I'm in the market for a new JD and didn't realize even the hood was cheapened up! This LA series is one big piece whereas the new S models are even thinner and 3 piece snap together. The hood holder hinge also is plastic instead of a high gauge steel!
1. Clean up work area. 2. Clean Work Bench. Allow 1 hr. per Ft. 3. NEVER put clear plastic items on the floor. 4. Leave hood mounted on tractor for most polishing. 5. Order new front bumper. I have not seen Nu Finish in a paste form. Great results.
For the headlights just use a car headlight shine, I’ve got the same hood and that’s what I did and it’s like glass, you can see through, looks brand new
The colored material you are taking off is oxidation, thats the cloudy stuff that makes it look like crap in the first place. Foam pads even on a rotary dont have the cut. Wool pad different story. Also, wool pads dissipate heat better, also use microfibre cloths instead of cloths. Looks good though nice job!!!
Can you send me the link where you got the polishing kit for the drill? I need some small wheels for polishing tight areas my smallest Orbital buffer is 6” need something smaller love these results fixing to do my John Deere LA145 hood hope it turns out as good as yours
This is not an orbital, but below are the 4 links for the stuff I got. First will be the polisher itself, then the 7" polish kit, 3" polish kit, and last the polish itself. This will help after some years but my JD is fairly new, although a reconditioned/returned machine. As such, they burned some numbers into the rear plastic fender,, 3" x 3" area, I guess so it can't be sold as new, but it looks awful and I'd like to restore it by smoothing it out, filling it in, then some JD green spray paint. Any ideas how that can be done?
It's kind of hard to describe the best way to fix it without seeing what we are talking about, however filling plastic isn't usually a good idea. Plastic is bendy and fillers usually crack out. So does paint. Just like these hood the plastic is usually colored all the way through. Depending on how deep the damage is, I'd recommend sanding the area smooth then keep sanding down to 2000 or 3000 grit sandpaper, then follow the process in this video to polish it back up. If it's too deep and the remaining plastic would be too thin to function well I'd just recommend replacement for a good fix. Obviously if you are able to sand it out without being too thin, you would need to sand the surrounding area to a nice smooth transition to eliminate or mitigate the appearance of the depression in the plastic of the finish/polished part.
@@KarlsKrafts Thanks for your reply. It is a little deep and it appears they may have used something like a soldering iron to imprint the numbers. I just saw another video about melting HDPE plastic such as what is commonly used for milk containers. It becomes very pliable and I may try that although I think there are other fillers that could work as long as they can be sanded and painted. There's a pic I posted at "my tractor forum" under "john deere" My post heading, on the first page, is "Repair #s on fender" if you wish to check it out. I do understand your point about the bendy nature of plastic - I hope to find something that is also bendy!
Anytime! I ordered the decals from Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07X21LRF5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JJODU22/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
As you saw in the video I never sanded it out. Thats the original "orange peel" and theres no paint so it's not even orange peel. That's plastic from a mold.
