I might do at some point. It's more complicated than just creating your own server and things usually go wrong when people try and mod their servers for the first time (it certainly did for me). So it's more difficult to make a video that explains things very simply - which is what I'd want to do. And I would not know which mods people want to install! The start.bat file is needed to start a server with mods because the Steam desktop 'DayZ Server' shortcut will not run mods. I just copied one online and used that.

I expect so. Have a look in the Steam Workshop. I've never tried it myself. The way I see it is; all those things are there already and it's up to me to go and find them.

The only way I can recreate this issue is if my server isn't running at all (I get exactly that same message). So, this probably means (assuming you're satisfied that the server is running - with no errors showing in the 'white box') that it's a port issue. It's usually a good idea to verify the server files via your Steam Library just to make sure it's ok then try again. Failing that, you can then try using the 'direct connect' button in the bottom right of the DayZ game interface. Enter the IP as 127.0. 0.1. I've never tried this myself as I've never had this particular problem. I'm assuming your running the game and server on the same machine. If not then I'm out of my depth...!

The instructions in this video won't work at all if you're not using the same PC. If you're trying to run a server on another PC over a network (home or otherwise) that you have already set up, then you can't use a Steam desktop shortcut to start that server. Just install/copy the server to the other PC and run it using the DayZServer_x64 application in the root server folder.

@@BFNowhere Thanks mate, I tried running DAYZ Server on the same PC as my regular DAYZ, and I made it further than I did when using separate PC'S but didn't achieve success. I got the white textbox part to drop down and tell me that the server was all up and running, yet there was still no option to join any sort of server from the LAN menu. I tried unblocking ports for the firewall on 2302-2305, still nothing. It was only then when I tried joining from direct connect using IP 127.0.0.1. that I gave up. It appears I have gotten very unlucky :(

It seems to occasionally happen to a few people. It must be a network/security issue but I don't know how to fix it other than the direct connect option.

You can try the 'Direct Connect' option from the main game interface. Address should be 127.0.0.1.

I would strongly recommend the 'Expansion' mods: it includes AI (if you choose it). The AI, when in a group, almost always got the better of me! However, I don't think the full package is compatible with many maps beyond Chernarus. You might be able to go with just some elements, but I'm not sure. It is quite an involved process installing, but if you're used to installing mods it would probably be quite easy for you. Of course, these have to be installed on the server as well as your DayZ game...

If you play it like I'm showing here - the challenges are the infected, wolves, bears (very rare!), hunger, thirst, cold and various illnesses you can catch. There are no AI enemies/bots. I think it's a great way to learn the many different mechanics of the game without having to worry about being killed by other players. Having said that, everybody should try online because it's very intense fun.

If you want to connect two pc's - it doesn't matter whether it's through your home wifi router or over a satellite link from the other side of the world. You will still need to create a network. As for playing an older version of DayZ: all I can say is - it would work if you could make sure both client and server had the same version. I have no idea how you would do that. Either way, the instructions in this video are not relevant to your requirements.

I don't know of a way to reset loot without completely resetting the server, which means deleting your character progress. I've never had a problem with this; it's a case of moving somewhere else for different loot in my experience. There's more than one cause of explosions - they may not be helicopter crashes you're hearing, It could be gas explosions. If you think there is a glitch thing going on for sure, then you can verify your server files with Steam to check if there is anything missing from your installation. That seems unlikely to me unless you've been changing settings yourself.

Loot respawns (and despawns) over time automatically when the server is running. Stopping and restarting the server makes no difference. There are settings you can change if you don't mind editing xml. files. Playing on Chernarus, the quality of loot increases as you head north and west.

It's random. Each piece of loot (weapons, tins of food, clothes etc.) all have a preset chance of spawning in any particular place. If you are looking for specific kinds of items, these have a greater chance in specific areas (ammo in military tents for example). I have never found that visiting a particular place (or not) causes loot to spawn. It DOES cause random 'event spawns' though. These are usually vehicles on the roads - military convoys and crashed helicopters. These usually have infected spawns that acompany them and also have their own random loot spawns. They don't remain on the map for very long. Some items are extremely rare and you are very unlikely to find them.

I have no reason to think that it won't. As long as the server software is freely available users will be able to run their own server.

No. Your progress is kept only on the server. You have to start again each time you join a new one.

Yes they could - technically. You would need to create network access to your PC. It's not super-difficult but you'd need to spend some time! I think somebody asked a similar question a while ago. If you scroll down through the comments it should be there. I think I asked AI for instructions and they were quite detailed. Good luck!

Probably at some point. I'm not able to confidently advise people on how to do it at the moment as I'm a beginner myself. I'd want it to be as clear and as simple (and short) as possible and I'm not able to do that yet. I can say that; your mods are loaded by the game itself which is easy enough. Once you've downloaded them from the DayZ Steam Workshop they can be run from the main game interface. The server is the trickier part as it needs the map information and it also needs to be 'told' to run that particular map when you start it up. I don't know if that was my mistake or that things have changed since the video was made.

Go to LRP youtube channel, its different then BFNowhere's guide on how to set up a server. This one is super simple and works well for non moded servers to run on lan. LRP has a video on how to create a single player server you want to follow that guide, it doesnt take long. Then you want to go to his video on how to add the mods to the dayz server. Two totally different guides but LRP is more for modding. IT does take a little bit of time to set up the mods and join. I hope that helped. I'm not going to be putting links because thats now allowed on comment sections i believe.

I'm on Windows 11. If you have any Steam games installed at all - that's where they will be unless you have specified a different place in your Steam download settings (online). So, find the game on your PC and that's where it will be.

The settings were default for Chernarus and Livonia. For Namalsk I ended up dialling back the total number of Zombies as it was getting annoying (and tough). I'll have a look tomorrow and I'll let you know what I changed.

Thanks, loving the let’s plays. Just wondering if you changed any of the despawn times for zombies and if that affects how quickly they will spawn into an area after you’ve cleared it. Trying to navigate the conf files are a straight nightmare.

No, it was just a change of the total amount. I didn't mess with anything else.

The value I changed (for Namalsk) was located at "mpmissions egular.namalsk egular.namalsk\db\Globals.xml" There is a Zombie Max Count value which can be reduced or increased. If I remember rightly, I reduced it from 1600 to 1200.

To the best of my knowledge; for this to be theoretically possible you would need two separate installations of the game. DayZ doesn't allow two characters for the SAME player on one server, let alone two players! Whether you could install the game twice using the Steam installer I don't know. You could maybe copy a fresh installation to another directory/drive and go from there. I doubt it would work using the method in this video (although you could try), you would most likely need to have the server start with its own .bat file (bypassing the need for the server to run via Steam). This is reasonably easy to do and there are lots of videos on YT explaining how to do this and may provide links to ready-made files you can copy and use. This is all just off the top of my head, but if you can get two games that can run independently (one at a time of course), that is the issue. It's the server that retains the 'save' data.

No. You're just creating another server to connect to. Your character data is stored elsewhere.

No. The particular server you connect to retains your progress. It will have no effect at all on anything you do on another server.

Sounds like your config file is read-only for some reason. Did you try right-clicking on it and unchecking the read-only box? Then you should be ok to edit and save it. It might be safer to keep a back-up before you make any changes - it's only a tiny file. I don't know which mod you're trying to install. This video wasn't about adding mods to the server (although you can do that of course).

When you say loading screen - do you mean the white text window with all the scrolling server info? I'm not sure what you mean by little boxes! Or do you mean the game loading screen is getting stuck?

It's the little box in the center of the screen when you first open the program. It has little boxes that get checked off as you go but mine just gets stuck on the first one and gives me an error after a bit.@@BFNowhere

Ah yes, now I know! Try just minimising the (black window) box - don't close it. You should then see the smaller white scrolling window and hopefully you'll find the server is starting to run quite happily!

The settings are in serverDZ in your server folder. Look for 'serverTimeAcceleration' and 'serverNightTimeAcceleration'.

If you can start your server but not see it under your LAN tab then it's probably a network issue on your PC. You can either fix that or you can try the 'direct connect' option. Enter 127.0.0.1 as the port address.

@xravennax If you're trying to set up a network with two PC's then I can't help you. This video was for a server running on the same PC as the game.

The first thing to do is verify the server files from the Steam Library page. That fixes most problems. Battleye should not cause an issue like that - if you haven't changed anything.

@@BFNowhereOK. I've verified the integrity of the game and the server. Every time that I start the game and connect to the server, I am given a message that Battleeye is required to join the server. Battleeye initializes but fails to start. I click load in without Battleeye and I get kicked because Bad Packet Battleeye. Then When I click play from the character screen the server is still unreachable. Do you have any idea how I can shut the requirement for Battleeye off for my own locally hosted server?

My understanding is that battleye cannot currently be disabled on the server side. So I guess that means if you disable it in your game you won't be able to connect to a server. I don't know what is causing the problem. It might be something about the 'network' connection - which it technically is -even on the same PC as the game is installed. So, anti-virus software or the general network settings on your PC could be interfering with your connection. Can you connect to a remote server? @@BFNowhereThanks for getting back to me. I appreciate your time. I just gave up on it. I gave BattlEye permission to do it's thing. My firewall is letting it through, and it's still just failing to initialize. This prohibits me from playing the game in any form. The game is just unplayable for me and I'm done with Bohemia and any game that uses BattlEye.

You don't need a folder called 'games'.

The easy way would be to just wait for the loot to respawn normally. Other than that, you'd most likely be editing XML files. Not so easy.

Yes. You can use mods and play on any map that you have. Obviously the instructions here are just for playing default on Chernarus.

You would need to connect the 2 PC's as a network. If you can sort that then it would work just fine.

@@BFNowhere Maybe I should have went into more detail. I do have them on my network but Steam will only allow you to be logged in on one PC. If I start the DayZ server on my other PC Steam disconnects me from my main PC and visa versa.

What I suggest is creating a 'start.bat' file to start the server without Steam. Then you'd be ok with running the game. It's too complex a process for me to describe. Try looking at YT vids on modding your server. Server modders have to create one because Steam won't do it so it has to be bypassed.

Yes it is possible. Unfortunately, I've never tried to do it myself so I can't advise you on any specific things you would need to do (although it's probably not much). Of course you will need to download the server software making sure it's a compatible version. DayZ and the server update quite frequently and won't work together at all if they're different versions.

Try the Bohemia Interactive website. Beyond that - I don't know.

It sounds like your 'init.c' file is missing from your folder \SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\DayZServer\mpmissions\dayzOffline.chernarusplus. I was able to recreate your exact error simply by deleting that small file. Verifying with Steam re-installs it (for me anyway). If, after you verify the server files with Steam that file is not present, you can download it from here - github.com/BohemiaInteractive/DayZ-Central-Economy/blob/master/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/init.c I strongly advise that you test a new server with default settings before you make any changes.

I should have added: if the file is there then I suggest you delete it and re-download it as it may be corrupted.

@@BFNowhere hi again..first off thanks a lot for taking time to help and reply...i just tried an online server...everything runs fine...but i still wont work with the dzserver... i once tried to host a server a server so made a mission..went in and it spawned nothing..i saved the mission...and i cant delete it now...could that be it ? i did not try the init file yet..again thanks for your time

If you want to wipe/delete saved progress on a server you need to delete the 'storage_1' folder in SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\DayZServer\mpmissions\dayzOffline.chernarusplus. Obviously I don't know, but it seems you've been doing other things with servers before. If that's the case - I would just delete the whole server and start again 🙂. You can have as many different servers as you can fit on your drive (as long as they have different names), but the method in this video will only work with a single server as the Steam desktop shortcut will only start a default 'DayZServer'.

Something isn't configured correctly, check the code is entered correctly. Verify your server files with Steam. You might need to re-enter your server name in the 'serverDZ' config file.

Loot amounts and spawns are controlled by an XML. file called 'globals'. It's located at DayZServer/mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/dB. You can change values in there. However, if you've not been tinkering with these settings then something else could be wrong. I suggest you delete the whole dB folder and verify your server with Steam which will download new copies. If you don't want to do that just try doing the verification steps alone. It fixes many general bugs that have no apparent cause.

The only change that I have made to the globals.xml is to modify the “IdleModeStartup”, as it was suggested that this will continue the loot spawning after I log out. It did not seem to make any difference. I have verified and re-installed the game a number of times I have turned off the “StaticContaminatedArea” in the events.xml and changed the “cfgeffectarea.json” to remove its contents. I fear that this is a much deeper issue as it happens with all of the 20 + maps that I have installed… even the experimental builds. If interested, I started a ticket (# T170029) with bohemia a long time ago, but no resolution has been suggested. The video that I posted is quite amusing. If you know of anyone in the community that would be willing to take on my challenge, It would be most appreciated.

Right. Obviously something deeper going on here. Unfortunately I have no decent answer. It's strange that its a recurrent issue. To my mind that would maybe rule-out it being the server at fault. Have you tried deleting your AppData? That's the only other place I know of that stores persistent offline data about DayZ on a user's PC. The other place would be the Steam Cloud if that's enabled. Just off the top of my head here btw.....

It's impossible to say - except something is not right. Verifying your server with Steam will probably fix it. The only other thing that occurs to me is if your PC is struggling to run the server and the game. That could create something similar to lag. It's the kind of thing that happens to me when I have a poor connection to a public server.

@@BFNowhere It's a good PC, I have a faster connection than the public servers. I got attacked and was able to bandage but I can't use any weapons or eat any food. I picked up some strawberry jam and it disappeared though, so I'm not sure if I ate it or not. I am asking the steam forum about it right now.. Lot's of people seem to have had this issue off and on for some time, but I can't find a single fix. You would think if it was lag it would work at some point, but It just isn't. Bummer for me, I'll keep at it..

@@BFNowhere so i made the server like u did in the video and added some mods with expansion and then i changed the map in serverDZ file but when i launch the server theres no traders theres go to camp mission but the trader thing is in the air

Any problems I've ever had with missing traders/AI/infected etc. is because the related xml. files are are not installed correctly. This can be because they weren't done correctly to start with OR because they've been overwritten during a server update. I've never tried Expansion on Livonia so I don't know if there are any errors in the default settings provided by Expansion for that particular map. It's unlikely but possible.

It's been a while since I did it, but assuming you have the Livonia DLC I think all you need to do is open your serverDZ.cfg file (in the main server folder) and at the bottom where the mission template is "dayzOffline.chernarusplus" change it to "dayzOffline.enoch". I have no idea why it's called 'enoch' but that's the way it is!

I assume you mean over the internet (you're not all in an office or living in the same house). Technically, yes you could, and it's not that complicated although some IT skills would be good. Generally people would rent a server to play with friends (Nitrado is the official partner for DayZ) but you'd have to pay for that. Anyway, I thought the clearest explanation would come from AI, so that's what I asked: here's what it said: To allow your friends to connect to your DayZ server over the internet, you'll need to configure your network and make some adjustments to the server settings. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you: 1. Port Forwarding: - Access your router's settings by entering its IP address in a web browser. - Locate the port forwarding or virtual server section. - Add a new rule to forward the necessary ports (e.g., DayZ server default is UDP 2302-2305). - For each rule, specify your local server's IP address and the corresponding ports. - Save the changes and exit the router settings. 2. Configure Firewalls: - Make sure the firewall on your PC allows incoming connections on the specified ports. - Adjust the Windows Firewall settings or any third-party firewall software you use to permit the necessary network traffic. 3. Obtain your Public IP: - Determine your public IP address. You can easily find it by searching "What's my IP" on Google or using websites like ipify.org. 4. Configure DayZ Server Settings: - Open the server's configuration file ("server.cfg" or similar) with a text editor. - Set the IP address to your local server's IP. - Set the server's port to the same port you forwarded in your router's settings. - Save the changes and exit the text editor. 5. After a player first runs the server, a folder called 'storage_1' (or something like that) is created in the mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus folder. This is where progress is stored. After running your server, check to see if that folder is there. If it's not - check to see if the server folder is write-protected (or the mpmissions and dayzOfflinechernarusplus folders). There's no reason any of them should be but it's the only thing I can think of that could prevent the storage folder being created. If it is there: try verifying the server files with Steam - this can fix all sorts of issues.

The server is on your own PC. How private do you want it to be? Day and night cycles are set in the DZconfig file.

There are only two or three different keys for all the mods in the Expansion group (I can't remember exactly how many). If it's saying replace, it's fine to do that, but not necessary. There isn't a separate key for each mod (even though they always provide it each time).

It sounds like you've entered the 'pain' phase that I went through! I've no idea what caused half the problems I had. I don't know what's causing your issue here I'm afraid...

This is a network issue that some people seem to have. You can try using the 'Direct Connect' function from the main game interface. Use I.P. address 127.0.0.1, port 2302. This will at least let you test the server. The issue is likely being caused by your router or by antivirus software and should be quite an easy fix.

If you've been doing anything with Battleye - then I can't really advise you. Otherwise, verifying the game files with Steam will almost certainly fix it.

Go to your Steam Library, right-click on DayZ (the Game), select 'properties', select 'installed files' (on the left) and then click on 'verify integrity of game files'. Then do exactly the same thing with your DayZ Server.

Installing mods on your own server can be complicated and so creating a video about how to do it is even more so! I would like to do a video on this but I'm still trying to work-out how I can explain it as simply as possible. I am not an expert, just a regular player that manages to make things work (usually). I could have nightmares about people complaining that 'it doesn't work....'! Mod creators often don't bother giving installation instructions for their mods which is very discouraging for many (would-be) users. Unless people are already pretty knowledgable about the various processes - then they are likely to just not bother at all. It may be worth the trouble for some, but too much of a hassle for others.

@@BFNowhere i managed to sort it was very straight forward just have to sub to the mods and basically copy and paste them into the single player server and the copy and paste the keys into the correct keys folder also have to add the command in the server.bat file edidted with notepad++ or notepad -mods= [desired mod] save and exit should work perfect.

Yes, that's it in a nutshell. Some mods also require you to copy data into XML files .

Yeah, he'd need time to figure it out easier. LRP has a decent guide on how to do it, but most people in the comments (Me included) can't get them to work and he has not responded to any of those people.

It depends what you want to change. 'serverDZ' the config file controls day/night settings for instance. It's just a regular server - so any methods you might have used before will work.

Can you tell me what is happening. Are there any error messages? The game itself isn't changed doing what's in the video so it should start normally even if the server doesn't for any reason.

Find the map you want in the Steam Workshop. There'll usually be installation instructions of some sort on the page for the map. It's pretty much just like any other mod. The Namalsk map download includes a config file to overwrite the Chernarus one. Some of the others may do - I don't know.

This simple setup runs alongside Steam. However, the modded server I'm running now does not need the internet at all. I assume DayZ itself can run with Steam in offline mode. Got to be worth a try. Obviously you need internet for downloading mods.....

just tried server can't connect to steam. Ignoring that after launching dayz, server shows up but getting. "Warning (0x00040031) you were kicked of the game. log in error: Login timed out. (WaitAuthPlayerLoginState)"

use to play the offline mod but lost interest do to not being able to save. which mod are you using?

I'm using the Expansion bundle of mods. It's a bit more complicated to setup than the basic Chernarus in this video. I'm not particularly knowledgeable but with this you have to create a new . bat file to start the server (which bypasses the desktop shortcut) so no internet needed. There's a lot more to it than that of course but only when I fire-up the game is there any connecting going on. I guess it comes down to whether the game will run offline.

Go into serverDZ and edit the server time settings. Look for server time acceleration and server nighttime acceleration. ServerDZ is in your server folder.

It could be that your system is struggling to run the game and server at the same time. What are your system specs?

The cfg file should be in SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\DayZServer. If it's definitely not there (I can't imagine why it wouldn't be!) then go to your Steam Library, right-click on DayZ Server, select 'Properties' then 'Installed files' then click on 'Verify Integrity of Tool Files'. This will re-download any missing content/files.

Navmesh

That's an unusual error. Navmesh relates to the 'world/map' data. Have you made any changes other than what's described in this video? Try verifying the server and game files with Steam if you haven't already.

Yeah, it could be your system. Running the game and the server does need more resources than just the game. Even so, if you can run DayZ normally you should be able to run the server without starting the game if you had enough space to install it. I don't know what to suggest beyond verifying the files and trying to free-up some more space/system resources.

You have to download the mod from the Steam Workshop and then (also) copy it to your main server folder. You will also need to copy the 'key' supplied with each mod into the 'keys' folder on the server. All mods have those steps in common. Beyond that - there may be different steps you need to take. I strongly recommend looking for mods that give installation instructions - although many of them don't for some reason.

Yes you can. You might need to watch a video or two and some might need different steps to install them depending on what you want. Your game/player mods are installed in the main game interface but you'll most likely need to install them on to your server as well.

When I started playing a few months ago - not doing so great, getting shot by players I couldn't even see etc. - I was thinking about how long it would take me to learn the mechanics of the game and learn the map. So I looked into the single player thing and I loved it. I had time to learn all these things: how to make fires, prepare food, build things etc. The thing is, once you've learnt all this stuff you tend to end-up with the world feeling empty. What can you do with the mountain of ammunition you've got and so on. On both the Chernarus and Livonia maps I got to that point after a few weeks - although I really enjoyed getting there. The only other map I've played - Namalsk with the Namalsk Survival mod is tough even for SP. Now I'm looking into modding the game more extensively to add more of a long-lasting or continuous challenge. I suppose the thing is ultimately - you can do both (multiplayer and SP).

That's a good question! Really I should be calling it 'Day Zed', that's how I pronounce 'Z'. Maybe the developers learnt American English. Does anybody call it anything other than Day "Zee"???

Download the mods you want from Steam DayZ Workshop - these are installed (for your basic DayZ game) using the mod interface. You then need to copy certain files to your server. I'm no expert on doing this but there are vids on YT explaining how to do it.

Yes. You would have to set up a network connection though so that your friend can 'see' your server.

It's the internet - it doesn't matter if they're on the other side of the world or next door! I'm afraid you'll have to look-up how to do it. I suggest you get an AI app on your phone. It should give you very detailed instructions.

😄 I suppose it's theoretically possible, but it would a lot of effort for minimal gain for a hacker. I'll maybe change my server name though.....😬
