After you grind the root crown down flat, the center will be shiny Allowing the undercut and slag line to be more visible by the contrast in color . You are using a motion that is kind of a digging motion. You come in hot, sit there for a split second until you see the slag line be consumed into the weld puddle and the undercut on the bevels get filled in . You continue this digging motion around the pipe until all the “WAGON TRACKS” are removed and you have the first two weld passes strongly fussed together without defects. Thank you David! Thank you
Sorry to answer your question, the root pass is the only one that produces wagon tracks, because it’s the only on welded with a dragged type stringer pass. The fillers and cap passes produce somewhat heavy slag coating that is easy to buff off!
It’s a Tillman 5210 L ( left arm) I have also used the LAPCO arm pads. LOUISIANA ARM PAD COMPANY A couple of welders from the Morgan city La. Area started out making arm pads, then caps khaki shirts, umbrellas etc. I tried using one of the new fancy leather arm pads. I think I paid about $180.00 for it. It was beautiful to look at but very uncomfortable to wear. To me it felt like I was trying to weld with a two by four on my arm. I welded for 30 mins with it and was going to throw it away. One of the welding students wanted it so I gave it to him. These have foam rubber inside covered by leather with a Velcro leather flap that quick folds over to adjust to your fore arm size. Easy on easy off. Over time the Velcro may get worn or burnt if mishandled. They cost about 30- $35 . I buy several at a time when I find them. You can buy about 6 for the price of the others. After a day or so of welding the foam leather will conform to the shape of your arm and you can’t even tell you’re wearing anything. Just my opinion , everyone’s got one. Thank you Todd!

The hot pass…… cleans the root pushes the root in adds insurance to the root also……. Undercut won’t be as bad if the rod is a lot more perpendicular than shown here coming off the top of that pipe….. little lead is fine but this is drastic
