I have to thank you with profound humility. You have given me the encouragement to challenge myself and learn about how to keep my 2002 Chevy Silverado LS alive for another 20 years. I only have 106,650 miles on the factory engine. I have been with this truck since i was 14 years old. It was purchased by my Father on 10/2001 as a new 2002 release. I have read stories about families owning and maintaining these vehicles for 1,000,000 plus miles. I think there’s a family currently working on 2,000,000 miles. They’re horses and horses will live as long as you take care of them. My father gifted it to me for my 30th birthday. Better than anything I have ever received. And not because free car. No. Because there is a sentimental nature to this gift and it’s my primary goal to keep it in its best condition. Show him that I actually value something he cherished. When he gifted it the truck only had 88,800 miles. Nearly the same as the truck I wish he would have given me. That was a 1985 off the lot modified 3/4 ton Chevrolet Silverado Sand Beige Single cab with leather and woodwork interior. It was a gem. He traded that in… that was a sad day. It only had 85,450 miles on it in 2001. Chevy truly is Like A Rock. And funny thing is to this day both my father and myself still see the truck being driven around. The buyer changed nothing about it. I would really like to see if my truck will qualify as antique in about 7 years.

Great video, but I just did this on my 2002 suburban 2500 & I have a couple of comments/tips: 1) for the back 3 bolts that are covered by the transmission bracket, you'll want a bent/angled box wrench. It'll be a whole lot easier to break it loose. 2) I also suggest a flex head ratcheting box wrench for the rest of the 17 bolts. 3) for the sleeve that goes in the filter hole, the video isn't very clear , but that cuff has a lip and that lip is what he's hammering "into" the hole in order to get a grip. Once I bent that, I was able to use a rather large set of pliers to wrench the old sleeve out. 4) to remove the pan, pull it down and tip it to drain it, but then you have to rotate it 90 degrees towards the driver's side to get it out. You may have to bend the exhaust heat shield, but that's fine, just bend it back when you're done. 5) torque spec is a little nebulous on the bolts, but the kit I bought said 120 in-lbs and I had read 18 ft -lbs elsewhere. I split the difference at 15ft-lbs, and that felt pretty good. 6) I put about 1 gallon of trans fluid in, since that's what came out. After I drove it and shifted in and out of the gears, I checked the level and put another quart or so. I'll check it after my morning commute as well. Hope that helps!

The transmission filter should be changed to help extend the life of the transmission and to help protect the transmission. It catches all of the little metal particles that can wear out the transmission.

The fluid is the life line of your transmission. If you keep it clean your transmission will last for quit a long time.

Yeah flushes are aggressive and can reroute fluid and plug up stuff. Just change filter and the fluid. You can drain and refill it a few times before changing the filter to get more new fluid in it if ya want

That trans fluid looks COOKED lol. Definitely was a good idea to get that vehicles tranny fluid changed because in the video it looks like dirty motor oil and once it’s that dark it’s really not doing its job properly anymore. I might just be picky, but I like to see that ATF cherry red going in and coming out. You guys do great videos though. I’m helping a co worker learn how to work on his own truck to save some 💰 and between the affordable yet quality parts and good video content 1A Auto has been a tremendous help.

Buy a new pan with the drain plug if u want to have access that way. Honestly if u drain and fill before your fluid gets anywhere near bad u won't have to pull your pan or filter

They can be on there a little snug. I've always had good luck using a socket and ratchet with an extension as shown in the video. Hope this helps some of you guys out.

I like how easy their drain plug comes out. It doesn't work that way in real life. That plug takes an act of congress to move. Search around its a manufacturing flaw. More times than not you end up stripping it. Better off just pulling the pan, messy but works.

Heat up the plug with a handheld propane torch for about 30 seconds; you don't want to go too long and melt the nitrile rubber gasket on the drain plug.

Mine was on pretty good but got it off with a regular socket and ratchet. The torque spec is suppose to be 18 foot lbs.

We do not have an auto repair video that shows you how to do this, however typically you run a hose from the return line to the transmission into a bucket, after changing the filter and wiping the pan clean button everything back up. Top off the transmission with fluid, start the truck up, the old fluid will empty into the bucket, as that's happening add new fluid into the filler tube and do this until clean pink fluid comes out into the bucket.Ask the dealer how many QTS for a total fluid fill.

great info here. we normally don't drop the pan and change the filter. we just flush the transmission and lines. cause really by dropping the pan your really only changing less than half the fluid, the rest is still in the torque convertor. i was always taught at full operating temp of the engine, the trans fluid should be 3/4 the way to the hot mark. something i was always taught if that seal on the filter stays in there when the filter is down to leave it, have you ever heard that before.

Do not have to replace that grommet if in good shape.Those two back pan bolts can be accessed with a 10mm universal socket.If it calls for dexron 6,do not put in due to finding out it is causing torque converter shudders and blowing up torque converters

@pensacolasurfer I wouldn't flush it as that may disturb some of the gunk in there. You should be ok changing the filter and adding in some fresh fluid.

@crime943 Toughest part is those 2 bolts near the trans mount. Just takes a little patience. Not sure which trans case vid you are referring to. I will be doing one on an S10 in the future.

The filter you took off had three bumps, that one was for a deep pan. The one you put in didn't have those bumps. I think those filters are not interchangeable.

If the fluid is low, make sure it's up to it's recommended level, and see if it keeps doing this. If you haven't changed the transmission fluid and filter in a long time you may want to do a total fluid change in the transmission, and add a new filter. If there's a piece of debris floating around in the transmission it could very well be hanging it up. Hope this helps you out. Have a great day! 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

I did not see that your technique would necessarily purge all of the old transmission fluid out of the transmission cooler radiator. How important is getting rid of that fluid as well, and what's the simplest way to get it out?

Transmission flushing is widely understood to be a last-ditch effort fix. Old fluid has suspended clutch material within the fluid and if you were to remove this from the system the transmission would experience slippage possibly overheating the unit.

Can you just pop the shift cable out of the bracket like that? I've read that you have to loosen the two T40 bolts on top of the bracket? I'm scared if I try to pry it out, I'll break something.

I had trouble to not that bad. It is a U shape clip that slides out from the side towards the top. Go under the truck with a flashlight and look closely where he is working. You will figure it out.

Didnt have a problem removing the cable like they did. Pop the metal clip off then there is two plastic "clips" on the side you need to press together before pushing the cable through.

I was nervous also. It is a u shape clip that pulls out from the top. Pay close attention to where he goes to remove it. It not that hard I figured it out. I have a 05. On mine to get the pan out i had to loosen the exhaust pipe also. It was a little tuff.

Great video. I got ll the parts and was going to tackle this project until I couldn't get the drain plug off. I have never seen a plug on so tight. I used a 10 foot breaker bar, blow torch, and I still can't get it off. The drain plug is now rounded. I ordered a new plug and the truck is going into the transmission shop this week to see if they can break it loose. What did GM torque these drain lugs to from the factory?

18 foot lbs is the recommend torque. Same for the pan bolts.

@@digi3218 The small ones that hold the pan need to be set at 8 foot pounds the drain plug to 13 ft. lbs. per GM.

Nope, and I'm curious if you did yours. Mine has the exhaust running right under the pan, and can't get the pan out without taking the exhaust loose from the header on the drivers side. I've been unable too so far.

Those 2 bolts at rear center of the pan are a pain getting out. Getting them back in was worse. I thought about removing the cross member but, it being a 2002 I'm thinking the bolts ain't gonna budge. Is there an easier way to reinstall those 2 bolts? Lol.

Nice video but.. you wiped off the end of the dip stick to get “the old oil off” but in reality one half of the OLD fluid is still in the upper transmission & torque converter. A rebuild requires 20 quarts of fluid but a fluid drop & filter only requires 8 quarts which is less than half of the total capacity. So depending on how bad that old fluid is you may just fowl those new filters with old fluid, guess that’s why some guys says to change the fluid and filters twice.. there has to be a better way..

How did you get the pan down and past the linkage bracket? I have an Avalanche and that bracket doesn't give me any room to manuever the pan down. On other forums I've read people bending the bracket out of the way but I can't imagine that being a good idea.

I know this won't help you 8 years later but maybe someone else, take that bracket off if it's in the way. It's held on with 2 fasteners. Mine were T40 torx. Some may use a bolt head.

So I changed the fluid in my 2006 Silverado LS 5.3 4x4 today; and had a HECK of a time. I wasn’t able to completely remove the pan, because I could NOT figure out how to remove that bracket that holds the shift linkage. Have any tips for removing that thing?

Some of the basic procedures may be the same. If you have a Haynes of a Chiltons manual for the vehicle, it should show you how to preform this repair.

@bhallais1 The easiest way to do that would be to take the vehicle to a service center where they have a machine that will take all of the old fluid out and replace it with new fluid.

Transmission service is mandatory. Your transmission works because of a hydraulic pump. Any sort of impurities in the fluid will lead to failure. By changing the fluid you actually may notice a significant improvement in "gear changes". I DO NOT suggest a "reverse flush" as, in my professional opinion, does lead to failure. If you just disconnect the upper transmission cooler line at the radiator on the passenger side and temporarily install a Hayden 397 Transmission Line Adapter with a piece of vinyl tubing that goes into a bucket, AFTER you change the filter & clean the magnet, replace the pan, and dump in a few quarts you can start up the engine and fill thru the transmission dipstick SLOWLY while it pumps out the old fluid in the system via the Hayden adapter. This will not completely empty the contents of the transmission but it will exchange MOST of the fluid. You will notice a significant change in the colour of the fluid while it is pumped out. When it looks clean clear cherry-red like new, then shut off the engine. Check your transmission fluid levels just like the 1A auto video says (check it hot; don't overfill). I'd budget 14 quarts to do this job. I have done it at least a dozen times. GM trucks of 1988+ all seem to be able to use the Hayden 397 adapter.

I have a 1990 GMC Sierra 1500 half ton, been great to me only 119K miles sits for 8 months a year. I was driving on freeway and the car felt like it slipped into neutral a couple of times as the pressed the accellerator. Got off and put the car in park, then put it back in drive and the needle on the gear shift didn't move? But the car went into drive...huh.. later I couldn't make it up the hill had to drive 10mph to get it up the hill. Checked the transmission fluid and it was low. Help

I have an issue, my father says that Changing the Transmission oil is bad and that it will damage your transmission, but I read that it only happens when you haven't changed it. My truck was owned by my brother for like 3 years, he didn't change it and I wanted to change it but my dad said it will get damaged. I checked the fluid and surprisingly it is red so does that mean that it's been changed? It had 260,000 miles so the fluid should be black right? So should I change it?

I guess most of the junk settles at the pan which is what he drained and cleaned. Which is not to say there isnt junknstill in there. But for a quick filter change thags good enough

Cuz metal shavings. Mines at 127k and Im gonna do a pan gasket filter change soon. Just drop the pan,,,and clean that magnet...I'm going to add a Rare earth one myself. Can't hurt.

So my drain bolt is stripped. Do you think I can remove the shift cable and just unbolt all the pan bolts with the fluid in?

For anybody wanting an answer to this question: Yes you can remove the pan without draining it but you will make a much bigger mess. Leave a few bolts loosely on each corner and get the pan unstuck. Then you can remove the bolts and try to remove the pan and try to catch the fluid inside of it. The bracket on the driver side will make this tricky and probably a big mess.

There are ways to suck the fluid out through the dipstick tube as well but you will remove a lot more fluid I believe.

my 04 Chevy 2500 has a heat shield that is covering the passenger side bolts. The shield is attached to an exhaust hanger, and I can't see how to remove it or work around it. The shield goes back to the trans support brace that covers the back bolts, that are hard to get to anyways. Any suggestions?

If the rigid factory style gasket is still there AND it does not have any cuts or scraps on the rubber sealing surface of gasket then YES you can re-use it.

You have a 4L80E. You can check your glovebox for the RPO code too but you have a 4L80E regardless if 2WD or 4WD. When you try to buy a filter kit the vendor may ask questions about "deep pan" etc.

My dad has a 2004 Silverrodo Z71 it has the 5.3- 327,The dealer told him they dont change the filter in them,You dont have to? The filters in them are like a fiber one,All they do is transmission flush,!!! So whats the deal!!! please help me, I think someones full of you know what lol

Sounds like some bad advice. Filters are made to catch stuff and if they catch too much then they will get clogged lol. Flush won't remove crud in the filter.

yeah he did. it had a reusable gasket. great thing cause it doesnt leave any resadue

you don't show how to get the pan past the shifter bracket, it won't. looks like you bent it out of the way, should tell people this in your video, the 2 torx head bolts that hold the bracket on are nearly impossible to get out on top of the transmission.
