I tried to do all this on my mower following the D110 manual. Took over four times as long as this video. His instructions are exactly correct and very well organized. I’d rate this video five stars out of five. How I wish I’d seen it long ago. Thanks for the best maintenance instructions!

Excellent video. I bought a S100 from Lowe's this year an didn't get an owners manual. This video helps a lot! I had no idea about all the grease fittings. Now I feel like I know exactly what needs to be done to get the mower ready for each season. The deck leveling instructions can be used now, because I think I'm already getting some uneven cuts. Lowe's probably didn't adjust that when they put the unit together. Thanks for posting this.

? Making sure the oil was filled properly I’ve noticed when engaging PTO a large amount of black smoke came out from right side of engine. Any suggestions.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines 4 месяца назад
Black smoke normally means to much gas. Maybe your running with the throttle in the choke position or the choke is sticking in the on position. Also too much oil is not good. Make sure the oil level is between the dots on the oil dip stick.
@theoverlanddisciple
@theoverlanddisciple 2 года назад
Great video. I believe I have a bad vacuum issue with mine and I just replaced my pump. I noticed it doesn't go toward the front of the motor to the cover, but to the oil dipstick. Does that mean I could get a no pump issue if low on oil? We need a video for just fuel pump troubleshooting on this odd motor!

Why do you think you have a bad bad vacuum issue? Why did you replace the fuel pump?

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines no start issue, verified spark at plug, changed fuel filter. Noticed fuel didn't look like it was flowing. Arrow is in right direction replaced fuel pump, still nothing. Not sure if I just got a bad pump but I can suck/blow trace amounts of gas through it.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines 2 года назад
Check to see if you have a electric fuel shut off valve under the carburetor. You will know you have one if you see a cylinder looking round object with a wire sticking out of it under the carburetor which is below the air filter. To check this you must have the emergency brake on and listen very carefully turn the key from off to on and listen for a click at the solenoid. keep turning the key often on and you should hear that click if you do not you may have bad wiring or a bad fuel shut off solenoid. Fuel pumps hardly ever go bad. Also check to make sure your fuel cap vent is clear
@theoverlanddisciple
@theoverlanddisciple 2 года назад
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines thanks I'll check those things. I did have the electric fuel shut off and I pulled it off and removed the black tip to ensure fuel would flow, but I never saw anything. I kept trying to "prime" it so to speak and the motor locked up! I did hear a loud bang, so I'm sure I slung a rod. May be the end for this old gal! 🤣
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines 2 года назад
Pull the spark plug out and see if the engine will crank over make sure the ignition wire is away from the spark plug hole and if fuel comes out of the hole then you have a Carburetor issue. If nothing comes out of the hole then you may have a locked motor.

I use a very light oil 0/20and do not over oil it. My opinion, It is important to oil the pre-filter so it will collect and keep the dust particles from entering the engine.

Hi Tom, thanks for watching and commenting. The blade nut being so tight is from many using power tools to tighten. I was showing the easiest way to brake them loose.
@georgesimpson3113
@georgesimpson3113 Год назад
A drill with a wire wheel will clean up the blade nuts before you try to remove them. I sharpen blades b4 installing. Clean and/or replace the w-ring at the oil drain. Blow the air filter out from the inside out. I run much less air in the tires for a smother ride. Set the deck @ 3.5 or 3.75 and slide a 2x4 under each side of the deck, up. Then just lower/raise the deck to snug. You are using the 3.5" side of the wood as a feeler gauge to set the deck. If you use the deck gauges, just buy two and use them both at the same time. It will same time and hassle of moving around. (I've got 4, but that's me.) Oh, and if you use long enough 2x4s, when removing or installing the deck, use the wood laying down the 1.5" way so you don't have to lift the deck to hook the hangers. Also a little easier to drag deck around. Good vid!

If it is coming off when you are disengaging the belt? 90% of the time you are either missing belt covers? A little reminiscent of the long lever arms that were on the walls at the US Army Anniston Depot where tanks were manufactured and repaired in WWII, and the work force was 90% women. You describe a transmission failing. The only thing you can try is a new transmission belt (check idler pulley too) and if that doesn't work the transmission is bad. If the transmission fan looks to be new and someone tried to repair a bad transmission at some point, you may have purchased the machine with a bad transmission. You wouldn't know it was bad until you ran it on your hills.

Technically every nut, bolt and yes the spark plug has a has a torque. When you install a spark plug you just need to make sure the when you get to the crush washer turn it another 1/2 to 3/4 turn and you should be good.

I have a rattling noise when I take by foot off the left brake pedal on my John Deere LA110. What do you think I should check first? I thought it may have some to do with the Hydrostatic drive belt belt pullies. My mower is about 16 years old but it pretty good shape. Thanks in advance!

@JohnsonsSmallEngines 2 года назад
Hi Mike, you are correct. If your left pedal which is the clutch/brake pedal shakes a little bit or you do hear a rattle of some sort. That usually means you either have a bad spot in the transmission drive belt that’s making it rattle or pulleys that have worn funny through the years or worst case scenario you may have a transmission drive pulley that is now loose and rattling around. All which can be repaired. I would first look at your drive pulleys where the drive belt runs and replace if necessary. If you’ve never replaced the drive belt or the drive pulleys in 16 years I would say it’s due. You can also check the rear transmission drive pulley by engaging the emergency brake (All while the engine is OFF)get your hand up near the pulley and try to move it up and down. If there is a lot of play up and down your transmission drive pulley may need to be replaced. But I have not done many of the transmission (itself)drive pulley through 30 years of business.

For the spark plug, I think you are saying, "30 thousandths", but you are pointing at the Gap tool and it is saying 0.76? I'm confused!
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines 2 года назад
Yes it is 30 thousandths and because I have it marked on both sides the Millimeters is 0.76

Thank for the kind comment. I think the only difference may be you have a twin cylinder engine from Briggs and Stratton. The spark plugs should be champion RC12YC and the air filter will be different. Please click on the like button, subscribe and tell your friends about my channel to help it grow. Hi, after replacing both spindles, blades and idler pulleys and after attaching to tractor I noticed that little 1" square pulley brake pad on the ground, is it worthwhile to jb weld it back on or just chunk it in the tool box? There's what appears to be 2 10mm brass adjustment nuts on that bar that runs to each drive pulley any insights on how close that bar without the pad should be from the pulley? Do those 10mm nuts tend to back out over time? Thanks for the video.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines 2 года назад
I would just replace the brake. JB weld will not work. I personally tighten the 10mm nuts so the brake is just working when you disengage the mower deck. Then when the brakes wear you will need to back off the 10mm nuts to allow the brake to seat on the pulley to perform there job. The nuts are locking nuts and they should not loosen where you adjust them. Please give this video a like/thumbs up, subscribe and tell your friends about my channel to help it grow. It would be greatly appreciated
