I saw a girl on Instagram buy clearance Christmas candy, specially kisses and peanut butter cups (the ones that are wrapped in green and red foil), then she separated the green for st. Patrick’s day and the red for Valentine’s Day! What a genius idea!!

I live near a number of different ethnic grocery shops. I find dry goods like beans, grains, herbs and more at a far better price than a regular grocery store! I also go to Amish markets in my area and get bulk baking supplies and its amazing. I like doing this kind of shopping to make my budget go so much further and support small local family owned businesses.

Absolutely 💯 I support a couple of family owned local stores. One carries produce meats and frozen goods I enjoy, another has dairy, dried goods and freezer goods as well. I Absolutely 💯 % would rather put my money in the hands of a local neighbor salesman and our neighboring farmers.

I would like to add a friendly reminder to everyone to still be kind to store clerks. My family owns a grocery store and people can act as though we are personally trying to gouge them with the prices. The reality is the vendors set the prices for goods and if the store is part of an association (which most are) the association sends crews to come and “stage” the store every few years. They closely manage the placement of goods and sales. I’m not even remotely saying that Angela has suggested or encouraged poor treatment of grocery store employees. I have just experienced firsthand how frugality can become an “us vs them” mentality. Let’s all be kind AND frugal. 😊 Also, I love your videos and content. I have learned so much from your experience!

I'm retired and have a lot of time. I do self-serve for small orders or, for large orders, pick a cashier who has a few people ahead of me. That gives me time to unload, watch for correct scanning and exchange a few pleasant words with the employee. It is much more time-productive to have mistakes corrected before the transaction closes.
@MLC.43

I would also add to utilize curbside pickup orders. I have found that by not strolling through the aisles, even when I go with a list, I still end up finding things I didn’t actually need but looked good. With curbside pickup, I order just what I intend to get and nothing else. No temptations.

A new trend I've noticed recently (here in the UK) is that it's not necessarily cheaper anymore to buy a bigger pack or multi pack. Often now it's cheaper to buy e.g. 4 single cans of chopped tomatoes than a multi pack of 4 or 2 smaller packs of pasta than 1 with double the amount! Crazy! (I often wonder how many people won't notice it. In the past you could fairly much rely on bulk working out cheaper per unit.)

Same thing in the US. A recent example I noticed (I ALWAYS check cost by volume)…a 2-pack of Philadelphia Cream cheese blocks was MORE than the cost of buying 2 single blocks of the same cream cheese. We really have to pay attention out here for sure.

We raise our own pigs and cows for meat. And have chickens for eggs. It is not cheaper, at least for us. By the time we pay for power, feed, vet/ meds they are about the same. We do it for the quality and the experience for our kids. This video was great. It takes so much effort to intentionally watch your money when it comes to groceries.

Overall good tips, but I’ll go to the mat for meat, eggs, and good animal fats being the most beneficial things to fuel your family with all day long. In our home we buy meat and eggs first, then veggies and fruit. Good fats and organic flour and good honey to make our sourdough sandwich bread come next. Everything else comes dead last when prioritizing the grocery budget. Usually it just means we buy very little processed food or treats. I make treats and snacks if we have the ingredients for them, but the meat keeps us full well so we don’t really need snacks.

Lots of very practical tips. I would add, make friends with the employees at your favorite stores. They will let you know when they are marking things down. Day after holidays, particularly Christmas, are my favorite! I always buy a couple boxes of lights, because I always need some come the next year because lights just die while stored away. I also like to grab candy canes (they always have exp dates over a year away), white tissue paper if I need it, and other staples. And if I have something I’ve wanted to add to my collection, I simply wait and look for it after the holiday. The next year when I pull out my Christmas stuff, I get so excited for my new things. 😊

I worked at a grocery store for almost 10 years and this is so true. I would also add that you can order things through the store too. If you have an item that you want a large amount of talk to the manager. They can order it for you. If a sale item is out of stock ask for a rain check. Frozen veggies and fruit are usually (not always) budget friendly vs fresh. Knowing when your store stocks their shelves is good to know if you want the newest scale items, freshest produce or deli items. Items they want you to buy will be the easiest to get to. Always check for a cheaper option usually found in the aisle. Check prices in the app or online. I went in store to buy a something and it was much cheaper on the app and because I checked the honored the price and n the app. Also some store will let you get a discount if you have bought the item with in a month of the scale.

I’ve used the Flipp app for years and love it. It’s also very handy in stores that have a price match policy. Where I live (Ontario), the sales start on Thursdays, so Wednesday is actually the worst day to shop for food (the foods that were on sale are all out of stock by then). Great video ❤

Good tips! One comment... Meat is THE most nutritious item that you are feeding your family. Compare the nutrients of a serving of meat with a serving of kale and even the least expensive cut of meat runs circles around the kale. Plus the nutrients in meat are much more bioavailable than the nutrients in vegetables. Plus people don't get enough protein. And most importantly the pasta and potatoes and rice give us practically zero bioavailable nutrients. So in my humble opinion you may save money having meatless days or serving less meat at a meal. But are you not getting enough nutrients by doing that? Isn't it worth spending money on the things that actually give our bodies what we need? We aren't just eating because we like the taste or to fill our stomachs. We are eating to nourish our bodies.

@@musikluver Hi there. This is a friendly reply. I am not trying to debate with you. you gave me something to consider. Can I give you something to consider? You can Google "what toxins are in legumes." They do contain quite a lot of toxins. Eating them on occasion is fine for most people, but eating them a lot can lead to long term health issues. So absolutely eat them if you enjoy them. But please do be aware that they aren't really that good for you. They can cause gut issues, inflammation, harm your body's ability to absorb nutrients and much more. For meat, there are some issues depending on how the livestock was raised and fed and some issues depending on how it is cooked. But there aren't any toxins in meat Also perhaps consider that humans evolved over millions of years and have been in largely the same DNA as we are now for about 250k years. Humans have always eaten meat. And humans were able to become the strong and intelligent species that we are today because of eating meat. My feeling is, if we are evolved to eat meat, how could it possibly be bad for us. We have only been eating the legumes for about 10k years, but they haven't ben a significant factor in our diet until about the last 100 years.
@musikluver
@musikluver 4 месяца назад
@@olivia8979 I 100% agree that where and how something is grown contributes to how less good it can be for your system. In Canada and the States I'm sure there's a lot of toxins in things (especially legumes and veggies) that aren't great for our systems. But it's not the same everywhere and also preparation has a lot to do with it as well. Thanks for reaching me something:)

Flipp is great, used to be better though. It used to have a slider at the bottom where you could set the % off and see all of the deepest sales in each flyer. Sadly they took that away, I'm guessing because it made it too easy for us to find the good stuff. I do like being able to enter my list and having it offer up all of the options in all of the flyers then I could figure out what was the best stor to shop at to fulfill my list. You can also enter a watch list of items to have it flag when there are deals on those items.

I always appreciate ideas in this area, Angela! 🤗 LADIES, do any of you ever figure out how much a meal costs per person in your grocery budget (like budget divided by days of month divided by number of family members divided by three meals a day)? I’m currently over $2 per person per meal, but $3 per person per meal would give me more freedom, if we choose to increase the budget to cover that. I would LOVE to know the average per person per meal for other families, to know if I’m too tight, too lax, or just right. 😉

It’s difficult to check items as they are being scanned while you are still unloading your cart. If there is another person with you it helps but if you’re alone it’s hard. A tip for someone that doesn’t want to do less meat is do less snacks if the main meals are important for you. We eat a lot of meat in our house but we had to trade out some things for it and we buy only in bulk at a Costco or BJs or when Aldi has a great price. Yeah, Young children need protein, growing youth need protein, Women of child bearing age need protein, working men need protein, the elderly especially need protein As your body utilizes protein, less efficiently than when you are young. Don’t get me started on zinc and iron that aren’t bio available in plant protein sources but are available in animal protein sources. I’d give up everything else before I gave up meat for my children and husband and my pregnant self. The mortgage gets paid, the utilities get paid, Money for the church is put aside and then meat is purchased. Those are the priorities For us.

Walmart marks items up to put them in their clearance aisles. I used to be able to get amazing deals on kids clothes to donate for kids who have been emergently removed from $ex abuse situations. Their clothes are taken for forensics so they need new items. You can’t find decent deals like you used to be able to. Recently I had a clearance item at a grocery store. I watched the cashier ring it up, look at the item, then the price on the register and completely ignore the bright yellow large clearance price. I called her out on it but my husband had already paid so I had to stop at customer service to get my refund. She knew exactly what she had done but didn’t want to clear it to have to rescan it. I was loading the belt and couldn’t see the screen until it was too late. She was my age (60’ish) and clearly knew better. 🙄🤬
