This is the greatest video EVER!!!! My spare key to my VW Passat that I gave to my husband, died. I replaced the battery TWICE, thinking that the 1st one may have been corrupted or something. But when it STILL didn't work after the 2nd new battery I knew something else was wrong with it. I went to the dealership and how much it costs to have my key fob reprogrammed, he said $90 - $120, but it's better just to get a new one altogether which costs $250. I left the dealership right away, pissed that I only have one set of keys to my car. That didn't sit well with me, so I searched Google on how to reprogram a VW Passat key fob and found this video. It took me all of 2minutes to reprogram my key fob on my own. THE BEST VIDEO EVER!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO! :-)
Hey Carolyn, I don't know you but the fact of read this comment, the way you describe how you feel, it's just the way I felt today. I felt so much empathy with you today, and I just wanted to let you know this. Have a nice day. It's good that we both have a solution through this amazing video
Before Google, there was the owners manual in the glovey box. We all HATE reading those things, due to how poorly they are edited.... but the info is in there. and it often will work. When it does not, I use diagnostic equipment. If it comes to that...yeah, around 100 buckaroos
THANK YOU! You just saved me a new key, tow truck fee and 3 day delay on my vacation sitting in a hotel waiting for VW to send my new key. VW was zero help at all on this!
Brilliant thanks, I was quoted £150 for a new key and £80 to recode after my VW Golf battery was changed by a Main Dealer but no thought about re-coding or checking that it then worked. Appreciate your video, it worked first perfectly.
Thanks a lot! Anyone doing this with push button start do the same procedure as above but just press the start button without your foot on the brake, because some don’t have keyed ignitions. Thank you so much!! 2014 Passat tdi
@roushrs3 is this just for the unlocking? Because my remote start on my 2013 passat is hit or miss. Will this work for this issue also? Thanks in advance
The key fobs for my Jetta stopped working. I tried this and it didn't work. Followed the owner's manual and that didn't work. Looks like I'll be locking and unlocking the doors the old fashioned way as I won't be paying hundreds of dollars to a dealership to get it fixed.
thank you for the vid. fixed the alarm issue with my 2000 jetta (old ass car i know). the alarm was always working until i recently changed the car battery. did pretty much everything mentioned with a couple minor differences: 1. pressed the unlock button on the key 2. inserted key into driver side keyhole (think my generation jetta's the keyhole isn't covered so nothing to prop open) 3. turned the key in the keyhole to unlock and the unlock alarm lights on the car lit up (2 blinks for unlock)...which might have programmed the key already but i still went to the next step 4. inserted key into ignition and just powered on, not engine start 5. locked the car from key and alarm set (1 blink and the beep sound) (in case this helps anyone else)
thank you but it doesnot work. I tried other advice and it did not either. It suddenly stopped working last week I could close car remotely but open only with key inserted into the keyhole. What on car could be broken?
Another outstanding video from wheels and motors. I had the key reprogrammed at VW when one key got stolen and it stopped opening doors a couple of mouths later. VW suggested the key was worn (4 years old) and wanted to charge me 300 quid for a new key. This video sorted the problem out quicker than the drive to the dealer. Note I have keyless go and the process is very similar. Only difference is when in the car just start it using the button and this synced the key
The dealer was either ignorant or unethical to not test the remote battery for output, and attempt resync, which is right in the owner's manual. I would find a better mechanic, and a better dealership.
I replaced the battery and my remote flashed but wouldn't lock or unlock my Passat doors. I was about to throw my remote key in the trash when I found this video. It took me about two minutes to reset it and now my remote works like a charm. Thanks!!!
The manual for my 2007 Passat Wagon does not mention this procedure but i tried it and worked. The 12V battery was dead flat so needed the plastic key to open drivers door then climb inside to locate the small boot release in the tailgate. Once i swapped the battery (located in the boot wheel arch) i found the central locking doesnt work. 1) Lock car using plastic key 2) Unlock using plastic key 3) insert plastic key back into keyfob 4) insert key into ignition 5) Take key out exit car and try to lock remotely if it doesnt lock you may need to try again or replace remote battery
@@wawayltd In this case, yup. lot of non rhyming stealers, too. Also, what a good test for a prospective new mechanic.... bring something like this, and see what they recommend.
Thanks!! As newby VAG user surprised after reloplacing new remote battery. After couple ingitionLockCharged-Fords i was upset until this video. ....Manual 4cm thick and foreign language...
This is a really good video and seems to work for a lot of people. But apparently not in my case. I bought a Skoda Octavia from 2006 (so it should be exactly the same as your VW) a couple of weeks ago, and the main key works, but the spare doesn't. The light on the key flashes when you push the button, but it doesn't unlock the car; and if you use the actual key to open the door, you can get in and start the engine (keeping in mind being quick about it as the alarm goes off if you haven't started within one minute). I've tried doing this, as that didn't work I changed the battery, and tried again, still nothing. Have you (or anyone else here in the comments) had any similar problems? Any tips other than going to a VW dealer and paying for a new key? (the previous owner said the second key hasn't been used for quite some time as he thought it had just ran out of battery and started using the other one instead)
There are few other videos about re-setting keys on VW and Audis. Some use second key a help to re-set first one. Could be just faulty key. Unfortunately - I don't have straight answer :(
@@wawayltd Okay, thanks. Yeah I've tried a couple of other "versions" similar to this but still nothing. I'll probably make do with only one key until I can afford getting a mechanic to look at it.
Both keys stopped working on my seat I replaced the batteries and still not working went to a garage they said it's an old car (10years) and is definitely the door lock actuator/door lock solenoid as one of the keys is brand new so they wanted to charge me around £200 ... Ive done this trick and it works perfectly 🎉 garages eh 🤢 ( strange stuff Bluetooth wasn't working and it was like she was struggling to start) all sorted now
Remember, this is just for resyncing the central locking function. It's not reprogramming the key/immobilizer. The battery has nothing to do with the car's immobilizer. In every key, there is a small transponder hidden inside it. This is separate from the central locking circuit and works without a battery. This transponder is only possible to program with special hardware.
Yep, totally agree. I trew battery into this video, just to make 2 in 1 once we are talking about the key. Often people ask - can I do that with the new key, the answer is no.
Hey I have a 2016 mk6 Jetta with kessy and no ignition hole, was messing up with factory reset in Vcds and therefore both keys won’t open or lock the car, I can still start engine, tried pairing with channel 1 adaptations BCM but it won’t work any help ?
Super solution my key was in the contact and de Skoda Yeti 2011 says key not in range! I could open and close the doors with the remote buttons. But not start!! I replaced the battery but same result. Then I closed the door, opened it manually with the key in the door and then started the car within a minute. No messages anymore ... and it starts ... again thx!!
I have recently had to have a mechatronic unit replaced which affected one of the keys, I looked at the manual but couldn’t make sense of it, so having found this online is great, and this actually works, thank you so much, you’ve saved me another garage visit and another bill. Thank you.
I hava also changed mehatronic on Passat GTE 2017, but I can not fix this by this method a second key. It just says doesnt recognize a key! Any other smart solution? 😊 Thank you
I have a 2013 Amarok ( I live in Australia) and have just changed the battery (it lasted 7 years...) Now I can't open all of the windows simultaneously with the key..??
Don't worry Eric, they all have this glitch. When you disconnect battery, car needs some time to "remember" how to do automatic window open/close. Give it couple days and some driving - it will go back to normal.
Brilliant video! Also (FYI for any future readers of this comment section), this "out of sync" problem can occur if one clicks the "open" key too many times when out of range. This is something that can occur if one clicks "open" when trying to find their car in a parking lot. Cheers!
hey I really hope you respond, I have this same problem with a 2018 Atlas, do you know how to reset it if the truck doesnt have a Key Ignition? what do I do?
Thank you thank you thank you. I literally bought this car a week ago. When I went to leave for work the other day I accidentally pressed the panic button while the key was in the ignition. Wouldn’t lock or unlock. So figured battery in the fob was dead. So new battery with no luck. Luckily I have another key but It was really buggin me for the past few days. You’re the man!!
Thank-you so much. My car was almost on E and I couldn't figure out how to open the gas flap. I replaced the battery and it still wouldn't work. I googled how to reset and saw your video. I can't say thank -you enough. Life saver!!!
This isn't working for my 2004 be Passat unfortunately. The red light on the remote lights when I push buttons but it doesn't communicate with the car no matter what I do.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was losing my mind. What hoops they make you jump through to reprogram your fob! I spent a hour trying to get this to work.
Thanks so so much!!! This has been so helpful. Thanks for the all the details and the great explanation. The dealer wanted to charge me 250£ to re sync ! Thanks again 🙏🙏
German cars. Amazing technology. As a mechanic not used to working on them, they can be intimidating. But I've serviced BMW's and they're more complex. Thanks for this video.
I had people in comments below resolving problem with push start button. However, I don't think it will program new fob.. You can try, but I'm not sure.
Last time I left my keys in my pants and gave them a good wash in the washing machine I was charged big money to “reprogram “ the key. This time I found you on RU-vid. You saved me time and money. Many thanks 👍
I love my 04' Passat GL Wagon. It was my X-wifes vehicle for a period before I finally got a chance to buy it. Her father, a dealer for Toyota, kept up on it, and I helped during the time I was able. Even I had forgotten as well as the xwife that even though the rear tailgate has an electric trunk opener inside as well as on the fob it also has a keyhole hidden very well in the upper right corner of the license plate. Just right at the end of handle. It was caked from not being used till I was detail cleaning. Smacking my forhead, I cleaned it up and relubricated everything. Never forgetting that again. Plus I love the small center visor that is easily forgotten. LoL
My key fob stopped communicating with my car. I changed battery no luck. I also purchased car without the pull out key, only key fob. Is there a way to re sych the fob with no master key? Thank you
Hey all you readers out there - I just ante'd up $2 - deal of a lifetime ! Everyone commenting about how much they saved - how about putting your hands together 👏👏AND THEN IN YOUR POCKETS ! Just sayin.....😊
I have the one with no key hole for the ignition, all I had to door was hit unlock and turn key in door and it was reprogrammed. THANKS FOR THE HELP!!! SAVED ME
On my polo 6r I need to press 2-3 times to lock the car. The led lights on every time I press the key but it never closes at first try. What could be the issue?
@@wawayltd Do you mean the car battery or the key battery? The key battery is new, I don't know the status of the car battery, I purchased this car a month ago
I must have researched on-line a good three hours trying to find out why my freshly re-battery'd fob wouldn't open the car, and how to obtain a replacement fob and get it reprogrammed and re-cut. Then I ran across this two-and-a-half minute video, and voila! My fob works just fine. Wheels And Motors rocks!
I was told I’d need a computer when I left key in my pants in the washing machine. Happened before and I had to pay a fortune. Because of you I saved time and money! Thank you 🙏
It's moments like this and people like you that makes life so simple and wonderful 😂. I just did this 'hack' on my 2014 Octavia cuz the door open/close touch wasn't working. Everything is back to normal now. You, kind Sir, are a hero😎🕺. Thanks mate!
