A lot of drummers have stopped using it because it dampens the cymbal a little. Said drummers usually are able to get another cymbal, so cymbal life isn't that important. Most people use the top felt to increase cymbal life

I've had many dreams where I'm playing drums on stage and the drum kit increasingly becomes more distant and difficult to play, and the second setup here is so reminiscent of that, that i felt a little uncomfortable lmao
