As a kid, I ran on my full foot. When I started running track in high school, I knocked five seconds off my 400 times by transitioning to toe landings. So--it might be healthier to land on the full foot, but it's definitely not the fastest way to run.
You're correct. But the 400m has a fast pace. It's almost a sprint. So, it's toes for spead, otherwise full foot. Most people would not run long distance on toes. No point until perhaps a sprint to the finish, and it can be tough on the calves etc.
Guess what? I used the running on toes to take on the mile, and actually was winning that event pretty regularly, unlike the 400. I'll grant you, many of the milers were not exclusive toe runners. @@toby9999
