Hi John, thanks for the videos the have helped a lot. I am having an issue after the rebuild and was hoping you could help. I have set the timing four times at this point and still have a no start and recently had two backfires that knocked the carburetor off the intake manifold. My issue is every time I align the lines on the cam to the block I have a good amount of play in the cam (like an eight of a turn) it was the same on the old cam and new cam. The reason I did the rebuild was to get rid of the cam chain noise with a Part # 14401-MEB-671 cam chain for a CRF 450r. I read in multiple posts that it was the best cam chain to use. Could this be the issue? I set the valve lash and replaced the coil and cdi. The fuel might be degraded but I tried staring it with staring fluid and it didn’t start. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

And I have another question after I put my head gasket and all that stuff it ran just fine but it was leaking out of the head I put everything back in a new hair gaskets and everything and I want to put it back in time as pretty much like you were showing me and when I put it all together I'm getting spark and everything but it will not hit I cannot get it to start

My timing chain broke, yamaha Timberwolf 250. I aligned crank marks but when aligning the cam marks rotating clockwise there is movement between the lobes. Should I rotate cam CCW to align the cam marks? Thanks for your help

I have a question I have a 400 EX and I changed the headgasket on it and that's all I did I followed the video I can get the T and get the tea come up when I set the The Cam the marks like you're saying and I could see the tea but my tea is a little away from the groove in the eyesight the eyesight and up I can't get the Cam to completely play on mark's on the head just right without being awful being off a little bit I was wondering does the end of the piece on the Cam does it come off

Buen video. Estoy reparando mi Honda Falcon 400cc y es el mismo motor. Yo tenia la duda hacia donde debia de estar el arbol de leva orientado. Ahora se que el arbol de leva en punto T debe de ir hacia abajo y las marcas en el sprocket deben de estar niveladas respecto a la cabeza de valvulas. Buen trabajo !

Got a questionI have my timing chain and cam unhooked on the 2002 Honda TRX 400 when I line up the timing mark on the fly wheel the piston is all the way down no matter what stroke I’m on whenever I get the piston TDC I am no longer on the fly wheel timing mark?

Plug, coil wire, fuses. If you keep testing down the system, you'll figure out where the spark stops.

Well I has no fire ,so what I did ,by the way this Papabear ,I've got a 400ex And 300ex on the 300 I went from the battery to the off and on wire coming from the switch on the handle bar and added a push button, wit a fuse between the battery and the off and on button just in case and my spark plug started fire, hit me back ,

My lines dont line up straight to the head eather the rear is a little high or the front is. The only way to make it even is to move the F or T to the front a little. Thos also happend with a 250cc hammerhead I had.

My 400 had a bad head gasket so I replaced it , use to run fine , now it won’t stay running wants to turn in but won’t , keeps shooting load noise from muffler popping noise , keep looking and found that the decompression pin is shorter then what should be doesn’t stay out a bit shouldn’t it stick out some ? Also can feel and see the spring can this be why the bike won’t stay on or fire up ? I order a new pin and spring , just weird how it was running like that fine ? Please help

I have a 07 400ex I've messed and played with the timing it's getting a good strong spark and it's getting fuel but it won't start it'll just back fire once out the carb any idea on why it's doing that or how I can fix it

I was doing some snow drifting on my 2003 400EX in 4th gear and it stalled and wouldn't start. So I did a compression test and it had less than 1 psi. I also found out that air is being sucked from my exhaust when I try to start it. What do you think is the problem?

You're going to have to dive into the top end. My guess is you blew a valve.

I have a 2016 honda 500 rubicon, that will not crank. It does nothing but click. I have purchased a new battery, starter, solenoid, key switch, and bank angle sensor ( that's the code given). Nothing has worked, what do I do now? Also checked the fuses, they test good. I'm lost now.

It's common to have a little tic in these motors. You can readjust until you quiet it down a bit.

I've set timing on these things quite a few time this same way. This time around im having a issue when the tdc mark on the flywheel is lined up the piston is not at the top of the stroke. when i use the timing mark and then set the cam timing properly it will get to a point when it will not turn over by hand and seems to bind up. I don't think i'm 180 out because I've messed with all my different options. if I get the piston to the top of the stroke and then set the cam timing it turns over nicely by hand. Any advice on what im doing wrong?

Jhon i have a question? If i install a stage 2 hotcam for my 2006 honda 400ex does thAt mean i have to change the timing too? I left the timing like for a stage 1 and the front valve bend damage the piston and the header what should i do?

TDC is the same, the placement of the cams will determine compression.

Hey John got a 97 xr400 it's hard to kick it over and the decompress lever doesn't change anything. After about 5 mins of trying it might start. What can cause it too hard to kick or turn over. I can kick it sometime and it get stuck on the compression stroke after a few tries it will finally turn over but not start the and the cycle recycle.

When you set the timing mark to TDC, you want the lobes to face down.

You can reset the cam chain tensioner. If it's still loose after a reset, it may need replacement.

Which bolt are you having issues with? First thoughts lead to cross threading or just corrosion on the bolt. Try cleaning them with a wire brush to get rid of debris.

Compression, valves or timing. Usually it comes down to timing or a valve not seating correctly.

It could be literally anything. If you just did the timing, confirm it's correct and check valves.

It's easier to set it at TDC to inspect. You can always reset it in the middle.

So i am doing this to my 04 400ex. Lobes are down, timing marks are correct, I at TDC my bike will fire and run for maybe 5 seconds then shut down. All my valves are adjusted properly she just won't run. Any suggestions?

If all the mechanical parts are correct, it will boil down to electrical or fuel. Best guess would be fuel.

A little ticking is normal on this motor. Be sure to do the valve adjustment when the engine is warm, it will reduce the ticking when riding.

I'm still confused, when I get the timing mark to the "T" position and put in my cam shaft with the lobes down how do I know if the cam shaft and the motor are on the same stroke? If you can try to explain it would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Caleb. When you set the crankshaft to the T position, and install the camshaft with the lobes down it puts the rotation assembly, and the valve train on the same stroke. I hope that is a good explanation for you.
