RIO sales manager Zack Dalton explains all the essentials of setting up a fly rod. Zack's tips show how to match the rod, reel, and line to ensure you have a balanced outfit, and then he shows how to correctly attach the backing, fly line and leader to the reel. In addition, Zack has some great tips on how to put a fly rod together to make sure it doesn't fly apart when casting and also demonstrates a really neat trick for threading up a fly rod at the beginning of the day. If you are new to fly fishing, and setting up your own outfit, this video will be an invaluable resource and will ensure that your end result is perfectly rigged.

Thank you for this introduction to rigging a fly rod as I have had mine rigged wrong for over twenty years and just realized it when I went fishing this evening. DUH!

Great knowledge to have and a wonderfully informative video! As a brand new fly fisherman, I assumed I'd have to put my backing and line on my reel myself. I was glad when my friends informed me that fly shops will put on your backing and line for you (probably happier to do that if you buy the line there). It just made getting started easier, since I really just had to know how to tie on a leader, and tie on a fly, and I knew that my reel backing and line was setup by a professional. Just adding this note in case it helps someone in the future, if you have a local fly shop they can probably help! (I have this exact rod, your tip about twisting while seating the rod segments is something I'll use - thanks!)

Great video for people just starting out only thing i can say is i would never false cast a rod with no line on it to see if it will hold lol and definitely not by a river. That's a good way to lose a section of rod down a river or lost in the bush lol. If there's line on the rod then you have nothing to lose if it comes off. Cheers and hope this does not sound rude that is not my intention just don't want anyone losing there rod especially new to the sport.

Good video. Hardest question is always how much backing to put on so that the fly line fills the spool?
@newflyfisher
@newflyfisher 5 лет назад
Usually you fill 1/3 to 1/2 of the spool with backing, but there are several factors to consider. The first is what species you will target, some fish such as saltwater species require a lot more backing. The second factor is how large the fly line is (ie if you use a specialty line like a Bass taper). One method we learned is to wind on the fly line without backing, then mark on the spool how much space there is. The take the fly line off and put on backing based on where the fly line marking is. Just deduct a little space so you have room for the fly line when reeled in. Hope this helps.

I think this is the wrong way to assemble a rod. I go with the Kelly Galloup method. Start at the tip section and work your way down. OR, another good method is to put the two top sections together and then the two bottom sections and then meet at the middle!

Should a reel be mounted on top or bottom...I’ve seen both ways. Mine came mounted on the bottom...should I change it?

This vodeo is near useless fpr a beginner as you already had the backing on. It would be more helpful of you included how much backing and how to tie each knot.

god i got to 2 minutes into the video and realized he already has something on the reel... my reel is empty nothing on it. why wouldn't you show it from the start. this is the second video I've found like this. where is a bare bones beginner set up video???? whats the point of doing this video if you aren't going to start from the beginning
