In days video I will show you How to restore peeled headlight clear coat, I have done videos before about ( how I fixed faded headlight ) but this is a different case, if you have same problem, this video for you

Steps for peeled clear coat
-Removing the old clear coat by using 240 grit sandpaper
-Removing the deep scratches that been created by 240 grit sandpaper with 800 grit sandpaper
-Smoothing the surface by 1000 grit sandpaper
-Applying 2K clear coat
-After 4 days minimum, sand it to remove the orange peel with 1000,1500 grit sandpaper
- Bring back the shine with rubbing compound
-Polishing for more shiner surface
-Protect it with wax

Your video is one of many I used to reference when doing my headlights. Mine are about 20+ years old, and have some microcracking in the plastic, but it's almost unnoticeable now after clearcoating, and I have very little orange peel! Thank you for the great video, once I installed the headlights on the car again I'll wet sand and buff them to get the little orange peel out.

If you use a certified clearcoat like Maguires clearcoat with added UV protection, Its the after care that makes the difference to long-term clarity? A headlight wax polish with uv protection 3 times a year will add years to the clearcoat longevity!!🤔👍

Never used 2k clear on headlamps, just been using that Meguiar's headlamp protector, but that clearcoat filled in them sandpaper scratches really nice.

Never ever use 2k on headlights ever, Reasons because if it's not written on the can for headlights don't use it!! Stick with Maguires, As 2k is a nightmare to remove wet or dry sanding either by hand or rotary drill, Its way to hard!!!🤔😡👍

I probably wouldn't go with a 240 grit at all. I've edited this post because I just tried a 400 grit on my wife's car. You'll put some serious scratches of the plastic for sure that'll stay visible if you jump to 800 grits. I still see my scratches just using a 400 grit. But I'm learning that you'll probably need to wet sand that and move up in grit gradually to smooth out the scratches. 400 to 500 to 600 to 800 to 1000 to 1500 to 2000 and then 3000. You can't jump big with low grits. Once you hit 800 you can jump to 1000. No way you jump to 800 from 240. That is nuts. I am now dealing with these clear coat oxidation headlights for clients with these kinds of headlights. They don't yellow. They just peel. But that factory clear coat is a dog fight to remove. Thanks for this video post because it has shown me that I have to go harder on the grit to get that clear coat off. I run into GMC and FORD F-150 trucks that has that hideous clear coat on their headlights. Basically a lot of these 2013 and newer vehicles has that kind of clear coat.

Both wrong!! First wet sanding is old school, Dry sanding works better as wet sanding acts like a lubricant and slows down surface removal,A cordless drill with variable speed control means less effort and less mess, Best grit size to start p500-p800-And lasty a trizact p3000 with water, When sanding only use light pressure low 2 mid speed, Clean lens with any glass cleaner as most have added alcohol!!! Dry useing a clean micro fibre cloth, Add a foam polishing head to drill again light pressure add polish to foam pad and dab over lens evenly start polishing lens mid 2 higher speed keep the head moving until evenly covered, Wipe down lens and spray a headlight clearcoat if it's not written on the can don't use it!!! Maguires clearcoat recommend 2 coats, Most people spray once!! If anyone is serious about headlights restoration follow these instructions they'll come out looking brand-new I promise!!! 😃😊👍🇬🇧

Your headlights looked good before you started! I'm doing this now after trying a kit to use with a drill. Dont bother with those. I can confirm that good quality wet sanding sheets give you better control, last longer, and bite better than the crap in those kits. The clear coat is very difficult to remove, and it's not clear whether I've actually removed it or just scuffing it up to look like the adjacent exposed polycarbonate. PS I saw another video which claimed brake fluid can strip the clear coat without harming the plastic. Would be interesting to have this confirmed.

Heavy cut compound first step if you dont have very much oxidation. On my 99 crv, i periodically buff my lights, but they arent very oxidized so i just hit it with the compound 3 or 4 times.

I did the Chrisfixx version... the freaking headlights now are pealed clear coat (I'm in Florida) and my Acura TL headlights still haze/yellow up. How long of a fix does this last since it seems to be similar process. I'm guessing those "headlight restoration kits" don't really work either?

Nice job! On 2:50 I noticed the lens is still blurry and when you sprayed the clear coat it eventually turned clear. Does that mean I don’t have to wet sand it until it becomes clear and apply the paint?

No when no matter what grit sand paper you use it will always be blurry. The clear is what makes the headlights clear again after the wet sanding process. It's hard to explain why and how the clear coat makes them clear again. But if I can explain it in a way I know how to or a way you might know or seen something to this affect done before. Have you ever or seen someone wet a cars clear coat. While detailing for paint correcting or to fix minor scratches. But were they wet sanded the car clear isn't shinny anymore. Until the area is buffed with compond then its comes back shinny. It's the same concept. But even though he buffed them out he had to clean them for the clear coat process. After he cleaned the polish off that's why they looked hazy still until he cleared them. The polish at the end protects the clear. Just like the polish does on a cars clearcoat as well.

I have 2 questions. Firstly after i have sand off and spray my clear coat. Got multiple small bubbles within the coat. 2nd q, why do you need to sand off again after the first clear coat.

Put the can in warm water to, it will reduce it the bubbles it's called orange Peels, and even though it will create some orange Peel but much less, so that's why I sanded it at then as u can saw to make it smooth finish

i did sanding steps and when it comes to spray clear coat it was about to be empty so it looks blur now I get a new clear coat and what shall I do I spray the clear coat again or start with the polish the head light looks awful

You can let it dry and then wet sand it with 800 grid and then 1000 sandpaper, then use polishing compound, it will be clear as new

If I use a clearcode with integrated UV-protection, do I really need to maintain the shinyness with extra UV-protective-additive? I mean, yes, the clearcode (which has been sprayed on) has to be sanded down later on, but isn't there any clearcode left aftet I wetsand it just a little to remove all the orange peel? You will be wet sanding it with very fin grit, so there will be plenty clear coat will be left, and apply was or sealant will be good to make it last longer, but not to make it shiny, its already looking good after clear coat

I’ve tried the clear coat method twice now with 2 different brands of clear, both times I got crows foot (cracks) in the paint. Major annoying. Even did light coats 1st and 2nd and a heavier 3rd coat. The paint still cracks. I’m going to just sand them back again and cut and polish and wax.

The clear coat chracks or the plastic ?, if you use lacquer thinner or alchohol for cleaning or thinning the clear, the will crack the plastic headlight

@@jayz.8431 I gave up on the clear coat method, I ended up doing the cut and polish method. Still came out looking good. I wet sanded them back with 600, then 1200, then 1500 and then cut and polished them. I then put some wax on them to protect them as long as possible.

Clear coat in cold weather causes orange Peel, unless you put the clear coat can in warm water if you are using can and spray in in garage somewhere will less humidity

Good job,, i have a corolla 2016, the engine light and trac off light are on and when i check it It gives me Code P0171 , which means there is a lick of evaporation system, how do you think i can fix it?

It could if you over sand it or use to heavy a grit, that’s why he used 1500 grit (very fine) I’d use 1500 too or even 2000 grit.

After spraying clear coat, you will have like orange peel texture, I smoothed down that too, but you can leave it aswell if you are happy about the rest

2K paint is very dangerous. You should be aware of the very real health risks, even when taking precautions. Simple face masks are not enough.

Spraying it with clearcoat, then sanding and using polishing compound on it made ZERO sense. You just took off the clear and you are basically polishing the raw plastic. Makes sense, but why hit it with clear coat if you're just going to remove it? Your best bet at this point is to just polish it every few months once you're done and skip the clear coat.

When the clear coat peeling, polishing doesn't fix that, you have to remove the rest of the clear coat and apply it again

So you are removing old failing clear coat.. then putting more on🧐🤔..then polish them.. For me it is a lot easier to polish the headlights after sanding and add a cheap ceramic coating every year or so😃

Didn't you see the old clear coat was peeling and exposing plastic, you cant polish it if there is no clear coat on it, the sun light will make it yellow with time, plus if a clear coat peeling in one spot, it will peel off all, it's just matter of time, that's why I removed all and apply a new one on sanded surface

@@AliMECH 🧐 I know.. thats why i chose to use a cheap ceramic coating on the headlights after sanding all the old clear of.. so it is protected from the suns harmful rays.. you dont need the clear coat.. the ceramic coating is the clear coat 👍🏻👍🏻

@@AliMECH I have found that A cheap ceramic coating (like $30) will last just as long as a more expensive coating (like $250) Edit... on headlights

@@MNpicker this was a good tutorial but I got to agree with @MNpicker I do auto detailing and headlights restoration I go through the three stages of sanding the compound/polish and add a cermic coating on it and call it a day be done in hour
