Are you training for a half marathon or maybe you have a different virtual race planned? Tell us how you are preparing for it and where you are with your training in the comments down below!
Yep it’s my favourite distance. This very useful as I’m desperate to break the 1 hr 40 barrier. May just do as time trial but hopefully some races back by December.
Great video as always team. Love your content, always inspiring. My (unofficial) half PB is low 1.40 set a week into lockdown as my race was cancelled. Currently training for a hilly trail half, I often overdo it though so liked the tip on recovery. Keep up the good work!
So I’m 27 from TX certainly I weigh 325lbs and I’m doing my first 13.1 at the end of August. Since I started walking just over a month ago I’ve got to do a mix of 5k 10k & 12k My current pace is 16:20-16:50 mile. My goal for the half is to do it in under 4 hours. A far cry from this time, but a start in the right direction. Thanks as always for the helpful tips and tricks!
At 3:30 you mention long runs should start at 9miles and build to 13 or 14miles. Is this meant to be km or is it ideal to run longer than the distance in training? I believe 8-16km max is mentioned later so I think its just switching systems!
For me it was just mileage, mileage, mileage. To get that mileage, I dropped my effort level. Lots of easy runs, 1 fast run a week. I built it up to the point 2 or 3 halves a month, with my weekly long run usually over HM distance. First half marathon in 2017 was 2h03m March 2020 1h37m
Hi guys I've finally broken my 1:45:00 half marathon. Im 53 years old. I started running just under a year ago. I've done a few, as in three now. My first one March this year was 1:48:50. My next one was 1:45:32 three weeks ago. I immediately booked another as i knew I could have paced it better. This weekend i ran one in 1:42:33. I'm absolutely buzzing now. You never stop learning how to pace these distances. Every course is different too. Love your videos, keep em coming.
All good advice,I started running at 55yrs of age and did a 1.55half .This year did the bath half and did a 1.40.39 at 57 yrs of age, I basically ran the training plan you've just advised us too use and it works. Good luck to anyone trying to get under 1.45.
Exactly. I have done the distance many times this year the first time on January 4 this year. My best time was 2:11:20 (Garmin Time still no official-Covid) and slowest was 2:27:44. So the dreams of 8:30 miles are just that but very good coaching for younger runners who can perform at that level so all of us can convert upwards or downwards on the sliding ability scale. I totally feel the same way about finish lines not finish times. Cheers!
You have prob seen me commenting about my half marathon coming up on other vids but I’m just so hype for it I’m just watching all ur vids on marathons half marathons everything. Great content!
Good advice thank you guys. I can’t wait for the half’s to be back on and 1.45 is my goal for the next one. I’ve been base building trying the maffetone method for a few months before adding the speed work in later. Feeling good so far! Thanks again 👍🏼
I ran my first half marathon yesterday. I had a plan and then a time goal I wanted to push for. I ended up being over 17 minutes slower! The terrain I trained on was mostly up the roads and sidewalks in my neighborhood and the terrain in my race had sand, soft and uneven grass, things to hurdle and climb over, etc. I wish I knew the route I’d be racing in to try to train in some of those types of areas.
Well done Janet, that sounds like a tough course! You might be able to email the race organisers beforehand to get a course map and to ask about the terrain 😊
All good suggestions. Those progressive runs are hard work. "Fast finish" long runs are another good workout to practice. I've just achieved a sub 1.45 at a race last weekend, so now looking to crack 1.40. More speed work needed! Love the videos. Feeling lucky im in Oz and racing is back on the cards.
The half marathon is probably my favourite distance to race. I did my first one in 2014 in 1:49:29 (after targeting 1:50) and my PB is 1:32:27 in 2017. Training usually goes something like: tempo run + intervals + parkrun + long run for a total of 35-40 km per week. Right now though, 1:45 would actually be a more realistic target for me for my next race, whenever that is :)
My half-marathon goal would be to break 2 hours, I've done 2:05, but that's as close as I've gotten. One half Marathon that turned into a rain fest I did in 2:45, nothing quite takes the fun out of your sails then getting poured on nonstop 😀.
Ive started running properly 2 months ago and im working towards my first half marathon! Every saturday i do my long run and i increase the distance by 2k every other week! today i did 16k !! i never even imagined myself being able to run for that long and that far!! I hope to do my first half marathon in 2 weeks!! Your channel is amazing and i love learning stuff about running from you!!
I'm training for my first half marathon in October. My goal is to finish! As a newer runner, your channel has been SO helpful, and I love the camaraderie amongst the team. Thank you for the awesome content and your joyful, encouraging personalities!
Crucially important content as per usual guys, great work. To all of our The Running Channel friends, please pay very careful attention to the entire video but especially the Recovery chapter beginning at 8:04. I made a lot of mistakes becoming familiar with the Half Marathon distance and had some triumphs too, but the biggest mistake I have made this year was cheating rest and recovery because I was loving being able to run long and dreaming of Marathons. That in connection with trying to mow a lawn after a 15.5 mile run is what yielded a Sesamoid fracture. Very wise content for those willing to accept great advice. Thanks always guys.
I am going to run my first halfmarathon this September - getting closer! Just found out the race has been capped at 2500 runners and my only wish is to not be the last one! My aim is to finish. Somewhere around 2 hours would make me the happiest person ever! Next year I can try if I can go any faster...
I have one coming up in October but I’m happy to complete it as it will be my first - have another next year which I’ll see what I can do better in 😁👍🏻
Ive got mine down to 1:41:41 Pb. That is very quick for me. Think illd have to really concentrate to break that down more. Going for 1:35:00 in the new year so will be watching this video again and again.
Great tips guys thanks. Was hoping to do the virtual GNR up here in Newcastle but I’m working that day (needs to be ran on the Sunday unfortunately) , so will attempt it on the Friday before as a challenge to myself. And 1:45 is my aim!
Ran a 1:47 last year after getting back into running and only training for a few months. Planning to go for a sub 1:30 this October if the race still goes forward. Currently running 60-70 mpw with a 17-20 mile long run every Sunday. Generally most of those miles are zone 2 but sometimes I pick up the pace at the end and go zone 3 and 4 for the last few miles.
Absolutely love the HM as a racing distance. Unfortunately, like the rest of the world, there's not a lot of racing happening in Australia at the moment, but as part of a marathon training block, I did manage to set a HM PB of 1:38:24 a couple of weeks back.
Completed 3 half-marathons in less than this time, but best one was with a cold. Would still love to go under 1:30! Highly recommend the Great Eastern Run in Peterborough as it's very flat.
Interesting video,I just watched another one saying to only run upto a few miles short of half marathon but this one targeting this pace rather than just managing to finish a half is better for me i think.Couldn't do a mile 8 months ago and since july i have run 4 x half marathon distances for myself and was surprised to get under 1:52 at 1st attempt.1st 3 faded badly last 3 miles.last one yesterday under 1:48 and no fading so definately think 1:45 realistic target for me.Parkrun a few times is only time i have run with others around and it dropped my 5k time from high 24mins to low 22mins so hoping for same effect if i get round to entering a proper half.
I am currently training for the 1:45 for the half marathon. This video has all the ingredients I need. Would you be able to set out the different runs in a weekly schedule? When the long run, when the intervals, when the tempo run and when the recovery run. Thank you Anna and Rick. .
When I first started running 6 years ago at age 47, the 8 min mile average was my goal. I was fortunate to make it but it would have been much better if I would have known some of the tips you gave. My current goal is to upgrade to a marathon with a goal of 3:50. Some of these tips will help. For all future hms my goal is to finish under 2 times my age (in minutes). So at 53, the goal is under 106 minutes.
Loving your videos I've come across in my research so far. Subbed! I am currently on a 121 day run streak, and my plan is to tune up for a solo birthday HM this autumn, with my eyes on a solo marathon come spring. Eek.
I achieved this last year at Hampton Court HM (highly recommended if you're looking for a PB by the way). There were 1hr45min pacers there and they really helped me in the last 5k of the race. I went off ahead of them and felt great till about the 16k mark. But of course they caught me in the last quarter of the race and their encouragement really helped me to keep pushing on. to my PB 1:44:21 :)
I would love to know if some study has been done to get that "average breakpoint". If you were an average runner what would be your best achievable time for any particular race after say 1 year of training? That might be 25 mins for 5k, 50 for 10k, 1h40m for half and so on. My PBs are 18m30 (approx, can't remember as it was 26 years ago), 42 min for 10k and 1h37m for half. From my recollection I regularly beat about 20 to 25% of the field so that would put me about halfway between elite and average.
Also, just curious: why are the Brits so concerned with our outdated American imperial system? As a yank myself I’m trying to better utilize the metric system to stay more “international”.
We like to think we use the imperial system but in reality it's a mix (and a mess) Running is in km untill a half or full marathon that's in miles Liquids are in litres, unless your in a pub, ordering beer or for milk Road signs are in miles mostly Weight is mostly in kg unless it's a human and then it's in stone and pounds Hight is in meters and cm unless your measuring a human then its in feet Yeh...... I can see how its confusing to others 😂
Just over a month of running posting it all on strava I did my first half marathon in 1 hour 39 minutes I felt amazing and wasn't tired at all I'm not allowed to do a marathon yet since I'm 16 but I can't wait to do it thanks for the help
Another fantastic video! I managed a 1:45 HM PB in January but never did such big sessions as these so this is really helpful for my future training. Am looking to do a marathon too when possible! What pace would you recommend for marathon pace for somebody who hasn't done one yet? Somewhere around a 3:50 marathon? Thanks!
Thanks for watching! Have you watched our marathon tips videos? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QydYZ-yoUbU.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5AvKRiNo2vY.html
I cracked 1:44 on my first half and i actually didn’t have a training plan at all..i was just running on feel..i also was doin some trail running comps around the same time so I’m sure that help massively!
I was in half marathon training just before everything was cancelled for Covid. I ran my scheduled race day anyway and finished at about 2:16, a 9 minute PB. I think my next half I will try to shave down some more time, though that might not be until next winter for a spring race. Eventually getting under 2 hours would be nice but that is more of an off in the distance goal.
Training to run a virtual half in October, using the Nike training plan. I just want to get over the line with my friend, I fully expect it will take more than two hours.
I'll be running the London Landmark Half Marathon tomorrow and looking forward to a sub 2 hour run and being a Sheffield runner I'm not shy of hill climbing so London will be interesting flat race 🏃♂️🏃♀️🏃🏃♀️🏃♂️🏃♀️🏃🏃♀️🏃♂️💛💚💛💚💛💚
I just started running again after a looong time of stopping from joining funruns and being a couch potato. I just found out about this channel and I find it very informative and motivational at the same time. Keep up the great work and help guys! Thankyou for being an inspiration to others and hope you're all safe throughout these trying times. PS: Just wanna ask for your opinions. Which do you think is the better time to run? Early morning or late afternoon? I would greatly appreciate it if you can share to me your thoughts about this 🙂
Hi Aaron, thanks so much for watching! So glad to have you as part of our community 😊 Everyone has a different preference for when they run and there is no better time, it's just whatever you prefer to do and when you have time to fit in a run 😊 When's your preferred time to run?
@@runningchannel First of all, WOW. I didn't expect you to reply this fast to my comment or even simply notice it but you did and I highly appreciate it! Well, for me, I personally like running on late afternoons though since I'm not that much of a morning person, but I've read in some articles that said running early in the morning is better since the surrounding is fresher, less cars less people, the air is pollution-free, and there's free vitamin D from the sun itself. Which is why I asked for opinions to know more about what other people think about this matter or if it's even a matter in the first place hehe but yeah, I am pretty much satisfied with your thoughts about it and again I really really appreciate your reply. You earned a sub from me. Hoping for more informative and motivational videos to watch from this channel soon. Hope you all stay safe and God bless! 🙏
I am currently training for a half marathon in late September (NZ) and hoping to beat two hours 45! (Ran the same event last year at a little under 3) Thanks for the tips though. I will build those into my training. Have my long run this morning. Will try some intervals in the middle portion.
Done my first ever half marathon today, 1:41:30 was my time. From 20 minutes onwards was largely at a up hill ascent so I’d imagine I can do much better at a flat track.
I’m currently on week 5 of my 12 week garmin coach 1:40 half marathon training and am getting pretty confident that I can do it can’t wait till March 13
@@runningchannel Thanks I have a 3k race today trying to break 12 minutes you should make a video on shorter distance races if you haven’t already you’re reply made my morning
I am looking forward for my first half marathon. My goal is to go sub 2 hours. Been running consistently last 2 years, but my long runs usually dont go over10 km.
This Sunday I ran half marathon less than 1:45(1:42 to be correct). 2 weeks before that the result was 1:47. The main thing, that changed in this 2 weeks - is my weight. Also do not forgot about "сarbohydrate loading" 2 days before start. Really important thing. And one more thing - you should eat something at least once while you run. Gel, or Coca-Cola - something that has a lot of calories.
Time depends on the course as well obviously ... just ran in Mexico and it was very different to the last 21k I done in Clacton on sea ! ( weather aside )
I ran my first half marathon last year with a time of 1hr 50mins 58 seconds. I was aiming for 2hrs, so was quite happy with the time I got but when I realised how close I was the 1hr 45mins, I started getting really disappointed as I could have pushed on a lot harder at the start. It didn’t help that I started between the 2hr pacer and 2hr 15min pacer, as it was quite a slow and sluggish start. I feel if I had started closer to the 1hr 45min pacer it may have given me the incentive to get that time
The Running Channel COVID-19 has kind of messed up all my race plans this year and with that my motivation to train depleted a lot. I went from running 40+ miles a week a couple weeks before lockdown to struggling to run 10 miles a week. I don’t think I could get anywhere near the times I did last year. I have always been race motivated and without races my running has been massively effected. Hopefully I get to run all the races I had planned for this year, next year but it will be like starting from scratch
@@runningchannel thank you! it went better than I thought - ran it this morning in 1:44:24 according to Garmin/Strava, but can't wait to race one soon hopefully! :)
I would love to see some cool training plans for HM sub 2/145 which aren't too involved. Not expecting it to be dead simple, but if you don't have access to a track, or have a Garmin a lot of the plans are impossible
Thanks for the feedback! If you don't have access to a Garmin or a track, you could always use an app on your phone to measure out the distance, for example 1k and then just use a stopwatch on your phone to track your pace. Or phone running apps can track your distance and pace so you can just use your phone rather than a gps watch. Hope that helps!
Yes I do believe you can. In my home state of North Carolina we are home to Krispy Kreme doughnuts and they have a 5K/10k challenge where runners run half the distance, eat 6 doughnuts, and return to finish. I've never done it, but work with a man who has and he claims it sounds better than it feels.
im training up for a half marathon right now, i have noticed that my long runs are going a little longer than what you said im currently doing 28km long runs and planning to go 30km long runs before the race, im only doing this to get over the 2h long run time rather than distance
I’ve only done 2 half marathons and they weren’t any real races, just with myself and last time, I got 1:31:54 so now I wanna go sub 1:25. However, I am running xc now and don’t know when I’ll run another one
can you tell me how much time it is needed to go from 5.45min mile to 4.50min mile .And brother one question I an unable to complete workout at goal pace like repetitions 8×400 in 1.15 I fell dead after 2 or 3 reps.please help brother My prs are My PR are 400m 66 on curvey road 100m 14sec 200m 32 sec 800m 2.38sec 1600m 5.53min on curvey road I can run around 5.40on proper ground i think 5kroad 22.18min 10k 49.36min on road
Hi 😊 It totally depends on your level of training and fitness as to how long it will take you to reach that pace goal. If you're struggling to complete the sessions at that pace we'd suggest trying to dial it down and complete the set more comfortably over a couple of weeks before trying to do it faster again.
One of my trainers is a female of 49, she can run half marathon in 4:30 per kilometer. Don't discard it so easily! But, to be honest, I'm training for my first half marathon at age 45. I'll be very happy if I can get it under 2:00:00 ;), which is about 5:45 /km
My PB on a half marathon last year was 1:36, I'm hoping to get sub 1:30 once events get going again. Heaps of considerations for it but, the course, the weather, how you feel, the crowds etc etc.
im running my first half marathon in 2 weeks. Trying to get 9 minute miles but im super nervous. I know i have the strength and endurance to do it but for me its more of a mindset thing
@@Kelly_Ben haha it went good. I did my first 8 miles 8:20 pace and went out way to fast. I was gassed for the last miles. I ended with an average of 9:20 pace. Definitely a learning experience. How did yours go?
@@RyNite Congratulations!! Even though it wasn't according to plan, that's still a great time!! I had Dr's orders to keep my normally high HR below 155, so I had to keep my speed easy; I averaged about 10:45 running pace. I just got the clearance today to not worry about my HR, so it'll be great to see what I can do next time!
Don't have any idea if this will help but I did too early on so here goes. Do the workouts shown on this channel on your rest days or speed days. Also loads of yoga planks. And try a Magnesium supplement. Worked for me.
