door handle.
You may want to check the power going to the window motors when the switch is pressed to see if there's any power going to them. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
If there's a window regulator cable that's broke and keeping it from moving, you may need to loosen the cable so that you can move the glass up into position. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
+2wheelsonly cruiser Thank you for your order. I'm not sure on the exact size, you should be able to get some small ones that fit from your local hardware store. Mike, my regulator is fine but my window moves. If you grab it from each end and move it, it moves like it's pivoting on something in the middle, or something on the sides is loose. Any ideas?
1A. I have a 97 Marquis. Drivers side window won't ascend or descend, yet I can hear the motor running inside the door and the window appears to be bouncing. What approach should I take first?
