HOW TO SEE A TORNADO ON RADAR

Simple answers to... How do you see a tornado on radar and how do you know if a tornado is coming toward you?
When the cross section of precipitation makes a hook shape, or a hook echo, we can infer strong rotation and possibly a tornado. Precipitation is revealed in the "reflectivity" mode on radar apps.
REFLECTIVITY MODE
In Reflectivity mode, some of the beam emitted from radar is reflected back to the radar by rain, snow or hail and detected. That’s why we call it an echo.
The greatest reflectivity comes from hail stones displayed in pinks and purples and the smallest the more tiny hydrometeors like light rain and drizzle in yellow or green.
VELOCITY MODE
Not all tornadoes form a hook echo o radar. That's were "Velocity" mode comes in. Velocity mode is like X-ray vision.
It’s a POWERFUL tool for detecting circulations within a storm.
Red indicates wind moving away from the radar, and green toward the radar. A relatively small concentrated area of inbound and outbound stronger velocities coming together indicates strong rotation and possibly a tornado. Together, Reflectivity and Velocity are powerful tools for detecting tornadoes.
HEADS UP!
Tornadoes often change direction and the scan you are viewing could be several minutes old. Also factor in, the circulations depicted on radar can be several kilometers aloft. And the tornadoes position at the surface can be displaced as it bends diagonally through the storm.
Many radar apps like Radarscope have a storm tracking or cell motions option. You can also get a good idea of what direction the storm is going by playing the animation loop.
LIGHTNING DATA
Some radar apps also offer lightning data. Most of the time lightning data is a good tool for tracking lightning and predicting storm intensity. I assumed they are all lightning data is detecting cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, but to be honest, there are many times when I’m positioned in a sea of would-be lightning strikes according to the data, and I’ve observed no CG’s near my area. So perhaps they were false signals or large intra-cloud discharges were detected? I’m currently looking into this mystery.
TORNADO 2018
On May 1st, I witnessed my first tornado of 2018 near Salina Kansas. Watch how I use radar to track the tornado.

Yeah there were a bunch today. There were big blobs of multiple supercells blended together. It's tough to find tornadoes in there with just velocity. It's tough when the storm is moving quick and has a bunch of things that kinda look like rotation in it but aren't. It's just looking at pixelated colors so it's real hard to figure it out. I'm learning this stuff and astrophotography by myself cause I don't really got anyone to teach me about the things I'm interested in so it's super hard.

This is definitely an informative video that people should see! I've learned a little bit about reading velocity radar, and with the recent reports that tornado lead times appear to be decreasing, it might be pertinent for people to check radar on their own and be prepared. Even if you aren't an expert at it, knowledge is power! There are times I've thought I've seen telling velocity radar signatures (and even reflectivity signatures) that later got warned...sometimes too late, I thought. Nevertheless, I hope everyone has a safe 2018 weather-wise! Look up, look out, and know what's happening around you! I'm up in MD, where we get some chaotic storm fluctuations due to mountains and things, so I never know what to expect.
@abbynormal4740
@abbynormal4740 2 года назад
@Bunny Baker Totally agree with you about the importance and value of learning to better understand and interpret radar. I've been a trained local spotter for over 30 years but had to become a stationary (i.e. homebound) spotter 7 years ago for health reasons. Being out when severe weather is likely or imminent without constantly using a rescue inhaler and/or nebulizer is not an option 😷 (and is a most inefficient manner of storm chasing), so I actually DO have to "try this at home". 😄 Relying so much on forecasts, outlooks and radar, I've also learned to pick up on various radar signatures and get Hubby, the furbabies and myself to the basement well before any warnings were issued or sirens sounded on several occasions. Knowing how to read the signs of when all is clear versus ongoing hazardous conditions is also invaluable around here because of the annoying and confusing practice of sounding sirens so briefly and intermittently. All too often, the sirens start early (which is great) but go silent at the peak of danger before starting back up as the storm has just passed. 🙄🤷🤦 If it weren't for local police driving around town with sirens, folks could mistakenly think we were clear when the tornado sirens go silent. But even in our little town, you can't hear police sirens from the other end of town during a storm. Fortunately, we've only had several close calls but no direct hits in living memory.

What radar apps do you use? I can't seem to find any that provide this level of detail.

Steven Abney I'm fairly certain he's using RadarScope. It costs money (~$10) but it's much better than the standard free apps

He Uses radar scope, its like $10 a year for a subscription though i think there is a free version without as many detailed features but im not shure

Absolutely great video, this actually made more sense for us RadarScope users. I've had some issues really understanding these differences and always relied on the "classic hook echo" on the radar. Thanks so much Hank for this great video it all makes perfect sense!!

Going After A Tornado In A Low Visibility Environment Is An Excellent Way To Get Your Self Killed! - Pecos Hank 2019
@P_RO_
@P_RO_ 6 лет назад
You da man! An excellent explanation of the most important parts of interpreting radar and how to get more from it than most people do. As an old hand with Skywarn and Ham radio I knew this but you explained it better than what I got. Key to anyone using radar is to remember it's scan time- what you see is never real-time and a lot can happen in a few minutes. If you watch a storm's direction and speed and know when the screen you're seeing was imaged, then you can have a pretty good idea where it's at right now. Hope the season picks up soon with some photogenic tornadoes. You and Mike O. get the best shots of all and everything else waits when I get an upload notification from either one of you- KUDOS!

This video actually helped me save a friend of mine from a lot of panic and anxiety. A tornadic storm was moving through their area and their local stations weren't giving enough information on the tornado, so I hopped on RadarScope and used what I learned here to keep them updated on the warned areas as well as where the rotation was. Thank you, Hank! You've been saving lives and you've helped me save a friend's sanity!
