Just came across your video. Perfect timing too. Two questions. Will this have any negative effect on the integrity of the cement or the dirt foundation underneath it? Will it make the concrete base weaker?
@GrowingUpGarden
@GrowingUpGarden 3 года назад
It shouldn’t be a problem as long as you don’t remove to much dirt around the pipe, leaving a void around it. Iv done this a bunch of times and have never had the concrete crack. It also depends on how the concrete was installed. The thicker the less likely it will crack. Also rebar would help it from cracking.

My water spigot is in the middle of my 2 garage doors. And I have a brick retaining wall on one side of the driveway that I need to get over to my flower bed. You started with you had your system up and over your garage door. I am wondering if i run the system from the spigot and over my garage door and up if it will work. Will there be enough pressure to get it up and over?

I have installed a 1' copper pipe under a 18 foot driveway. It took me 3 attempts because the pipe went way to deep on the other side. Just make sure when you start feeding the pipe in you are not lifting it up. That will make the tip go deeper in the ground on the other side. It needs to be parallel to the driveway. Dig your starter trench 6"deeper than the finished depth so you can push down if needed to make adjustments. 30' might be a challenge because of the friction between the dirt and pipe. You could reach a point where you can no longer push the pipe in with you hands. Make sure the jet nozzle is slightly bigger than the pipe. This should help with the friction. It all depends on the ground. If you have lots of rock and roots this could be a challenge. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

@GrowingUpGarden

I am not sure on that. I've had them in the garden for 5 years. The black pipe has done well. the dippers are another story. I usually have to replace a few because they break or get damaged easily when working in the garden.

Right. It may not be a coincidence that the old irrigation pipe follows the crack in the driveway. I appreciate the video, but it’s undeniable that blasting water under a walkway or driveway is going to undermine it somewhat and create a weak spot. If you have a newer concrete driveway and are using this method, it may be best to come back and put a shallow sawcut joint in the concrete above the run, so that when it does inevitably crack under 1-2 tons of vehicle weight, it will do it discreetly along a straight joint.

What is the likelihood of bad cracks developing in the concrete after you wash away the load bearing soil support.
@GrowingUpGarden
@GrowingUpGarden Год назад
I’ve done this a lot over the years on my own homes and I’ve had no problem with cracks. Your only washing away enough soils for the pipe to fit and if you take out more than expected on the ends you can re pack the soil.

I’m going to pour a new driveway. How deep or what is the depth should a conduit go from the surface? And should it be laid underneath the rebar? I’m also building a new brick walkway in my front yard. How deep should a conduit go for irrigation drip lines? I’m not sure if I want to have drip lines or pvc for sprinklers for the conduit under the brick walkway so should I install 2 conduits if I want to have both drip and spray?
@GrowingUpGarden
@GrowingUpGarden Год назад
You should put them 18”to 24” depending on where your frost line is. I live in California near sacramento so I don’t have to worry about the lines freezing in the ground. If you live where It get super cold you need to look up your local codes and see how deep the frost line is. I would run ¾ pvc schedule 40 under the driveway and your walkways. You can tap you drip system into it at the surface.
@ginaalvarado1496
@ginaalvarado1496 Год назад
Thanks! I live in Pasadena, CA so it’s not cold. So i would go 18” deep? Is 3/4 inch diameter big enough to run irrigation line through it? What if I want to use pvc for sprinklers? Do I run another pvc pipe through the conduit or do I use the conduit to attach more pvc pipe to the opposite ends?

Galvanized steel pipe not copper. You can buy 4 ft lengths and join them with unions as you progress under the driveway. You can put a PVC cap with holes for the water jet or smash the end to a flat end.
@GrowingUpGarden
@GrowingUpGarden 6 лет назад
Iv put 15 feet of copper under a driveway using this method. I don’t think you would want to use unions under ground they are way bigger than the pipe. It would get hung up under ground. Unless you meant coupler. Why would you use galvanized pipe? Every time I work on an old house we’re taking out the galvanized pipe and replacing it with new copper. Galvanized pipe will eventually rust inside the pipe closing it off so the water flow will be restricted and the outside of it will corrode to underground
@idadho
@idadho 6 лет назад
Galvanized pipe clogs because it collects hard water minerals more than it rusts. Couplers would work fine. I get the two terms backwards. Copper will corrode faster. It is for inside plumbing. Underground copper has a blue plastic insulation on it (pricey) Galvanized pipe will last 25 to 30 years. I've been plumbing under concrete since the 70s. I'd use PVC anyway. Never copper.
@GrowingUpGarden
@GrowingUpGarden 6 лет назад
I think my house has pvc form the main to the house then it switches to copper. I think copper is fine to direct burry unless you have some corrosive soil that causes it to corrode faster than normal. How long will the blue plastic insulated copper last under ground?
@idadho
@idadho 6 лет назад
Since the blue coated copper does not make contact with the ground and it is type K, it should last longer than anything but poly or protected PVC/CPVC. It is common for copper to start where the water supply enters the house. There are a lot of causes of corrosion. Google copper pipe underground.

I have a low spot in the driveway that always accumulates water but I'd be concerned about running water underneath the driveway like that and causing a void in the earth and then causing the concrete to crack under the weight of a vehicle
@GrowingUpGarden
@GrowingUpGarden 2 года назад
Just install the pipe deeper underneath the drive. It shouldn’t be a problem. It doesn’t take out that much soil around the pipe.

you will find if you drill a small hole in the end cap and one hole in the pipe at the at the edge of the cap on a sharp angle back to you on 2 sides will clean the hole out a lot better and faster and the pipe will go in a lot easer, this is what the high presser wash trucks have on there hose to cleaning out sewer pipes from in your home, the don't use a pipe just there stiff hose with a tip on it with the 3 holes, one spraying forward an 2 spraying back, I put sand pints in the ground at camps about 10 feet up from the water edge of the lake, and have the steel pipe connected to the sand point and I have sections of 1/2" steel pipe hooked up to a 1" gas water pump and I put the 1" pipe next to the sand point pipe and push them both down together by hand, the water test come back totally safe to drink. I only do it were it is sand or fine dirt, I have never tried it in black dirt,

first of all, no such thing as schedule 20 pvc pipe. It's class 200 and schedule 40 the most common. a 11/2 inch galvanized pipe with reducer and cap, sledge hammer and a little bit of labor willdo the trick with no structural integrity loss.

Lol... that Crack ain't from a tree.... I've done thousands of bores, that Crack is from bore its self must be 1' per 1" in diameter bore, so a 1" bore must be at a 1" depth 2" at 2' etc... all that water just displaces the very soil that supports the concrete.... that concrete will now crack... just a matter of when
