I was going to pay hundreds of dollars on laminate to cover my ugly sanded floors but now I know I can just stain and lacquer it’s such a relief.

beeing in the business 55 plus yrs. you never go 90 degrees to the boards. The proper way is on a 20 to 35 dehree angle both left and right then with the same direction of the floor. Going across the boards the sander will move up and down with the cupping.

You should show this video to a Lagler specialist and watch them cringe when you run the Hummel at a 90 degree angle. 22.5 to 40 degrees is the max you should run to get the boards flat. The cross-grained marks are so prominent in the stain and in the finish coats. 24 to 150 grit is great. Typically what should be done is 40/60/80/100/120.

I was looking for this comment. I've only seen cross cutting done professionally once, on a house where they didn't want the floors' replaced but had nearly 1/4" deep rot to be removed. So cross cut, but not 90 degree, only 45... floor came out amazing, I'm still mind blown by it.

Great video! Looking to do the same in Australia with an old house. In the first part of the video you showed wedging together the boards. Is this only for repairing some boards or were all boards lifted, wedged and nailed back in? Thanks

I have been trying to find a video just like this. We ripped out all the old carpeting and flooring over the old floorboards non are damaged and looking to do this to all of the flooring in my house and all we have are floor boards. Why does anyone comment 🤷‍♂️ Do you only approve of comments along the lines of, or that affirm your own views? What they have done to me? What you've done to me? Why do you instantly jump to the conclusion my comment (that suggests finding other videos), is hostile? The men in this video, Sanding this floor, have done an absolutely terrible job. The results are extremely poor - and the methods employed are haphazard and lazy. I can tell you this for certain, because refinishing wooden floors is my business - and has been for more than 18 years. If I'd competed this job - and left results like this as a finish, I'd expect not to be paid.

@@jacquelynharper3659 I have commented on the main thread 😉 I was simply advising you to seek alternative videos on how to sand floors, because you appear to be under the impression this video is a guide to follow in your own home. It is not! ... If you follow the example of this video with a hire standard sander, not only will you end up with extremely poor results, but you may damage the boards beyond repair. The man in the video is using a lagler hummel - and even with that machine, he hasn't managed to remove the lines he's made by Sanding across them. If you would rather argue about semantics rather than take advice, go ahead and sand your floorboards as shown here 🤷‍♂️ Good luck 🤞

Hey - great video!! Could I ask what you would advise using on a recently sanded pine floor? I don’t know whether I’m better to use a stain or a varnish. I’m worried there may be slight scuff/sanding marks and have read that staining will highlight these. In addition regardless of whether I choose a stain or a varnish should I use a laquer? Thanks for your help and the video was great!!

Any tips for when there is a suspended floor and the gaps are to a void. How to fill said gaps ?

I think they’ve done a great job. Things I would do different; I understand going against the grain to really get into the wood, but in my opinion I would never do that, it my cause too much damage to the wood and if your not careful vibration marks through the sander. Roughest sandpaper grit I would use is 40, anything more then that it will rip into the boards too much. I’ll also apply the stain with a rag not a roller.

That’s only the first run. On the second sanding run he goes with grain using a finer grit. He explained that the first pass is to even out the boards and remove deep scratches.

Looks like a lot of divots on the left of the room where the sander has been bounced. You only see this on the long shot of the room and the close ups all look flat which had me questioning what I was seeing but it’s visible in several shots

40grit very coarse then 60grit less coarse then 40 80grit less coarse than 60 and so on and so on 40 grit first

That's what I got taught at trade school. Diagonal first cut, then opposite angle diagonally with a higher grit, then up and down the board with highest grit. Having said that if it works for him, then he may as well keep doing it.

Don't forget to countersink your nails before sanding or they'll rip your sanding belts off.

Clearly at the end ,the spaces between the fllorboards are not filled flush. The voids will fill with whatever falls on the floor once in real use: dust. dirt, spilled food, pet hair. The resin/sawdust mix was obviously incompetently appled.

Looks great although make sure the customers puts in insulation (semi rigid preferably) between joists underneath if it's ground floor, otherwise it could get mighty draughty in the winter.

You guys.. sanding perpendicular to the planks is a terrible idea. The drum will roll with any cupping in the planks instead of planing. A 45 degree pass is the way to plane

This is horrific! I'm surprised on three fronts really. 1) You chose this as an example of your work to show the wider public. 2) You've made a tutorial video on a subject you're clearly lacking knowledge - and practical skills in. 3) You were paid by the client, for what looks worse than most DIY attempts I've come across 👎

The opening shots show how terribly this floor has been done. The colour and sheen are beautiful but the avoidable damage to the boards explains why elsewhere on RU-vid this video is an example of a "How not to". My 100 year old floors have original saw marks, but that may be "character". Here, the blemishes are obviously caused by the sander.

Never cross sand at 90°, 45° maybe little more. Just setting yourself up for go back and fix it.also no such thing as a level floor, not that he said it, but I've heard quite a few guys say that. Best you can get is smooth and even. Only so much wood can be sanded off.
