(Proverbs 26:4,5) "Do not answer a fool, according to his folly, or else you will be like him. Answer a fool, according to his folly, or else he will think he is wise." These proverbs indicate that people's mockery should be responded to, on a case by case basis. There is no 'one size fits all.'

The mocking, scoffing and insults of atheists only remind me that they really don't want people to be free to believe whatever they want and that they recognize that there must be something to all of this if they're so negative about Christianity and are willing to devote so much time to it. Their verbal attacks reinforce my faith and bring to mind what Jesus says about them and us. "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. John 15:18‭-‬19

@@theoskeptomai2535 Please read Dr. Edward Feser's 'Five Proofs of the Existence of God.' Interesting to note that hard philosophical argumentation on that topic leads to the same divine attributes of God the Bible describes throughout its 66 books, written by 40 men, over a period of 1500 years, I.e. consistent. Also, there is no need to discuss 'gods,' since there is only ONE truth God, who is worthy of worship. Any other being would necessarily be a 'creature,' like you and me, created and therefore contingent on God's creative power (or to put in other terms, requiring a cause outside of its existence). I would also challenge you to examine DNA. Is it simply a random collection of chemicals, or is it inherently specified complexity? Now, ask yourself: can you find ANY examples of specified complexity/information (I.e. instructions) that is accidental, with no intelligence behind it, and that can be repeated?

I don't have 50 minutes to go through all of this, but I will say that like any group - or person- with an opinion, you are entitled to have your voice heard without being mocked. It is however important to be able to tell the difference between someone engaging your assertion with a legitimate question, counterpoint, or offering evidence which contradicts your claim... and somebody who is being a 'troll' If you don't want to have your opinions and assertions challenged, you can post them on a website that doesn't permit feedback, or you can put them in a book. Here where the rest of us interact, when a person makes an unfounded assertion, they will usually get called out on it.
@djdonohue
@djdonohue 4 года назад
@G Will - well here's one now. "Athiest" is not a position of making a claim [therefore cannot be "called out"] it is the position of not having enough reasonable evidence to support the claimed belief. When a person claims to believe in Bigfoot, and the atheist asks "on what evidence", and there is none... the atheist is not making a claim, they are pointing out that position of making that claim is unjustified, or dishonest. There may be people on here making claims, but it has nothing to do with the position of being an atheist.

@UCU7wSsxHC1w8QZD5WrFYA5w To understand the other side. Some, if not most atheists used to be religious, some very religious. I can't say for myself, since I'm an exception to other atheists, but from what I understand, what's being said in the churches wasn't clicking with them due to the hypocrisy within the church vs the Gods described character. Some deep within the church even read the bible front to back which exacerbates cognitive dissonance because of how the book is written, what's being preached, and what's actually in the Bible. The cognitive dissonance, freaks them out due to the threat of Hell, but they press on to clear their doubts, so they learn what the other side has to say, whether it be from science communicators, atheist channels or science papers hoping to clear their doubts. But in the end reality says a completely different story and they become an atheist. When I said I was an exception, I meant it. I was in highschool watching Christian doomsday channels for a few months, they were messing with my psyche and all I saw was evil where there was none. A few months after I started watching them, I snapped out of it like a switch was flipped, and I became an atheist.

"They aren't interested in conversation at that point. Only reinforcing their position." From my point of view its Christians that aren't interested in a conversation. In fact many times its like talking to a brick wall. Like the Adam and Eve story, I can point out the problems and why its immoral. Christian will do mental gymnastics trying to justify their gods actions. There are real problems with the Christian religion. But Christians refuse to see them. I know because I was an indoctrinated Christian for over 30 years. Its not about truth with religious people, its about validating your preconceived beliefs.

Regarding those who reject Christianity: one of my favorite Frank Turek sayings is asking if a person is on a relentless pursuit of truth or on a quest for personal happiness? The mockers of Christianity typically have little to no reason for rejecting it, other than it doesn't comport with their chosen lifestyle. The very rare atheist that desires truth, when pressed, usually will admit that at some level "I just don't like the idea of there being a god/gods/God." . That's when Frank's other best line comes in: "If Christianity were true, would you believe it?" I don't ever hear a 'yes' in response to that, which basically means a person lost the logical debate and it's a matter of the heart, not the head. . As a Christian, I will never refuse to believe something that is true. I will question, debate, scrutinize, and rigorously test....but if at the end of the day all the evidence and logic points to "X" being true, I will believe X. To do otherwise is insane.
@cygnusustus
@cygnusustus Год назад
I'm on a search for truth first, personal happiness second. I simply could not be happy believing in a delusion, so truth takes priority. "The mockers of Christianity typically have little to no reason for rejecting it," We have plenty of reasons for rejecting it. You have no reasons for accepting it except that it makes you happy. You are not on a quest for truth. "If Christianity were true, would you believe it?" Yes. "I don't ever hear a 'yes' in response to that" I'm sure you have heard a "yes" response to that many times, which basically means you cannot support your beliefs with logic and have to rely upon lies. "As a Christian, I will never refuse to believe something that is true." That's not the problem. The problem is the low bar you set for believing something is true. " I will question, debate, scrutinize, and rigorously test" As a Christian, no you will not. You do not question your beliefs, nor do you test them. Your beliefs are based on faith, not evidence and reason. "if at the end of the day all the evidence and logic points to "X" being true, I will believe X." Like all Christians, you like to pretend you have evidence but if asked to provide it you will either come up blank or you will reveal that you have no clue what "evidence" is.

We all have someone which we are not in a good relationship or maybe we know someone and they both hate each other, now God does not hate people,He hates sin but imagine if those two people would be together. They would not talk or look at each other and in some cases a fight would start. God is giving everyone a choice and you to,if you want Him then He offers you salvation as free gift but if you reject it then God cant do nothing against your free will.
@MrBilioner

@Daw Wad What is determined it will happen no matter our choices. You cant say God control our choices then you would say God is evil for causing it but our free will does it,not Him. He has a plan which He planed and it will come to pass no matter the choices we make. Sin is originally disobeying God and you cant make a square circle because it does not make sense. God designed humans to be with Him to know Him and to do His will because its the best for us but if we chose not to then we do our will that goes against what God intended and opposite of good is evil,there is no third option. God cant force you to obey Him. If you know the story about pharaoh and moses how God hardened pharaohs hearth but later is says that pharaoh himself hardened it. God is sovereign over everything even our choices despite it does not look like that, he is still God. But some things God cant do like lie or to deny Himself. Would you become christian if you knew the bible is true? Many wont because they want to do their own will which leads to destruction at the end. I know that from my experience.

Proving miracles or the supernatural exist doesn't get you any closer to proving theism. And I'm an atheist who is open to the idea there might be a supernatural. Now, Turek is saying a lot about the supernatural. But he can't explain the supernatural. He doesn't know how it works. Assuming the universe did have a supernatural origin, do we have any other information about it's origin? Do we know if a sentient being created the universe, or if it's creation was a "natural process of the supernatural?" No. Do we know how the supernatural created the universe? No. So, we're not anywhere closer to theism.

@@jessebryant9233 I simply read the Bible cover to cover. At that time, I was considering attending seminary. I'll give you two examples from a long line of problematic passages contained therein. Ezekiel, in chapter 26, declares in striking terms that Tyre would be destroyed so thoroughly by Nebuchadnezzer that it would never be found again. That didn't happen until 240 or so years later by Alexander. The reason Zeke gave for this destruction was "a saying". That doesn't seem quite fair, does it? The second has to do with David. If the law of Moses had been adhered to, he never should have been king. Deuteronomy 23:3 states that: "An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to their tenth generation shall they not enter into the congregation of the LORD forever:" David's great grandmother was Ruth, a Moabitess. According to the above passage, no Moabite should ever enter the congregation. It's not about naturalism being correct. It's about the Bible being wrong (in my view) on numerous topics.

@@enkidufive3349 *P1:* Why were you considering attending seminary? Also, it sounds like you're going to criticize the Christian view rather than make the case FOR your own view. Not very persuasive and I fail to see how that answers my question. *P2:* What? You'll need to a bit more specific than that... I mean, what exactly is your issue here? *P3-5:* Again, how does that answer my inquiry at all? I know I'm confused... Seems like maybe you are as well! Nothing you said is any kind of evidence/reason FOR having faith in naturalism. Nothing you've provided is a good reason to believe that naturalism (which must be true if atheism is true) is or even could be true.

@@jessebryant9233 I was a Southern Baptist. I believed. I'm also fairly well-spoken. That's why I was thinking of attending seminary. I still read and study the Bible, FYI. I'm not criticizing the Christian worldview, either. I'm critiquing a book with lots of improbable things written into it. It states that magic, witches, ghosts, and giants existed when, so far as we know, they don't and never have. The book states that one can breed livestock in the presence of peeled sticks and thus change the color of their offspring. The ancients tossed lots to get answers from their god. The Hebrew form of worship was no different than any other of the time, either. One would think this god would have something more unique to offer than what was established by heathens. Further, I didn't say I had any faith in naturalism, though the natural is all that can be measured and quantified. I'm not sure what your second point is referring to, either, so I really can't comment. Do you mean the part about David? Here's the gist of it: if a book, any book, presents things that can't be tested or are known to be false, it likely isn't true. Harry Potter books by their nature aren't true. They're fiction. I'm not saying the ancients disbelieved their own writings. I'm saying a lot of what they wrote was plain wrong therefore not believable. It wasn't uncommon in their time to think these things existed, but it is on ours. That's the basis of my apostasy.

Mocking people is one thing and is bad, but mocking a religion is entirely different. In my old IFB church, they would mock other Christian denominations then turn around and get offended, and I mean very offended, when other denominations laughed at what we believed. The thing is the Bible has talking snakes, talking donkeys, the sun standing still for a day, the Red Sea parting, people rising from the dead, etc. And these things might seem normal to those of us who were raised Christian, but for people who weren't, these things seem pretty laughable. We don't see these things happening everyday, and if someone came up to me and said, "My formerly dead Aunt came back to life," I would laugh at him, and this isn't a personal attack against him. I would just think he's pretty looney.

We shouldnt just ignore it when people repeat the same talking points they hear from their professors, the media, and their friends, and not tell them they're wrong. Many people dont even personally know a Christian, so we should witness to them by telling them the truth and then asking God to speak to their hearts- some will be receptive, and some hearts will always remain hard- no matter how much evidence you show them.

Belief is so simple.... without a creator there is no point in any of this thing we call life. Nothing matters... whether you believe or not doesn't matter either... so therefore belief in the creator is a win-win situation. If you are right you are saved and will dwell with the lord for eternity. If you are wrong it never mattered anyway and when you pass you are just gone and your belief caused you no harm and your soul no foul. I know my lord and savior exists and I ask him to give me strength to follow him faithfully daily. No matter how many times I fall short of his glory I ask for the same strength each day in hopes of being even a small portion of what he meant me to be. God bless your soul if you choose to reject God. You are in a losing battle. If you're wrong and he exists you will be in hell for eternity. If your right nothing mattered anyway and all you did was live your life outside of faith with no sense of meaning until you passed. Likely living outside of the moral confines that we have decided are better for the longevity of society.
