This video covers how to set up Linux Mint for gaming, so that you can play both native and Windows developed games using Steam Proton or Lutris.
Step 1. Install Latest GPU Driver.
github.com/lut...
Step 2. Install Wine.
wiki.winehq.or...
Step 3. Install Lutris.
github.com/lut...
Lutris has now removed the option to install from the PPA, so instead download the latest deb file from the Github releases page.
Step 4. Install Steam & Enable Proton.
Install Steam through the Software Manager, and log into your account once installed.
Navigate to Settings / Steam Play / Advanced, tick the Enable Steam Play for all other titles, click OK and restart Steam to apply.
You can also enable Shader Pre-Caching and Allow background processing of Vulkan shaders to improve performance when using Proton which is found at Settings / Shader Pre-Caching.
Step 5. Install & Enable Feral Gamemode.
github.com/Fer...
To enable Gamemode for a game in Steam, right click on a game’s properties, navigate to Set Launch Options and type the following:
gamemoderun %command%
Then click Close, and finally OK.
Alternatively for Lutris, enable the Gamemode toggle, found at System preferences / System options / Enable Feral GameMode.

@@Transvestigater If you want to launch Steam games with Gamemode enabled, but don't want to type gamemoderun %command% in each game's launcher options, then yes launching the Steam games from Lutris will achieve that, although Lutris no longer imports Steam games so this is now a moot point.

I have been using Linux Mint for some time and quite like it. In the v20.1 the printer is already set up after installation. This was good to see as in the past printers was always a problem in Linux. At first seemed OK but then I discovered I could not print a legal size paper. It looked fine in print preview but actually only prints as if the page is letter size. I have set everything every where and nothing fixes it. Linux Manjaro is the same. Printer is HP CP1025nw. Just tried Fedora 34 and would not print at all! Not even the built in test page. In fact it crashed Fedora 34 3 times. Printers have always been a weak part of Linux for decades. It's about time they got it right. If you can't print, the O/S is of little use. This is not the only printer I have had trouble with. By the way, although I would rather use Linux, Windows has no trouble with this or other printers so I'm stuck with Windows until this situation is fixed.
@IntelligentGaming2020
@IntelligentGaming2020 3 года назад
I agree, printer support is not comparable to Windows, but then again, the manufacturers will not often write drivers for Linux, so the result of that is that a device will either not work correctly, or with limited functionality, and in my experience, the latter is usually more common.

@@IntelligentGaming2020 I agree with you. Manufacturers are a lot of the problem. In fact, HP does not directly supply Linux drivers any longer. There is no money in it for them. I will still use Linux when I can and print in Windows when I have to - crazy. Take care.

Followed your guide, I must be stupid; I can't seem to get Skyrim Special Edition working from Steam. At first (left to my own devices to get things working) that was the case but now I realize I might have forgotten to install WINE. So I fixed that according to your guide and it still fails. However, Saint's Row the Third works (and worked before) perfectly, so I'm not sure what is wrong. Red Wings tries to run but invariably, immediately crashes. Same for Hell Pie, Trackmania Nations Forever, and GTA San Andreas (classic version). But a handful of games like Crypt of the Necrodancer, Beat Hazard, Ding Dong XL, and Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition work perfectly. I don't get it. It looks like I've got things about halfway right and halfway wrong. Maybe this is the wrong forum to ask, but I'm getting desperate to get things working as Linux fits all my needs other than gaming, but that's a big chunk of it. I'm also a relative noob when it comes to Linux, so I have no idea how to do certain things, so a step-by-step video was appealing to me. Could it be a WINE misconfiguration? How do I tell? Skyrim gets as far as compiling Vulkan shaders and then dropping back to Steam without so much as a peep. I don't know where to find any error logs or whatever, so I'm at a loss as to what's happening. I haven't even ventured into Lutris really; mostly focusing on Steam first. If there's a better forum than a YT comments section to ask this question, let me know.

Is there any way to have "Game mode" run at the OS level instead of having to individually add a command line for each game?
@IntelligentGaming2020
@IntelligentGaming2020 4 года назад
Easiest method is install Lutris, as anything launched through there will launch with Gamemode enabled, even if you launch the game through Steam. Alternative is to set the Gamemode daemon to run at boot.
@Sorthious
@Sorthious 4 года назад
You can edit the steam launch file to have gamemode started when steam is started, which would cover all steam games. I have Steam set up on my Panel in Linux mint. If you right-click the icon, select Properties, then Edit Currently Selected Item, The Command Entry will read something like this: /usr/games/steam %U All you need to do is add 'gamemoderun' just before /usr(seperate the two with a space.) This will launch gamemode with Steam and will continue to run until you shut Steam down. Hope that was what you were looking to do.

Trine 2 was locked at 30fps in game no matter what I did for a while. Problem = in the options.txt file, search for "TargetSmooth30FPS", true" It was auto set like that. When I tried to change that to 144hz ( my monitor's max refresh rate) , launch the game...it still locked the game at 30. Tried 60, same result, then when I was trying in and out combos of gamemode %command% in the launcher's options. randomly steam starting acting weird and I could no longer right click to add desktop shortcut. then it went into an update mode of the game as if it was redownloading it. Then , the game showed more options on the first small window menu screen when you can select your resolution, whether or not it runs in window mode or automatic, then it gave the 144hz option and more, . I figured it out. This was AFTER I selected " Force the use of a specific Steamplay compatibilty tool" and ensuring " proton 5.0.9" was selected in the drop down selection. Hopes this helps someone. Cheers

@IntelligentGaming2020
@IntelligentGaming2020 4 года назад
I'm not sure how true this is but I've heard a lot of people have problems running games with Proton using the Flatpak version of Steam, something to do with missing libraries, so I always recommend people to install Steam from the distribution's repositories.

It's got nothing to do with Lutris, Linux Mint 20 ships with kernel 5.4 which does have the F-Sync patches applied, you will need to instead use a kernel that has the patches already applied, something like Xanmod or Liquorix would be best for Ubuntu based distributions.
