How to Reset a Transmission Control Module Chevy: 3 TCM Resetting Methods. In this video you will learn the three methods of resetting your Chevrolet TCM.
What is the TCM and why is resetting it important?
The transmission control module is an electronic component that tells your transmission how and when to shift gears. It uses input from sensors to determine the optimal time for gear changes based on your driving conditions.
Over time, transmission problems can develop if the adaptive learning functions in the TCM become corrupted. This leads to poor shift quality, transmission slippage, or abnormal behaviors like erratic shifting and gear change failures.
Resetting the TCM erases this faulty data, restoring factory settings and giving the system a fresh start. It's an easy thing to try if you have transmission issues before spending money on repairs.
I'll walk through three different methods to reset the Chevy TCM. Not all may work for your vehicle, so try them one at a time until you find the correct one.
Method 1: Use the Gas Pedal
Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes until the Chevy reaches normal operating temperature. Turn off all accessories like the radio and AC. Then, firmly push the gas pedal all the way to the floor and hold it there for 10 to 20 seconds.
While still pressing the pedal down, turn off the ignition. Continue holding the gas down for 10 more seconds. Then slowly release the pedal and wait 2 to 3 minutes without restarting the vehicle.
This forces the system into a hard reset. Restart the Chevy and let it run for several minutes. The transmission may behave oddly at first, but drive normally as the TCM relearns your habits.
Method 2: Disconnect the TCM
For most Chevy models, the TCM module is found under the windshield on the driver’s side in the engine bay. Some rear-wheel drive vehicles with a 4L60E transmission could have the TCM near the back of the transmission case or by the main engine computer.
Start by disconnecting the battery as a safety precaution, so no electrical shorts occur. Look for the cable plugged into the TCM, secured by either a latch or locking clips. Carefully release the latch or clips without forcing them. Then pull the cable connector out of the TCM port.
Leave the TCM disconnected for 10 to 30 minutes to completely reset the module. When the time is up, plug the connector back in securely and reconnect the battery. Start the engine and test drive under all conditions, monitoring the transmission operation.
Method 3: Turn the Ignition On
For this approach, don't start the engine. Simply turn the ignition key to the accessory or on position without cranking the starter. Next, push and hold the accelerator pedal fully to the floor for 15 seconds.
Release the pedal only after you turn the ignition off again. Wait about 5 minutes before starting the vehicle. Test drive for around 20 minutes minimum, getting the transmission through all gears under different loads and speeds.
Which method worked on your Chevy? Let me know in the comments section if resetting the TCM solved your transmission problems. Subscribe to the channel for more repair tips coming up in the future.
Now here’s some additional TCM background for those wanting more technical details. Feel free to skip ahead if you already understand how it functions.
Harsh shifting
Slipping between gears
Unusual shift points like staying in low gears despite RPMs building
Complete transmission failure
Check engine light for incorrect gear ratio codes
Burning smell from transmission overheating
Before replacing the entire unit, try resetting it to reinitialize system data and settings. But if problems return, then it likely requires professional diagnosis and repairs.
I hope this gives you a better concept of what the transmission control module is, why resetting it helps transmission issues, and how to easily perform that reset on your Chevy.

I made a small mistake, I meant the engine should be "On" and not running when you press the gas pedal. Apologies for this.

Fluid was real low. No leaks, shifted normal even tho the fluid was real low. Installed New fluid to correct level, now it will not go into gear. RESET TCM and it worked for about 200 feet and then reverse 200 feet then neutral again. Not slipping just not going into gear. RESET again and it worked again the same 200 Feet, and I even got on it some the second time/ only in a driveway. went to neutral again

My chevy s10 runs good, but struggles, somewhat getting into the 1st gear. A bit of a strain. After that, it's like normal. They've run a diagnostic test, saying that it's internal. Would that necessarily, mean transmission rebuild??

If this doesn't work try your ignition switch. Just got back yesterday from the transmission shop. Ran diagnostics inner of transmission great so he said it's really common issue. Hopefully that helps someone else out.

What led you to get the ignition switch? I stopped to get diesel. After filling up my truck wouldn't start. Got power But would crank the starter. Jumped the posts at the starter and it started, however it was stuck in 6th gear

Does the transmission control module in the 2013 Chevy Traverse have to be reprogrammed if the TCM has been replaced? The TCM is behind the trans cover and bolted inside, but has been replaced with a Non fried out TCM out of the same year vehicle?

I need help. My 2009 aveo5 has a u0100 code. I’ve check all my grounds and cleaned them and also replaced a few of the burnt wires. It runs and drives but struggles to shift. It will rev high into a gear and putt like it is going to stall. It is an automatic transmission as well.

I need help. I just changed to the output speed sensor in my 2015 Chevy .malibu ls. I put everything back together and started the car. When I go to shift, it does nothing. The car runs but won't go into gesr. What should I do?

Hi, It sounds like there might be an issue with the reassembly or connection of the output speed sensor or related components. Here's a concise plan of action: Double-Check Connections: Ensure the output speed sensor is properly connected, and there are no loose or misaligned connectors. Wiring and connectors should be secure and free from damage. Inspect for Damage: Verify that no wires were damaged or dislodged during the sensor replacement process. Look for any signs of pinching or stripping that could affect functionality. Transmission Fluid: Check the transmission fluid level and condition. Low or contaminated fluid can cause transmission issues. Error Codes: Use an OBD-II scanner to check for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that could indicate what the problem might be. This can provide specific clues for troubleshooting. Reset Battery: Consider disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to reset the vehicle's computer systems. Sometimes, a reset can help clear any glitches caused by the repair process. Manual Shift Test: If possible, manually shift through the gears with the engine off and ignition in the ON position to feel for any mechanical resistance or unusual behavior in the shift linkage. Let me know how it goes

Did nothing. However shifts fine accelerates fine still throwing code for torque and shift silanoids. Getting to be frustrating 😆 I have changed my silanoids wtf 😑

Hey Ryan, definitely a frustrating issue. Sorry to hear that. here is what I think. If your transmission is shifting and accelerating fine but still throwing codes for the torque converter and shift solenoids after you've replaced them, it could be an issue with the wiring or the transmission control module itself. It's worth checking the electrical connections for any damage or corrosion and considering a diagnostic to check the module's function. Other than that since you car shifts fine, you can be assured it''s a big problem but don't overlook it.

Thanks, went transmission shop yesterday. Ran diagnostic transmission is working great. Thank goodness 🙏 😅 he said it's common issue with the ignition switch or the wiring harness that connects to it. Appreciate your getting back to me with this issue.
