RU-vid recommended me this 5 years after oroginal upload date, Today. And when I started watching it, I felt wierd and asked, has this guy changed his tone of narration and all his theme? Then, I checked the date, it was 2014. WoW!

I'm actually tempted to buy a 14" 1080p IPS panel and suitable controller from ebay purely for this idea as I like smaller screens with a really high pixel density for console gaming. they simply look sharper than the larger screens where you can see the individual pixels. great video by the way, you've gained yourself a subscriber :D

Interesting project. The only real problem is that the controller boards tend to be pricy, and laptop screens tend to run small. This is a great project to save a screen you might use in a portable device or don't want to toss out for sentimental reasons, but if you genuinely need a monitor, then just buy one preassembled because it's not that much more expensive than buying a controller board. And honestly, even if you want to work with bare panels and find preassembled monitors unsuited to your application, you can probably buy a nicer LCD than what was in your old laptop for very little money, relatively speaking. There's a huge variety of LCD panels out there... once you start looking at them, you'll start imagining all kinds of projects. For instance, I want a 4:3 aspect ratio monitor, but they don't make many of them anymore (outside of medical imaging applications), although 4:3 panels are much easier to find than 4:3 monitors.

tip: of you keep the input/ output board inside and get the shortest extender for the vga and dvi and run it to the side of the case, you can input both of those signals. get a raspberry pi and put it inside, run the usb and Ethernet to the side, and reposition the turn on off switch to a place easily accessible. then connect the hdmi to the raspberry pi and then the input on the controller. bam, you have made a raspberry pi screen and computer with 2 extra inputs.

@@Macatho Why biuy a controller and why buy a a monitor just to tear it apart? Why take something usable and functioning and tear it apart so you can use it for the same function it was already capable of? Hey there, awesome idea! I decided to make one too with my old dell laptop, which has a nice lcd screen. After ordering the new driver board for the lcd screen and some weeks later I was finally able to try this out. I connected the lcd to the driver board, and the driver board to my laptop. Everything worked perfectly fine so I decided to place the screen at a better place. After plugging all the cables in again the screen started to turn on and of, it's like a sharp white color for a really short amount, than it turns black, a few seconds later it does the same. this just continues. When I press the menu button and the screen blinks white, I can see the little menu popup. Sometimes when I try it again the screen works just fine, but most of the time it just starts blinking and blinking and blinking.... I really have no clue what's wrong. Is there anybody who can help me?

ebay, electronic hobbyist stores. Just make sure you find out what the power needs are.

So you still have to buy extra parts for this? That sucks. Only reason I came here was to find out if I could make a cheap monitor instead of having to buy one.

If the old laptop was 1080p then it will be cheaper than a new monitor. Maybe not as pretty though...

+blackice273 You have to remove the components from the motherboard and make your own schematic. Good luck with that. :) Not impossible but very hard
