Great video dude, I started to watch 6 others but none of them explained this as simply as yours. I have the smart 3 as well, did not see this video in time and burned a coil in a Resilient Sounds Platinum 12D1,🤦♂️ had it wired to 2ohm. And about 3/4 gain. as you know that's a bit over 2krms for the subs ratings. Probably close to 2700rms.. So I'm waiting for my recone and will set gain correctly this time.. any info on the clip meter wiring? My wires got pulled off the board. Dont know what goes where
I did same thing with a clip monitor. And not sure how they go. I'll look at one in my car that works after work tomorrow. Just leave me another comment tomorrow so I don't forget. And I'm glad I could help👍👊😎💯
Great Video and thank you for making it my friend. 🙏 Question for you if I may. Once you reconnect the subs to the amp will the voltage change? I heard someone in another video mention something about rail voltage with and without load in an amplifier will be different. Appreciate your time and input. 🙏
There is so much room for error in this method IMO. There are too many variables including impedance rise. That's why I've set my amps by ear for over 25 years. I've used this method a few times to try it and there was always performance left on the table that I could hear but on paper it doesn't equate. To each their own I suppose. You did explain the method well. Good video.
Thanks and I set mine by ear to but have used this method to know what it should be. But usually good amps are under rated so you can set them higher without clipping.😎💯
Just got my first Taramps, an HD3000 1-ohm. I have it on a couple of Orion 10” from the mid 90s (2-ohm mono total) and this shows me how to intelligently set it lower to not cook those guys. It’s scary how much power this amp can put out, I’m very impressed!
This procedure is a very much sought after topic with amplifiers being as big and bad as they are today. It's easy to get an amplifier that does way too much for your subs and you need to turn down that amp so you don't burn out a voice coil.
Sir, again, thank you. I just put a 320amp alt in my jeep patriot, along with the 2/0G big 3 upgrade. Stock battery. 1 Run of 0G to the back. Single 15. 2ohm dvc. 1500.1 amp @ 1ohm... 3.00 cubic slotted box. Gonna go set her right now. Later BASSHEAD
Doing this will most likely hurt a lot of peoples feelings. They’ll set it like this to their target voltage, listen to it, and then end up turning it back up because they decided it’s not loud enough. Just speaking from experience.
Great video. correction at 12:33 - that's *_0.5 octaves_* below the enclosure tuning for the hi-pass(subsonic) filter .. not 5 octaves. so in your case if your port is tuned at 32hz you should set your hi-pass around @ 24hz.
Ok Thanks! I knew that but said it wrong. I wasn't the best at RU-vid back then I've got a lot better now. But thanks for pointing that out. So other's will know👍😎💯💨💨
High pass filter is different on a class d full range amplifier I barely crank my High pass filter up on my 8k 2ohm taramps? I running 2xv3 sundown 12s YOU have to include impedance rise also so I'm only pushing about 6 to 7000 watts maybe? On those two subwoofers and another thing my enclosure is 4.50 cubic feet at 32hertz? So it can take more power? And the bass is tighter?
Just noticed you was In A saturn ion just had my solobaric 15 in it that rattle it like hell couldn't believe it fit like it did when 1st got it and installed it in a 93 Cavalier then 91 grand prix after that but 3rdly that ion was weighed down then timing went replaces by 2000 durango suvs bring more options I don't think I'll have another sedan build for while just so limited and no space no doubt had heads turning in that 03 ion downtown Seattle and places😂😂
..and if you REALLY wanna set an EQ on your deck, do it *before* you set gains on the amp; however this really requires the use of an oscilloscope to verify sine wave is clean. I'd recommend one of the newer Rockford Fosgate amps. I have a Punch P600X4 and what's cool is it has built in gain adjustment, what's cooler is it has an input clip light!
54.7 is 3k and I still did 3k. The sub takes about 2500 with no problems. Just have to watch the volume and use your bassknob plus watch clip light. You can set the amo to 1500 using the formula. Good subs usually do more than rated. My Sundown Xv2 15's are only rated 1500 and I give them 3k apiece. I've had them taking a 8k for longtime. Just have to listen and play with adjustments to fine tune your system. Everyone is different. Due to different cabin space and enclosure size
You made a video later raising the voltage to around 75v and it woke your sub up. A good sub can take way more than rated power. This is only good for SQ maybe?. I have 2 smart bass 3ks powering 2 Avatar stu 12s. Gain is matched at 75v on both amps. If i set mine at 54v it wouldn't be loud at all. I dont clip either.
I can tell from the video alone your very knowledgeable in car audio and everything else for that matter...quick question...do you have any car audio laying around that you don't use that you could sell for cheap?....I have very little money as of now due to my living situation but I can always hustle something up. .I just want to BANG lol...thanks in advance and keep up the good work with the vids
My sub is 900rms my amp is 1000rms So I would do 900 x 1ohm (sub wired down to) then square root of 900 which is 30 volts and that is what I’d set it to?
Well the RMS of your amp is the peak rating. But I was only had 1 sub at that time. And the sub was rated at 1500, The amp was rated 3000. Now if I had 2 1500 RMS subs. I could have set it at 3000.😎💯
@@bassjunkie2020 oks so idk what I did wrong but I feel like the sound of the speakers inside are low and the sub is playing so I hook up everything but need to tune the amp and so everything was dial down except the low pass and then I proceed to put the volume 75 percent and play a test hertz of 50 and then adjusted the gain so if there’s anything wrong that I did I feel like it was louder before the sub came into play
Yeah I know but ppl freak out when I tell them that. They say ones for output other is input. But I talked to Taramps in Brazil yrs ago. And they told me you could still hook up both 🙈
@@bassjunkie2020 yeah people dont understand how input and output are, all they do is bridge the output to the input so you can get the rca signal its just the exact as using a Y adapter
I do like how he broke it down. But he didn't mention it u have 1 sub wired down to 1 ohm. Whitch would just be have that then. But did great every new sub or amp I'm on RU-vid looken stuff up for q refresher
I noticed you had the low pass turned up when you were setting the gain I had everything on zero on the amp played 40 Hertz test tone and then slowly turned up the gain until the clip light almost came on so I don't know which way is Right which way is Right....... And you put everything flat on the deck when you're setting the game which I do too but then when I put my EQ on a good setting after it's all set now it's clipping cuz I don't want to listen to flat music I turn the EQ up on the deck and now it's clipping
I got with the weakest rms. So if your sub is 1000 rms but your amp puts out 1500 rms. I'd do the sub. But if your sub is 1500 rms and your amp only puts out 1000 rms. I'd go with the amp then. That way your not clipping either way👍💯
You didn't have to. You can just leave the one unplugged. And tape the connector. But I found out later on that you can plug it in like normal. A rep from Brazil Taramps. Told me that. And I did and everything worked fine. But if your worried about it. Just plug one up to input. The 2nd is just to send signal to a 2nd amp. Because you can strap full range amos. But you can chain them and gain match. Hope this helps. Also goto Taramps web page and there is contact info at bottom of page. Email them and ask them about it. That's what I did! They have sent me new clip monitors over 50 decals and more! Great company 👍😎💯💨💨💨💨
Yes I know the amp he is using has been on dynoed RU-vid. And it tested higher then 3000 at 1ohm. And is the same amp I use to have. However it couldn't handle the 1500 sundown
If i have 2 subs , i need to calculate both of them or only one of them? Btw subs are on a stereo amp one sub per channel (2 channels). 40w*2 channels 4 ohm 45w rms subs 8inch.
nice video how i set the gain on my amp i have a 2500 watt rms sub and a 3500 watt amp rms on one ohm is a 2x2 ohm sub and have 2500 watt rms how i set that verry thanks i hope too hear
If I calculate for subs it comes out to 48.7 but if I calculate for my amp it comes out to 44.7 were would u set amp?? My subs are 2400rms and amp is 2000rms ..
Hey i need help with my setup im having trouble but i got a 3700 watt amp and 2 15s dvc 1300 rms each how do i calculate this do i add the 1300 to male 2600 and calculate based off that ? How ould go about adjusting the gain for that ? I only have a multi meter
I get how to get the voltage my question is i have two 600watt rms subs at 2ohm..so do i just square root 1200 as 600x2 ..or is it 1200 per sub so id add 1200x2 for each sub and square root that..or 1 2 3 subs it does not matter?
Well if you have 2 subs both 600 rms then you will need 1200 rms to push them. So 1200 × 2 =2400 square root is 48.98 volts. Just make sure your amp does 1200 rms
I've got to make an updated video that's an old video I plan on making the updated version soon of this video and explain a little more I've learned a lot since then
@@bassjunkie2020 thanks brother..UPDATE my nostrils are flapping NOW along with my rearview and side mirrors...APPRECIATE the response more then you know..WAKEY WAKEY neighbors😉👍
very nice video I have the same Amps I would like to set 1,000 watts do I need another battery someone told me these amps need current lots of it. Thank you.
Awesome video, I have a question I was thinking about getting a 4k amp an run it at 2ohm load. My 2 subs I currently have can handle 700w rms each so 1400w. If my 4k amp is 2400w at 2ohm load could it be set to jus deliver 1400w? Reason is cuse I know I'm gonna eventually put 4 subs that will need the 4k amp. But for now with the 2 subs I have now they only can handle 700w each. Thanks alot
I have the same amp, have set it with multi meter and clip indicator but when I turn it up the amp just goes into protect mode. The clip light does not flash at all just goes straight to protect
Usually just turn everything off let it sit. Should come back on. If not check your subs. One could be blowed. If subs ok. Then check all the wires. Make sure none are burnt. If everything checks out. Then email Taramps and tell them what you have going on. They will probably have you send it to them to fix👍😁💯
HELP PLEASE! MY amp is rated at 800@1ohm(pioneer 8601). My subs are 200watts nominal each(pioneer TS-W253R) and I have 3 subs. So what should I be reading on my multi-meter when setting the gain for these?
Back then I had 2 batteries. Which the smart 3 would go into protect a lot of it dropped below 11. I since solved that problem. I now run a Taramps md 8k. I have a JS 250 amp alternator big 4 all 0g welding cable and 40 ah limitless lithium battery
Hi hope you can help me I have a max output subs at 1200w but it’s 2ohm sub and I have 4 channel amp is kenwood kac x4d max output 1200w but I bridge it to get max output ...at bridge is 300w so should I use the bridge output ?.. or should I just use the subs rating ?.? Plz plz help just a beginner...
Hey so i have a cadillac cts 07 and i used my factory head unit with a high low converter i have a Phoenix gold rx 1000w and 2 sundown lcs 12s d4 300 rms a piece so 600 rms combined. so how would i set my amp? I don’t know my head unit distortion either…
What if im clipping at a voltage lower than max rated rms ,lights are dimming too could low voltage be the cause i did a big 3 and it helped a little allowing me to crank the volume up a bit more before clipping but my 3k watt amp is clipping tuned low using ohms law at about 1250 watts
Yes and no. I mean they are rated 1500. But Sundown under rates there subs. So if I got a 6k. There wouldn't be any headroom. Why I use 8k. With box rise. The subs only see 5846 rms. So if I had 6o they would probably only see 3k
I have a question would this be the same setup for 0.5 ohm because I have a single skar zvxV2 15 dual 1ohm so that's making it 0.5 ohm to the amp and the speaker also puts out 1500 rms but could handle more than what's it rated. By the way I have the same amp taramps 3k smart bass really hope I could get an answer
I just did the same process and when I play the test tones the amp shows that is clipping when I raise the gain and the meter shows me all kinds of numbers up an down. Any reason fo this?
Yes I have good electrical. What I figured out is that I had the head unit all the way up and also the loudness so there was a lot of distortion. I set the head unit to 35 and took loudness out and then was able to set the correct gain. I’m running a Skar EVL-D2 1250rms. I did the calculation and set the gain to 50 on the Taramps. System is sounding great. Thanks to your video is was simple to do. Keep up the good work 👍
Not sure you have to if your only running 1 amp. But if you running 2 then yeah Y splinters. But I control both amps from 1 NVX bass knob. I used the signal out on the Smart 3 to the audio Legion 1600 . So I can cut signal from both amps. The audio Legion has its own bass knob also. So I got it hooked up as well. That way I can turn it off and just run the smart 3. For my 4 channel amp no bass knob. But I have them hooked up using a line out convertor. I have the converter hooked behind my head unit. I tapped into the speakers output wires coming from my head unit. Cause my head unit only has 2 RCA's out puts that are set for subs. So the line out convertor works like a charm. 👍💯
@@bassjunkie2020 yall just fixed a thought i was having earlier..i was thinking man thats shitty no bass knob like my sundown amp, then i read this i remembered they have bass knobs that have rca inputs and outputs and u use the potentiometer to control to rca voltage from the head unit 🤷🏻♂️
@@JULIANysuHOHNER They are close. But the vfx is probably better from what I've seen. But I've only owned the xfls. And only skar subs I owned were the ddx . But have got some killer Demo's from vfx's. But both are good 👍
I have two subs at 1800rms dvc 2 ohms and I'll be running two amps strapped to run them would I add 1800 to get 3600 and then times it by 2ohms? It'd be 7200 total then squared 84. 85 volts is that kinda high
I'm not sure. I think I know the answer. But I don't want to tell you wrong. Here's link to new Facebook page and group I made. A lot of bassheads in the group already. You can join and ask same questions maybe add some pictures to so we can see. It's why I made the group. It's for you guy's!👊👍💯 facebook.com/BassJunkies-108584201276758/
That's the only thing I do differently. Leave everything set the way you like it to sound. EQ, loudness, any dynamic bass enhancers....if you have a bass knob turn it to max output, get it all sounding like you want with the sub disconnected. Then do this procedure and adjust gain up until it clips, then back off a touch. If you do it with EQ flat and everything turned off and bass knob turned down the moment you turn anything up at all you're straight into clipping. A flat eq sounds like trash, you gotta tune it to where it sounds good. I use this guy's method with a scope so I'm not guessing if the output is clipping or not. You can see it. That's the other problem doing it with a multimeter like this. It gives you correct power but not clean power. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hQOPP-l3AMo.html
Look your amplifier has built in eq which is low pass and high pass. You can't set eq on your head unit and your amp. It has to be 1or the other or your clipping! Do some more research. Even though your scoop might say different. Your still clipping trust me. Your coils will burn🔥
@@bassjunkie2020 You're not listening or comprehending. A low pass or high pass filter is not an EQ. I suggest you do some more research. Nobody listens to their music with a flat eq. It sounds like shit. If you set your amp at maximum output BEFORE making any sound adjustments on the head unit you will be straight clipping the moment you run anything above a flat eq. So you should tune your system with your eq first. Then with an oscilloscope check what volume your head unit clips at with the settings you want set. Then tune amp gain with oscilloscope until it clips and back off a touch. This way no matter how far you turn it up, you will not clip. I tune every level of mine with an oscilloscope and can guarantee using the method I linked to, and a oscope, you can't clip. Period.
I wouldn’t say proper tuning because all his unit settings were at zero and he set the gain so when he goes to adjust the bass boost and other settings on the unit it’s gonna send a shit ton of clips and blow that sub!! You set your unit FIRST and THEN set your gain to YOUR settings!! O and turn your bass boost remote knob all the way up also
I never touch any of those settings on my head unit. Even after I set the amp. The amp has a crossover already. What do you think low pass and high pass is. Settings the head unit and the amp is 2 different crossover. So one or the other. If you set both you will be clipping. If you want more control. Get a dsp or a equalizer. So don't listen to dude. Head unit stays flat! And definitely don't use bass boost🙈🔥
Thank you for the video. Let me run this by you to make sure I am correct. My sub is 500RMS my amp can put out 600rms at 4 ohms. I would like to keep at 4 ohms. Okay so I need to do 600 x 4 = 2400 and the square root of that is 48.9. So use my multi meter to set it to that number and I should be getting 600rms or whatever the amp is rated for at that setting correct? Thank you Hard to wrap my head around it because 1000 rms is 31 and it’s more watts
I have 2 kicker L7 12inch q class 2 ohm on a taramps 1800.1 d 1 ohm should I wire them down to 1 ohm or should I just get the 2 ohm version of the 1800 watt taramps for the best performance out of them? Or should I get a bigger taramps 2ohm amp like the 2k or 3k version and just keep it down cause the kivkers are 900rms I believe... so that's why I figured the 1800 watt taramps would be perfect... but I just am not sure if the subs being a 2 ohm sub would be better to be blpowered by a 2 ohm amp or if it would be better to just wire them down to 1ohm.. please any help would be much appreciated 🙏
I'd wire them down to 1ohm and get a Taramps md 3k. And do set the gain at 1800 rms. If the subs do good. You can turn it up slowly until it is perfect. Just keep your eye on clip light. And listen to make sure it doesn't sound distorted 👍😎💯
@@bassjunkie2020 ok perfect thanks man I really appreciate it..I have the clip light add on and rca bass knob also...now I just have to figure out how the heck I wire them down to 1 ohm... I have no clue how to do that lol
So I have an issue I can't even get close to what I need to get any bass and my clip light comes on with almost no gain my other amp hit harder and was only a 1k this is the md3000.1 1 ohms I'm wired to 1 and should be 3x louder but it's not what's the issue
@@bassjunkie2020 that's what I was thinking but I'm getting 1.3 v from each RCA from the back of my HU haven't tested output signal from the EQ I have the Rockville r7 EQ and I don't have a bass knob yet I'm about to get one but I'll have to re tune the amp but I got 4 8's rated at 1000 wrms each and my volt was set to 54.1 and that should put me at 3k watts but it only gets really loud at clipping point
@@bassjunkie2020 stripped my panels and rerouting my RCA's down the center of my truck to see if it's signal distortion from RCA and power/ speakers running down the same side hopefully it fixes it and I can get more clean single to boost power
Nice video. I have 4 1000 watts subs and 2 smart3’s . My subs are wired @ 1 ohm per pair. They are 4 ohm DVC’s . What’s my target voltage per amp also would this method be like gain matching?
For each Smart 3. To get 1000rms per sub. Set each Smart 3 @ 44.72 volts @ 1ohm. That will give you 2000rms per amplifier. 2000 rms ÷ 2 subs = 1000 rms per sub👍😁💯
