Learn how to seal painted pots and why this process is so important
I use this simple process to seal all my painted terracotta pots to keep the paint and my artwork looking good year after year.
The key is to seal the clay pot inside and out to prevent water from seeping from the soil through the clay and cracking your artwork.

Thank you Miss Lady. I really needed this tutorial. I waited until I turned 50 to develop a love for crafting and have painted a few pots without this knowledge and the paint was peeling. Hello, thank you for your video Sarah! I am interested in painting a bunch of terracotta pots that I already have for succulents, but I already have the plants/dirt in them. I do not want to harm the plants with any paint seeping through the terracotta and of course cannot seal the inside of the pot at this stage. Do you think it would be okay if I could use a sealer on the outside of the pot and then spray paint it without any issue (harm to plants or peeling?) I plan on covering the rim of the pot with painter's tape and the plants themselves with a plastic bag so that not paint or sealer has any chance of getting on the plant. Big thanks in advance for your advice in this case! Any thoughts you may have are much appreciated!

I just painted a bunch of pots with acrylic paint and then thought about sealing them somehow! So I didn't spray them before I started, but I think I can still spray the inside and out to seal, and see how they do! Thanks for the tips

What is your technique for applying the sealant before painting? I have 6 pots that I want to paint, and I was able to seal the insides of the pots and saucers beautifully. However, when I tried to seal the outsides, they bubbled up and look terrible. Any suggestions would be so appreciated! Thank you.

Wish I would’ve see this before I painted the pots! I knew I had to seal after but not before. They are going to be indoors tho, and are just a starting point for small plants. Do you think it’s ok to seal after being painted or should I start over? Thanks for a great tutorial

I think shellac would be best to use for any edible plant (herbs for example) as it is food grade.

I prefer acrylic paint but you can use any type you like.

So…if you already have plants and dirt inside a terracota pot, could you just spray and seal the outside? I don’t have any paint or anything but I want to experiment and see if my cacti’s roots will do better with a porous pot vs a non-porous pot (sealed terracota, plastic or glazed).

I looked this up after I painted a cat planter I got from five below in a kit that came with cheap paint... and it’s not in a terra-cotta color, so I don’t exactly know what kind of material it is... but it’s probably ceramic or something like that, so I just hope that the paint will stay without a first layer of sealer under the paint...

You can make your own drainage holes by using a 1/4 diameter MASONRY drill bit. put a small piece of painters tape over the area to be drilled (this keeps the bit from sliding if it's glossy finish) then slowly drill with the bit going in reverse. (the position you would set the bit to remove a screw from a wall.) Go slowly as you don't want to crack your pot. I have converted many fancy mixing bowls from thrift store into pretty pots. Good Luck!

Yes they could. However, Mod Podge is a pretty good sealer if you plan to keep the pot inside.

I use Rust oleum paint too, typically the Painters Touch 2x coverage. It's in most stores and comes in a lot of colors.

I've been using pots sealed like this for years without any noticeable side effects to the plant. However I can't say that there are no effects.

This is not food safe, if you want them to be decorative go for it but not to eat on.

Would the sealer on the inside of the pot cause it to not be porous? My plants need the drainage but I want to paint them.

Correct, the sides would not be porous. This technique allows you to protect a decorated pot but removes the benefit of a porous terracotta pot.

The spray that I used is a gloss spray so it does make it shiny. However, you can buy this in a satin finish. It may even come in a matte finish. This will reduce the shine.

It depends on the paint you used. But I still would seal the inside and out over your paint and you should be fine.

I painted one a year and a half ago and mine is still going strong even though I didn’t seal it. I used acrylic paint and not spray paint but idk. Just spray it on the inside and out. I’m sure that’ll be sufficient

I would use the painted pot for decorative purposes only. But you could always put a smaller pot into the painted pot and it would be fine.

I am using clay pots for a kitchen herb garden. The pots look great when they are new but soon water mark and becoe ugly. I am looking to seal them on the inside but worry about the food safety fctor of using something like this. Do you know if the sealer that you recommend is safe for my application?

That was my question too and it turns out that brand of spray paint has lead in it. No bueno for edible plants you want to grow in containers. There is paint made specifically for terracotta pots. You can find it on amazon, walmart, michaels, et al.
